It's explicitly in the rules

I can't imagine letting anyone do this twice in a tournament, much less 5 times in one regionals semifinal.

Right, but it was allowed. If you look at old world's coverage, Paul used his arms and fingers several times to guess/mark locations of where his ships would land and what their FOV was. I never did it myself and only noticed when they explicitly added it to the FAQ or tournament rules.

Huh?

I was reading this over the weekend and I'm really excited to give it a shot with some friends. The idea of starting off with a barebones ship, gaining experience in missions, and spending it on upgrades across a campaign really appeals to me.

Plus I've got some friends who have been interested in the game, and I feel that simplifying their experience down to controlling a single ship that they get to slowly "level-up" with upgrades will lower the barrier of entry and make the game more social ("hurray we win" instead of "hurray you lose").

I mean I beat a guy with an illegal list because Decimators can't carry missiles but eh his super expensive Oicunn with ruthlessness did not impress me anyway. If you joust using a decimator against any list with a solid amout of red dice(12 or more) your decimator will soon be done.

I'm laughin at people on the FFG forum complaining about the TLT meta, though- if you run your turret straight into the lead Y wing you will not get shot by all the TLTs.

Honestly you can down a Decimator pretty consistently with 9 red dice and PS advantage. My XXXs have next to zero trouble with Decimators. Escorts complicate things, but just the Decimator? Focused down like a little bitch.

You don't really need a PS advantage to kill a deci. Though normally a deci should have no trouble arc dodging X wings- they have pretty predictable dials and no post-move movement, at least till the T-70 comes out.

Decis have to be arc dodging hard to survive. You can't joust with them, so putting ordnance on there is an absolute waste.

You don't need it, but it does more reliably prevent a parting shot from the Decimator that might take out a ship. But that's true of pretty much any ship interaction. Decimators have a tougher time dodging X-wings unless they have engine upgrades. Without it, they're slightly faster based on the virtue of their base size alone, and having predictable dials won't save you from a situation in which no maneuver will reliably take you out of arc of those predictable moves.

I have had trouble with a Decimator with my X-wings maybe twice? And one of those was Kenkirk with Isard and Palpatine, so it was tanky as gently caress.

I fought a decimator with Vader a grand total of once, and it wasn't that scary. Two escorting Tie Ints, nailed one Int first in the jousting, damaged the Decimator and took out Vader, then left the decimator in the asteroids, nailed the last int, and then took out the decimator at range 3 where I get an extra defence die and it was still a piece of piss to hit.

So here's something I stumbled on earlier today. A "total conversion" to turn X-Wing into a cooperative boardgame-style campaign against an AI controlled Empire.

Having sat down and given it a look my thoughts at a glance are:

1). This is obviously a labor of love. For being fanmade homebrew the production values are quite high. It comes with templates for player sheets, various decks of cards, and new terrain and obstacles like minefields and ion storms.

2). The campaign structure is interesting in the sense that everyone only controls a single ship which they can then expand through upgrades and abilities with XP, accrued through shooting down enemy ships, assisting other players, achieving bonus objectives, etc. This includes being able to take multiple upgrades and EPTs and also purchase unique pilot abilities from official cards to make your own. It's also set up so that players are only ever going to be flying small ships...there's no Fat Han or Super Dash stuff here, everyone starts out in an X-Wing or Y-Wing and you can pay some XP to switch out to an A-Wing, B-Wing, or HWK later on if you want.

3). The AI setup for Imperial pilots seems like the thing most likely to result in things breaking down because it looks rather cumbersome. Basically every enemy ship follows a kind of IF/THEN decision tree based on things like where the nearest enemy ship is, whether it's in arc, whether it's flying towards or away from the AI ship, etc, and then some dice are rolled to determine what the ship's movement is based on those criteria. The designer tries to simplify things a bit by having enemies stick to flying in formation until they're broken up by dogfights but even then in seems like a lot of measuring, dice-rolling, and chart-consulting for a game that recommends you have 2-3 TIE Fighters for every participant and the number of players ostensibly goes up to 6.

Still, if nothing else it's worth a look.

This is something I've thought about as well. Turning X-Wing into a co-op style game is a good thing, as a lot of people don't really like the 100% PVP aspect of the game. Plus, I think you are correct in assuming a lot of people get X-Wing overload, where making a 100 point squad is kind of overload and they'd rather just focus on one little ship to command.

It sort of reminds me why I don't like Hearthstone's main modes-- I don't want to play against real people in PVP. I'd rather do their single player modes against AIs.

Also I am curious if the author of the single player mode is eyeing a possible position at FFG by making that labor of love. Of course they'd have to move to Minnesota which I think is a terrible drawback to that idea no matter how much one's love of tiny plastic spaceships may be.

I work at Target, and I haven't seen anything yet in the backroom that might indicate more stuff is coming out immediately. I'm hoping for individual X-wings/TIEs, but can't confirm.

That said, I also get 10% off for working there and 5% off with my target card, so I'm looking at drat near $50 off my next X-wing purchase. :getin:

The scum crew options are legitimately really good, especially combined with the YV's fairly green dial. I mean, the K4 security droid is extremely legit(I ran a super Kath build with that, EU, VI, and an HLC and she is a dangerous piece.). The Outlaw Tech is pretty good, Greedo's nice, Bossk is great(Bossk+Gunner is a good way to run a YV that has no need for actions). I mean, there's nothing quite as defensively potent as Ysanne or C3P0 but drat even the generic with some good crew is mean.

I'm thinking about trying a Slaver with Bossk, Gunner, and engine upgrade, just boosting around like a jackass.

My current notion is to pair Bossk with Prince Xizor(!). You can fully kit out Xizor and still have the points to give Bossk all the trimmings (Mangler Cannon, Gunner, K4, Outlaw Tech, Calculation, Hound's Tooth) and still come in at 98 for an initiative bid. Plus Xizor's ability works nicely with a big chunky ship to slide excess damage off onto.

I rarely consider Xizor's ability a huge selling point, it's more that with VI he's a PS 9 arc dodger with 3 red and 3 green dice, a Systems upgrade, Autothrusters, and an Illicit upgrade. Getting to redirect the occasional damage is a bonus if it happens.

Well there's a funny thing...when I told my FLGS owner about the new core set dropping in all likelihood on 9/4 he was surprised and a little pissed because he apparently had no idea it was coming out. He went and checked the preorder thing he uses to get FFG stuff in and there was the Wave 8 stuff up for preorder but no new core set. So I don't know if this is some weird anomaly, a result of wires getting crossed, or part of a deliberate big retail store push or what.

My FLGS isn't some regionals hosting megastore or anything but he orders a fair amount of FFG product (including X-Wing, Armada, and ImpAss) and he had no idea this was coming out on September 4th like at all. I don't know anything about anything with regards to this, but it's entirely possible that the matter isn't even in FFG's hands. This could be a Disney thing, and while Disney seems cool with FFG when it comes to gearing up the Episode 7 marketing machine FFG customers and tabletop game stores may rank near the bottom of the list compared to pretty much everyone and everywhere else.
