They don't understand just how loving bad 6:5 blackjack is. You see it in this thread too, people are just "where is the $5 blackjack???" If you play more than about 60-90 minutes (depending on hands per hour and how hosed up your play is) your expected loss at the $5 6:5 table is worse than the $25 one with decent rules. And you aren't ever gonna get comped poo poo at the kiddie table.

So the obvious follow up question: Where are the tables with fairly "cheap" blackjack that doesn't play with teriible nazi rules?

As of a few weeks ago I think I remember seeing $10 3:2 tables at the stratosphere. Downtown will generally have at least some 'true' blackjack tables for a fair price.

A lot of places will literally mix both types of tables in the same casino, so really just make sure that you see 'Blackjack pays 3 to 2" on the felt or a sign before you sit down. Or just ask the dealer, its a totally normal question. Specifically, I know that Treasure Island had pretty much all 3:2 tables the last time I was there (getting to be a year ago though, now). Avoid 'party pits' with dancing girls and other gimmicks, unless watching a faux strip show is worth getting $12 instead of $15 everytime you Blackjack on a $10 bet to you.

From last time I was there, I couldn't find any $10 3:2 on the strip over an entire weekend. There was some $10 craps with high-limit odds so I mostly played that.

You can sort by house edge to see that even within 3:2 there is a fairly big difference in EV. Looks like El Cortez downtown has a really good/cheap single deck game (.2 house edge). Probably only one table though. The standard decent strip game is 6 decks at .29 house edge and you can find min 25 often at a lot of tables. Its a good game. http://wizardofvegas.com/guides/blackjack-survey/ Btw, the basic strategy for a single deck game with the el cortez rules (Hit soft 17, no DAS, no RSA, no surrender), is significantly different than the standard 6 deck strip game (stand soft 17, DAS, RSA, surrender). Take the rules and plug them into this calculator to get the strategy charts. http://wizardofodds.com/games/blackjack/strategy/calculator/ If you count at all, the single deck game at the Cortez is almost impossible not to have an edge at. They are probably watching it like a hawk though for any deviation from standard play or bet variation, and they'll start shuffling up after every single hand. You'll still get an advantage sitting at the anchor position at a full table and just seeing everyone else's cards though, but getting sweated like crazy for barely minimum wage sucks. When I went I would actually play a relatively lovely double deck game at red rock (hit soft 17, no surrender, .4 house edge) because they were good with comps there and I like the casino.

I understand playing the house odds to make your money last a little longer but if you are just going to Vegas to have fun and not be a degen don't worry about it. Set aside money for gambling, put it in your mind it is entertainment money and it will be gone by the end of your trip. If you win some, great. If not, no biggie, you had fun. Go to a casino because it looks cool and you want to check it out. Not because it has a .01 point of edge in your favor. Do go to El Cortez though because that is the most old school Vegas you'll get these days.

Yah for sure, my original point was don't loving play 6:5 blackjack or craps with horrible odds just because its "cheap". Because its not. I said I preferred Red Rock even though they have relatively crappy blackjack outside of the high limit room.

Sorry if I made it sound like I was knocking your advice. You gave solid advise especially for the tourist gambler to even be mindful of when playing game with not the best odds. I just suck explaining myself on a keyboard. I meant it just a general statement for all the first timers that seem to worry about odds instead of having fun. I shouldn't talk though. My favorite table game is 3 card poker. A game where actually burning your money is a slower way to lose it.

Cool cool. Counting cards a little bit isn't that hard btw, and changes the game from "how long will my money last" to "how long do I have to play to get this trip taken care of". It's still a rush though, cus you can be up or down many thousands (or more) over any single trip. Blackjack variance is no joke.

Yeah there is something to be said for just enjoying yourself and playing what you like where you like if you're a tourist and not really a serious gambler. Though as a gambler I feel obligated to at least throw in my two cents that you should vote with your wallet against that sort of poo poo. It's sort of like how someone eating at Outback should understand they are getting a poo poo steak and not a deal, but if they like it, or don't see the difference between Outback and Del Frisco's, more power to them I guess. e: What a lovely analogy, lol

Baddog posted:People are more interested in playing the lowest limit possible instead of playing the good games. They don't understand just how loving bad 6:5 blackjack is. Thanks. After playing at the locals casino(s) in Tahoe in July, I guess I just assumed that downtown would be 3:2 with not terrible rules. I'll make sure to check it out before I sit down. Even worse, I assumed that downtown would be no worse than 345 on the craps tables. It blows my mind that anywhere would be 2x, let alone downtown. Having said all that, I'll reissue my previous question and add another: 1) Can anyone recommend a strip club for a boring married couple? For what it's worth we are late 30s and she has expressed a preference for topless with alcohol over fully nude and no alcohol. 2) Can anyone recommend an old school style restaurant near/on the strip or downtown that isn't terrible? I've been looking at Hugo's Cellar reviews and it looks like a good deal.

You have sooo many restaurant choices in Vegas, but here are a couple to think about. I'm not sure what exactly "old school style" means but I think Top of Binions might qualify. One of the things I think of when I think of Vegas is "steak". Its downtown, there's a cool elevator ride up and you have an awesome view from the top while you eat. http://www.yelp.com/biz/top-of-binions-steakhouse-las-vegas Another option amongst many that I enjoyed this last trip was Jaleo at Cosmo on the strip. We did the "The Jaleo Experience" @ $55 per person and it was really tasty. So much food..

Could someone recommend a few places to see a concert? I'm headed to Vegas the second week of Sept and would love to see a few local/ regional bands. This is not directly responsive to your question, but given your apparent interests in vegetarian food and the local/non-touristy side of Las Vegas, I'd suggest stopping into the Bronze Cafe for lunch during your trip. Excellent and varied menu (it was #18 on Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the U.S. for 2015), and it's an interesting setting entirely separated from the mass of tourists on the Strip and Fremont St. If you're heading downtown at all, this would be on the way.

gently caress you, jaySB for telling us to go to Twist. Here's a thing that happened. Waiter: well, I know you only ordered the five course tasting menu, but the chef would like you and your wife to enjoy the lobster course, as well. Me: I don't know. We are pretty full and still have two more courses to go. Waiter. gently caress you. Here is a butter poached lobster tail for each of you and a glass of 100% rousanne from the Rhone for you since your wife is already drunk Me: ok. This is great. I love rousanne but my wife doesn't and I rarely get to drink any. Waiter: Really? Here, have twice as much. If you can afford it, go to twist. Fantastic service and excellent food and wine pairings.

I wish I had perused this thread a bit more before having my bachelor party. Ghostbar's clientele was the skeeviest I'd ever seen at a Vegas club since I went to that awful club at Stratosphere years ago. Really wish I had picked someplace else. My friend found one girl he really liked and they talked for a long time, and he took her to his room... Then she said she'd only have sex for money. Ouch.

First time in Vegas and the states and i loved it. Stayed at the MGM and had a blast - so jealous for you domestic folks who have such a place in their country. I enjoyed the contrast in some hotels/location; what are some of the seedier hotels? I love googling and youtubing them - so fascinating in this day and age. Circus Circus looks like a nightmare, any other interesting ones to take a peek at?

Hey JaySB: My brother is getting married in October (2016), and somehow has nearly all the plans figured out. I think he is doing the Chapel in Aria and one of the party suites in the Cosmo for the reception. He is struggling with bachelor party plans, and could use some help. He would like to set up driving fast cars, shooting guns, and strip club. I don't know how many people exactly, but I figure we have time and I hope you can help. I know you have helped me with some things in the past and it seems like this is right up your alley. Would it be best to just have my brother hit your website, or is there like another avenue that would be better to make sure he gets the bachelor party of his dreams? For context my brother is 40, and we all thought he would be a bachelor for life and somehow a girl got him to put a ring on it. He know how to party and party hard. Last time I was in Vegas with him was years ago now but we ended up with a private room in the Foundation Room and table service at clubs at Caesars and off strip, and that is just what I can remember. I know it would be best to have you coordinate the bachelor party day/night and get the right places and hope you can help. Heck, it's weird even posting this because I never thought he would get married, let alone plan over a year in advance. Of course we know stuff can and will change between now and then. Strange thing: wedding is on a Tuesday and he wants Sunday to be the bachelor party day and I think go into Monday and 'recover' Monday afternoon/night.

Be sure to check out the casinos on Fremont Street to contrast the ones on the Strip. El Cortez and 4 Queens come to mind as being on the seedier side. But just a walk down Fremont on youtube ought to be a treat if you haven't seen it.

I'm like fifteen seconds into my song, when I look up and see a woman with linebacker shoulders and a frumpy wool dress. Ellis Island is the dregs. If you wanted a shittier casino experience, you'd have to go back in time ten years and play poker at the El Cortez. Naturally, Ellis Island is packed to the gills all the time. I am apparently the only person on the planet who thinks it sucks.
