I'm not really sure how I feel about this game. I think I might wait a few months before I buy it. I don't really have a problem with the game itself (other then those spawns, but that's typical of COD at this point), but the netcode and hit detection is still as inconsistent as ever. Even on PC (with its supposed "100% ranked dedicated servers"), every game felt different. One game I was killing people around corners like that movie Wanted, and the next I was a second behind everyone.

There was a fairly revealing interview with Vond on the map design somewhere recently. None of it was a revelation, but he was basically stating outright the exact reasons I dislike the levels. They're explicitly overdesigned, something I don't like.

That is, at any given intersection, X number of waist high cover with Y lines of sight. Z windows with Y lines of sight.

So the 'game' is make sure you're aiming at the right opposing piece of waist high cover/window, woo!

That, probably more than any other reason, is why I hate the 3 lane maps so much. They funnel everyone into predetermined, predesigned engagements. Even the flanking is very much 'ok, this convenient billboard is your sweet parkour space wall run flank route!'. Another really specific example - you can't jump over the rocks on Stronghold, despite them being easily in jetpack reach. Why? Because gently caress you, that's not part of the proscribed lines of engagement.

You can make the argument that results in 'better' maps because they intentionally set up the lines of sight and whatnot, but I'll always favor a level that has more slop in where you can engage and prioritizes covering an area of the screen over a specific loving traffic cone that you know people will stand behind.

I mean they're still better than most of MW3s maps (iirc Sledge 'helped' with those, which explains a lot about both MW3 mp maps and AW maps), but that's not a high bar.

And I don't agree with the narrative that Ghosts maps sucked either. Had worse lows for sure, but I'll take the occasional Stonehaven or Siege if it means that '3 lane' = Warhawk and Freight, and the rest are similar to Strikezone, Octane, Tremor, Whiteout, Overlord, etc. Most of the bad maps were simply too large (Stronghold, Siege, Stormfront, Chasm, pieces of Whiteout and Overlord). And I really liked some of the DLC maps.

BO3 (so far anyway) has maps on the too small end of the scale, ignoring the lane design. Infinite sprint for everyone plus boosting and wall running shrinks the levels.

Mister Macys posted:

The wall running is a solution in search of a problem, and Treyarch's hamfisted Mario pits of death are just bad map design.

There was a hilarious aside in that interview that was basically 'we couldn't figure out how to make the new movement fun, but then we went back to our tried and true 3 lane maps and all was well!', which I read as 'we gave up and bolted it on to normal maps, have fun!'.

I always thought the criticism of Stonehaven was kind of funny, because if it had some nice tall patches of grass, that's exactly what it would have been.

And yes, in general, gently caress flat maps with no soft cover. Gimme hills and valleys and grass.

I don't even like ghillie suits and I still enjoyed levels that had that type of terrain.

Yeah black ops 1 is probably still my favorite. It was slow enough that I could actually do well and get kill streaks. These days I'm lucky if I get 3 or 4 kills in a row.

Yeah agreed, Black ops 1 has since been my favorite after moving from pc to play with Macy's and co on console. I found the maps to be not too big or too small, it was a good in between where each weapon could shine. I disliked how the most popular maps on Blops 2 were almost all fairly small 3 lane maps (though I still enjoyed Blops 2, one of my favorite guns selections)

Though apart from Combine I have found all the maps in Black Ops 3 decent with Evac being my favorite, though if I had to make assumption based on those maps I think SMGs will be the most popular gun class.

Yeah I'm one of those weirdos who didn't mind Stonehaven at all, though the design led to everyone running around that area at the back of the map. Playing HC with a silenced MK14 was the best.

In response to Ven's sprint cancel survey post, I searched my email, launched the survey, and wrote paragraphs of eloquently delivered diatribe about my Bl3ps grievances. Headlined by the need for sprint cancelling, I also chastised VSAT being too easily countered, domination rounds existing, the riot shield exclusion, the absence of support streaks, and all of the specialist weapons and abilities only benefiting the individual and not the team.

I felt so proud to submit that survey.

Then I scrolled down and saw Hackan's post about implementation impossibilities due to sprint reload always being a thing.

Now I'm ashamed.
