If they would just say that up front, I wouldn't be so upset. Real talk though, why doesn't all that cash go to charity or something?

For me, CPO365 seems to be a place where the golden kneepad firsts can try to get some face time by asking questions and responding to everything, lengthening the whole thing that no first or chief wants to be at. They usually embarrass themselves and look like idiots though, so it backfires..

I'm pretty sure there'd be no way I'd be able to get out of it on a ship though. #shoredutylife

I really can't ever imagine taking job promotion that seriously. Definitely can't imagine taking it seriously enough to carry a wooden box and play chief games to get into the tree fort. Gotta give it to them though. Their PR team has worked pretty good at making it seem like a big enough life achievement to cry about.

So I've been kicking around the idea of a financial brief for my sailors (I'm actually sitting in a coffee shop right now and developing it). Most of the Navy financial briefs, including the GMT, focus on the very basic things that aren't really applicable to sailors who aren't 18 so I wanted to take it a step further. I posted this in the Business subforum where I discussed my idea for the brief, but i figured I could post this here as well if it benefits anyone. Also, someone can sanity check my thinking because I literally just made this call to USAA to discuss my options. The defined objective of the brief is to provide the fundamental information necessary to ask informed questions and make informed decisions. Something I'm looking to relate to them is to understand situations where they're losing or gaining and to what extent. For example: I "own" and make payments on a 2013 Audi A4. The value of the car is approximately $26,000 of which $10,000 is still outstanding. I'm on an Audi fixed repayment at 60 mo of $405/mo at 1.25% fixed APR with 49 mos to go. I am expecting to leave the Navy in January and attend school in the following Autumn, which means my income will be limited and the fixed payments may go from easily manageable to overly burdensome. So I look to refinance. I am eligible to take out a loan of $10,000 to cover the remaining cost of the vehicle at a fixed 4.25% but at a monthly payment of around $250 over 60 mo. However, I am allowed to refinance up to the value of the vehicle. If the loan is taken at the amount of $15,000 the rate will drop to fixed 2.99% and I can increase the term to 72 mo, dropping my monthly payment to around $225/mo. I'm taking on more debt for a longer term (meaning more in interest), but the advantages are significant if handled appropriately. - The monthly payment is actually lower. - The average rate of inflation will likely cancel >66% of the interest instead <50% - The remaining $5,000 can be invested at an average return that will likely cover the remainder of the interest rate - inflation rate and create a net positive return rate for the loan overall. Meaning that by taking the loan I am actually making money. It's obvious I should take the $15,000 and make early repayment, but the question now becomes should I take up to the full value of the vehicle? Well that depends... - The original point of refinancing was to lower my monthly payments during a period where income will be greatly reduced - what is the debt load? - How much risk am I willing to assume that the inflation rate will be ~average and that market return on investment will also ~average? - How much risk am I willing to assume that I'll be able to pay on the load post-grad school? Basically will I have a job? - How long do I expect repayment to take? - The current loan through Audi is already below the average inflation rate and theoretically "makes" money. I intend to break this down, even it takes an hour, to the level they need to understand and then provide the slides to them with the notes for later reference. My hope is that they actually learn some perspective and can think critically when it comes to their daily lives and finances. Boon fucked around with this message at 20:03 on Aug 28, 2015 |
