Also just ducking back a topic because this is an interesting evolution of that VN chatter. If Steam starts getting in on this and not making you jump through off-service patches for the raw versions of these games... buckle in.

This is what we asked for, right? People have been giving the Australian government poo poo for years because the Classification Board can ban media by refusing to rate it - and people don't make as much of a stink about it, but in the US, a game with an ESRB "AO" is effectively banned too, because no major retailer will carry it, and if it's that objectionable it won't pass console certification either.

If Steam want to try to change that, I'm all for it. If more kinds of games are allowed to be commercially viable, it can only be a good thing for the long-term growth of the medium - even if we have to weather the storm of anime nipples in the short term.

I don't really think this is going to open the flood gates for full on gross liquid dripping hentai. This game looks really tame, like sex scenes on HBO shows are more graphic based on the handful of screenshots. If Valve wants to curate the line between erotic-but-tasteful and nohumanshouldbelookingatthis I want to see where it goes.

But if it goes in the other direction I don't care, I'm a grown adult. Valve will be raking in more dough and some lonely nerd gets to jerk it for $30.

Mostly the issue has been the inconsistency. Games like the Mass Effects/Dragon Ages/Witchers of the world were already entirely happy to have sex scenes (sometimes a lot more graphic than what you'd see in a VN, depending on title) and skate through fine, but Steam's basically gone "can't do porno, gotta censor it". More than a few games have gotten on in "edited" editions and then a "fan-made" patch happens to leak out day one for these, which was basically the wink-wink-nudge-nudge answer. It's an interesting shift if they're finally going "You can have a story-based title wherein sex is a major part of that plot and we'll let you get away with this", even if they still shy off of the "pornographic" titles.

Yeah, basically this. I looked into the game a little more and it seems like it may be just an exception to the prior blanket ban rather than a full shift in policy.

Sure. If it sounds like I think they should or will just open the floodgates and accept all comers, that's not what I mean. One thing at a time.

The comments from the publisher are pretty interesting, too. Unlike a lot of these games, they clearly care about not openly declaring war on the coveted social justice warrior demographic. Who knows if that attitude carries over to the actual game, but it's pretty adroit PR, at least.

The idea that Valve curates Steam in any meaningful way in 2015 is goddamned hilarious. They've let such a flood of total loving garbage in lately that I've entirely given up on using Steam to discover games. The main page of the Steam store may as well just be a search box as far as I'm concerned.

Steam doesn't curate but I don't necessarily think that it's a good thing. On the one hand you have the "people will buy what they want to buy, why not make money off it?" and on the other you have Reddit. I've said it before, I'll say it again: at some point you cease to have bad neighbors and start living in a bad neighborhood. Opening the doors to things like that Slave Trade game (which, jesus) doesn't make me think any better of Steam.

Yes, it's a marketplace but they could also culture a standard or aesthetic. I don't see that poo poo on GOG or Itch.io and it makes them a more welcoming virtual space where I'm happier to spend my money.

What steam tries to do is outsource their curation but that just means that every time I log in, I get to see what Tablebrasket The Snarky Lad has to say about aspect ratios.

TL:DR Hentai is loving gross. Stop it.

That seems needlessly hostile. We're all on the same side here - when I made that joke about the "coveted social justice warrior demographic", I was absolutely including myself in that category.

I think you hit on something more constructive with the rest of what you said, though, which is that what this actually boils down to is a disagreement about whether Valve should curate what they carry on Steam or not. I don't actually have a strong opinion about that - I think there are compelling arguments for both sides. That said, I think it's pretty clear at this point that Valve definitely think they shouldn't be involved in that. My hope, then, is that if they're not going to act as any kind of curator anyway, maybe they can do some good in other ways.

I'm hoping that by letting this Kindred Spirits game onto Steam, that means they're opening the door to extra exposure for small-scale projects and art games about sex, if the developers want it. I'm thinking of things in the vein of Cobra Club, much more than the kinds of things that were in the bundles that were mentioned last page.

Valve does want to be seen as a curator but they don't want to have to explain or be held accountable for any of their decisions so they've defaulted to a position of :effort: that benefits noone.

There's this power of iconography in simplified art that's undeniably appealing. It's "safe" and realistic enough to be believable but simplified enough for you to project yourself into it. I'm not even talking about hentai specifically but cartoons in general.

e: The porn industry in general is gross and exploitative but cartoon porn is at the very bottom of the gross totem pole.

Look buddy, this is serious business and I'll thank you not to joke about it. Now, here's my dissertation on the origins and cultural significance of hentai. Some scholars say it started in the late 1940s, during the Allied occupation of Japan, but I think it's clear that its true origins lie in the pornographic woodcuts that were popular in the Edo period. Poochy ain't Stupid.
I might be.
Just finished with the Paper Mario WOFF episode. I might have mentioned it my response already, but since you didn't talk much about the title screen movie, I love how Bowser's grand plan was to tape Kammy Koopa in some... storybook to magically break in to Star Haven, steal the Star Rod, wish his castle under Princess Peach's castle, then raise it up into the sky.

The badge shop is fairly randomized. I lucked out this playthrough and Speedy Spin was there the first time I stopped by, which makes moving so much faster and dodging enemies a breeze. Also, while a little tricky to pull off, you can get first strikes with Bombette that can save FP and a lot of time on those spiked Clefts.

Also, I was honest with Bowser this time, and one of the possible choices other them Mushrooms and Sodas is an final dungeon enemy capable of summoning other units and super charging for 10 damage. Honesty sucks.

Also sorta relevant to (every JRPG) the next chapter and backtracking
..even though I still enjoy it.

I didn't finish Paper Mario for the first time until a few years ago and was overall disappointed compared to its sequels (yeah, I even think Sticker Star is a better game). Too simplistic with a really soporific pace but it's still an above average to decent game. But two things stand the gently caress out:

Peach doesn't lose agency while kidnapped. Super Mario RPG was surprising for making her a playable character but Paper Mario keeps the traditional storyline while keeping Peach a central character. If anything she and Twink are just as central as Mario. Whenever nerds cry that The Legend of Zelda should be about Link and no one else I just point to Peach's role in Paper Mario about how you can run a kidnap story without removing the character completely from existence.

Second, Chet Rippo is the greatest NPC. This was the game's saving grace for me. Relatively early I had like 5hp and fp but maxed out in BP making me pretty much invincible. It was a really clever risk/reward system, a neat character I wasn't expecting to see in a Mario game, and the badge system lifted up a game I thought was too basic. Let me put a dollar in the Souls jar but it felt like playing a Souls game naked.
