When I was getting my feet wet in Traktor I used a Korg nanoKONTROL2 which is just a $60 midi mixer http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/nanoKON2bk There's a couple traktor maps for it, it was sufficient for me to record a few full mixes with sync enabled, so it's probably sufficient for your purposes.

Alfajor posted:I'm baffled. How does Serato promote this as "a supreme performance" ?? ...because with Serato the DDJ SZ simply isn't as rapidfire with samples as an MPC is so this is pretty much all you can do with it despite what they're pushing it as. The video is still hilarious and I feel bad for Sinden on this one as he's a pretty decent producer but not really a 'live' performer like a lot of DJs are.

Watching these videos in contrast I literally burst out laughing after putting on the Sinden one then fast forwarding halfway through the Mix Master Mike. To be honest I'm not on board with this sampling/stems/beat juggling business and I think these companies should stop trying to reinvent the wheel. Lots of people have issues playing two tracks together now I'm gonna hear random out of place sounds and efx. If you wanna do a "live" setup there are lots of ways to do that already, but now people are going to think they aren't poo poo unless they are slamming stems together. But that's a whole other conversation I guess and I'm sure lots of people out there will disagree, although even in the professional world, that Sinden vs Mix Master Mike video is a pretty good example why this format sucks.

Stems are interesting to me but they seem like a first step. It seems like you'd actually want multiple stems per part, like you could have both the clean and dirty version of the vocals or multiple basslines. It just feels like they developed the limitations of the format entirely around the limitations of their controllers [which is reasonable I guess since they implemented it]. That said it makes a lot more sense than remix decks which I never really understood.

Stems imo just continues to push the image of a DJ as a performer/something to watch and allows us regular people to get in on the live DJ mashup hype train. I guess I'm a purest in that I think the DJ should be tucked away in some corner away from everyone and mixing records instead of trying to live drum over some pop stems while everyone stands around and watches. Whatever gets you booked I guess. Also I went to a BBQ of DJs/promoters in my area and it was a total blast. Had a PA system setup and everyone was nerding out over track IDs, dubplates, mixing styles, etc. b0red fucked around with this message at 17:12 on Sep 2, 2015 |

Serato Video on sale for $75, I took the plunge. If all I want to do are chill visuals, and not VJing, any poo poo projector will do, right?

Getting back into mixing after being on hiatus for a few years, and had an S8 come in the mail yesterday. Played with it for a couple of hours last night and goddamn I'd forgotten how much I love mixing. It's a really nice piece of hardware and I can't wait to dig into the capabilities. I used to use Torq back when that was still a thing and Christ, using Traktor + S8 now is like going from an old Nokia brick phone to an iPhone. The game done changed. Really glad I decided to get some time code vinyls though (they come in the mail today), mixing without turntables just felt alien and wrong.

So traktor has this issue ive found where i go to scratch a beat and it restarts the entire track back to the beginning. It did this with my old audio6 and pc from time to time but its still happening with my new setup. Basically ill have a track playing and go to scratch a beat, and the entire track jumps right to beginning, completely ruining my set. This happens in relative mode which is the only mode i use. Again, this is an entirely brand new traktor setup, mixer, and PC and im getting the same problem. Anyone found a fix for this issue?

Do you have the "switch to absolute mode at lead-in" option selected? Only thing I can think of

So after 18 months or so of playing with Serato and still preferring the way Rekordbox works, Pioneer are releasing Rekordbox DJ which is compatible with a bunch of existing controllers including my SX. Noice. Hope it's actually decent! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrub2gajCu8

I'm pretty sure RekordBox 4 is a heavily customized version of Serato DJ.

Never had any issues with Rekordbox myself at all. It's Serato that's been shite for me... I'll give this a shot though.TheWevel posted:I'm pretty sure RekordBox 4 is a heavily customized version of Serato DJ. As long as the analysis stuff is still Rekordbox I'm happy as that's one of the main issues I have with Serato, it's a bit dumb knowing where to put cue points, I went digital purely so I could avoid having to manually do poo poo like that. Nothing serious, the analysis side of things I find it tends to be a bit poo poo with. I run Rekordbox on the same laptop and fire music files through both it and Serato, Rekordbox generally gets cue points and beat grids spot on, it's a rarity that I need to manually adjust anything. Serato needs a lot more manual adjustment in terms of beat gridding which is a bit poo poo really. If Serato had Rekordbox's analysis then I'd like it a lot more which is what I'm hoping Rekordbox DJ turns out to be.

88h88 posted:Oh nice, it's out. Care to say a bit more on the matter? It's ok, kinda clunky and a bit unstable. I like that it allows me to remap my filter knob on my DDJ-SR, and being able to setup FX presets that I can trigger with the performance pads is pretty nice. Memory loops work exactly like they do on CDJs, which kinda threw me off because I'm used to being able to select + activate saved loops ahead of time without jumping straight to them. And as near as I can tell you can't do any track preparation while in performance mode, if you wanna setup a memory cue or saved loop you have to jump back into preparation mode...for reasons. It really just feels tacked on at the moment, hopefully it'll improve over time.

Cool. I moved house and actually have an internet connection now so I downloaded Rekordbox 4 and will get to activating it and having a play. Funny you should mention the loops thing, I could never get that to work reliably on Serato for some reason, I had a load set up for ease of mixing and had it skip past them on many an occasion to the point where I just straight wouldn't trust it to actually work. Kinda took the fun out of it. I look forward to breaking RBDJ.

I recently broke my headphones and have been shopping for new ones. I really want the pink/white Beats Mixr but am not gonna blow $250 on something I'm likely to lose/break a few years from now. Bought these excellent DJ headphones from Monoprice, upgraded with red earpieces. $30, not bad. http://www.monoprice.com/mobile/Product/Details/8323?mainCategoryId=108&categoryId=10823&subCategoryId=1082302&cpnCd= Anyway as for sound quality I wouldn't do any mastering on them but they're great for dj use.
