It makes sense from a marketing perspective to be honest. John Key's all about establishing New Zealand as a brand

Are you seriously asking if she's got to where she is because she's hot? Its a clichéd question by now, but would you ask this about a male politician? Or do you actually think women get into positions of power just by being attractive?

Please Fong before you sperg too wildly at the latest wrongthink, please note that I'm genuinely asking what people think and I actually didn't give an opinion.

There's been two interesting posts on DimPost about this you might find interesting - perhaps you aren't aware this has been the subject of recent discussion in NZ pol circles. If you do read them do check the comments, hilarity ensues.

Fwiw I've known her since university. She's lovely, smart and a genuinely great human being. But she's always underperformed in the house. Reckon it's the paucity of talent in Labour that makes her look like a superstar

I did go and read those articles and (assuming I read the ones you're talking about) they're kind of rubbish. His whole premise is that she's only just become popular and its not true, people have been talking about her for ages as the future PM. She had to answer questions last year around why she didn't want to throw her hat in the ring for Labour leadership, and even earlier people were talking about her as the obvious choice of deputy if Grant Robertson had beaten Cunliffe in the labour leadership race.

Personally I like her mostly for the stuff I've seen of her in the house- she's a good orator and her views align with mine on a lot of issues. My partner works in the public service and has had a fair bit of contact with Jacinda Ardern too, and can't speak highly enough of her.

So that's kinda my point. Its clear to me that she's really capable which is why I think it's lovely and sexist for people to be accusing her of style over substance. She does seem good at doing the whole soft politics thing tho, which is only another point in her favour imo, given the trend in NZ politics since Key took over.

Of course they picked two variants from the Prime Minister's favourite designer.

E: Also I love how one of the images of "the flag in use" is as a badge on a backpack, because, y'know, that's what people do with flags.

It's always been that one, right from the start. The whole process is a charade.

Like someone on my Facebook posted, they picked the two options they wanted, and two lovely ones that nobody in their right mind will vote for.

To be honest though I don't mind the bottom right one, I could get used to it. Don't like the black version so much.

I reckon the koru one will win the first referendum, actually. There's too many silver fern designs there, so the fern vote'll be split, and there's a lot of people out there that really don't want a fern on the flag.

Of course, even if that does happen, I'm positive the government will find a way to creatively retcon the result so it'll be the bottom right one up against the current flag next year.

Not the green koru? Those designs were really popular, and pretty nice looking too. So many other countries have red, white and blue.

The only options that were ever going to be on the table is red/white/blue because are heritage, and black/white because are sports.

I had a green koru in the top 40. It got disqualified due to a copyright claim last week though. The current koru is poorly drawn and really unbalanced.

It's absolutely going to be the red / blue option. It's had so much media attention compared to all other entries and that'll continue in the coming months. Key wants it. Richie wants it. Plus it's 'comfortable' in the sense that it's basically just the current flag.

What a joke. The red & blue one was gonna be the winner from the start.

Here's what the panel should have done: free up 14 spaces for good designs by just choosing their favourite colour scheme of the (near-)duplicates
