I played another game today with my DA vs. my dad who was using my old Orks. Would a mechanized, more "elite" Ork army of 'Ardboyz, MANz in wagons, and artillery be at all viable? It'd be fun to have a more "military" feeling Ork army to combat my Valhallans. And yes, I have the good sense not to paint them up as Nazis, even if old Stormboyz totally were:

And I know I don't need another army right now, but I like toying around with ideas.

I'm doing my orks in those colors(my marines are grey with blue) but as an almost all foot slogging army built around 2 x 30 boyz and 2 x 30 grot squads. Since my marines are so mechanized I thought it would be fun to have a green tide.

What else does he have? If he's in Terminator armor it's fine, but he'd be better off with a combi-weapon for funsies. If he's in power armor, it's not worth giving up the extra attack from the bolt pistol. You could use that relic bolter in place of a stormbolter if you want though.

Sorry for another "I should just buy the codex" question but, how are the Dark Angel flyers now? I've got an opportunity to pick one up relatively cheap but I'm hesitating because last edition they seemed to be absolute wanky-toss compared to what most armies got,

Post 9-11 User

I haven't heard players mention them in a while but the DA flyers are better now. The Dark Talon's unique weapon is now strength 10 instead of whatever dumb rules it had before.

Dark Angels "battle force." $115. Laffo:

The Dark Angels Battleforce is a great starting point for a Dark Angels army as well as a fantastic way to bolster an existing force. This multi-part plastic kit contains everything needed to build a Ravenwing Command Squad, three fearsomely-beweaponed bikes covered in iconography and plasma talons; a Space Marine Attack Bike with heavy bolter and multi-melta, and a Land Speeder - this one comes with an assault cannon, a heavy flamer, a Typhoon missile launcher, a multi-melta and a heavy bolter. Also included is a Ravenwing Upgrade Frame, meaning this kit contains literally hundreds of components.

Whoever wrote this sounds like she/he is losing his mind and doesn't know what's in the box. Isn't that Sammael in a Landspeeder?

Lovely Joe Stalin

Yeah it's the current generic (or maybe even original) plastic speeder with the Sammael bits from the upgrade sprue. You would think they'd make a selling point out of being able to build Sableclaw but apparently not.

And that price is mental. I remember buying the old Ravenwing box for about £35.

Wrapped up NOVA yesterday and I think I'm honestly warhammer'd out for a while.

I learned quite a bit from the tournament and met some cool people including MSP, WOM, and TheSexCannon. Ended up 4-4. My list included the following:
Farseer with Jetbike/Stone
Spiritseer

x5 D-Scythes in Wave Serpent

x3 Shuriken Cannon Jetbikes with Warlock
x3 Jetbikes
x3 Jetbikes

x2 Hornets
x2 Crimson Hunter, one Exarch

Aspect Formation:
x7 Warp Spiders
x5 Fire Dragons in Wave Serpent
x5 Dark Reapers in Wave Serpent

Game 1: 14-10 Win vs Space Marines/Space Wolves Wolf-Star
Game 2: 17-9 Win vs Ad Mech/Inquisition/Grey Knights Grav Destroyer-Star
Game 3: 19-7 Win vs Tyranid Flying Hive Tyrants

Game 4: 17-19 Loss vs Tyranid Flying Hive Tyrants (this was the game on the head table with commentary)
Game 5: 6-16 Loss vs Decurion Necrons
Game 6: 19-5 Win vs White Scars Bike Army

Game 7: 15-15 Loss vs Tyranid Flying Hive Tyrants (decided by points killed)
Game 8: 9-17 Loss vs Tau Riptide/Broadside Spam

Game 7 was probably the closest game I've ever played and ended in a draw which was decided by total points killed. The guy made 5 of 6 saves of 4+ on one of his grounded Hive Tyrants to end the game, leaving him with 1 wound remaining and taking the win via total points killed. Game 8 was one of the more frustrating games I've ever played. As I stared across the table at 4 Riptides, 3 Skyray Gunships, and 2 tooled up squads of Broadsides I turned to my friend and mentioned how hosed I was (though I did put up a good fight and took it down to the wire forcing him to shoot me off objectives in turn 7) - the game was a foregone conclusion from the moment we exchanged lists. That didn't stop my opponent from nervously asking the same questions over and over, doom-saying how screwed he was the entire game, and just generally being very frustrating to play. Even after the game ended on turn 7 he was adamant that I would have tabled him had it gone on, to which I was dumbstruck at how he could think 5 Warp Spiders and 5 Dark Reapers were going to clear off the 2 untouched Broadside squads and a Skyray.

I'm not sure what to carry forward from the experience. The NOVA did not include any Super-Heavy or Garg Creatures, I don't expect that to be the same in other GTs if I ever go to one. Fire Dragons were nearly useless in this tournament, but that might not be the case in tournaments allowing Knights. I'm not sure Dark Reapers are worth the effort and cost to keep them safe, and honestly, the Warp Spiders were incredible performers and at one moment ate up 4 Flying Hive Tyrants shots by just jumping out of LoS from each with the Flicker Jump. In retrospect, I would have been better served with the Crimson Hunter formation and 3 squads of Warp Spiders in the Aspect formation.

I took a pretty unconventional list because I hate the stock-standard tournament lists. I made it work as best as I could but at the end of the day it lost to the tournament lists that you see posted around the various forums.

Had a touch of nostalgia over the weekend so I looked over the current GW stuff, apart from a severe :wtc: moment with the new pricing I'm thinking of having another go. Last time I played was 4th ed, but I was more active early 3rd ed.

I still have bits and pieces around the house, but I'll have to buy a bunch of tools again and I'm looking at getting into airbrushing this time around. Looking for suggestions for the following things:
- Paint & brushes
- Tools beyond the obvious knife, pair of clippers, saw, drill
- Air brush & related
- That one thing in your kit no one else thought of

I already have the fume hood & PPE part covered for the air brush, from an unrelated project.

Before anything else, I'd head to your FLGS and see what's being played there - if you've not been following it, Warhammer Fantasy is dead (killed by GW), and there are a Lot more games around that might suit you better than current 40k.

Head over to the 'death thread' and ask there, as here isn't the place.
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3603841

There are also a load more options for paint etc than there where years ago- but here's my current 'space' - I'm half packed to move house so, although I have an airbrush, it's away - as is the desk !

I like the vallejo paints- there the same quality, cheaper and once you get used to them, the dropper bottles mean less waste - still use the GW 'specals' though- like 'Blood for the Blood God' etc
And the One thing is a tea-light holder (the glass, blue thing bottom left in the tool-tray) which is perfect for floating decals off the backing :)

I scooped a few of Evilcraft's combi plasmas to outfit some of my Tzeentch termies with them, but I'm going to have a few left over. Since they look kind of Nurgle-y, I think I'm considering putting a few on my Plague Champions to replace their boltguns, while keeping their bolt pistols and plague knives. That'd be legal, right?

Bloodcrushers haven't been optimal since they were updated in 6th to die to Bolters and Battlecannons, you're running an extra Troop beyond what you are required, and you've got a lot of points in small CSM squads rolling around in Rhino. That's another thing that isn't exactly top of the line. You've got a core of a fairly powerful list there (Maulerfiends own bones and Heldrakes have a well deserved reputation for cooking dudes) but it's certainly not min-maxed. Honestly, it's a couple of good units carrying the rest of the alright stuff. I guess if your friend was running just a bunch of Power Armor with no protection or means to minimize damage he could gripe about the Heldrakes (how much damage did they really do?) but otherwise this would be a perfectly fine (and perfectly fun!) list to play against. In short,
Also, want to see some of them conversions, man.

Yeah, I run Bloodcrushers because I like the models, really - they're super terrible if people just shoot them. T4 ergh. Happy to share pictures, though! I've never been a great painter and the Bloodthirster isn't really finished yet but minus the flesh hounds (they need to be rebased/repainted/totally redone):

Modified a Beastman Cygor model to be running/more hunched over and swapped the head and hands and tail for another Maulerfiend; modified Bloodthirster to be overhead swinging axe rather than just holding it, and the Heldrakes are totally modified, same bodies but one with Maulerfiend head and Balrog wings and the other with Maulerfiend legs, Vampire Count bat dragon head and wings and Cygor horns. Put Skulltaker on a Jugger for my herald as he can't take a juggernaut anymore, and also have my custom painted banner there - first I painted an Ultramarines banner, then stained it with red ink and painted a Khorne symbol over that.

My favorite piece that I don't see enough love for is a small drill bit glued into a piece of wood. I have it matched up to be the exact size of magnets I use to connect space marine arms. Even if I'm not actually drilling it out all the way for magnet I find carving out a small dimple really helps with bonding all types of glue and reduces the amount squished out.

Why not just use a pin-vice ? that's pretty much what they're for (I use a 2mm bit for drilling out holes to pin larger models)

Because I can just hold it in my hands and only costs whatever the drill bit costs? Never needed to vice anything down. I've clamped some stuff but a pin vices just seems superfluous.

Ha, thanks man. It was definitely a good time.

I just watched that filmed game and the commentators were very critical of me putting both Crimson Hunters on the same corner and for the life of me I couldn't understand why. Their thought was that I should have put them in opposite corners. That doesn't make any sense though because the six Hive Tyrants were coming in from ongoing reserve in a Dawn of War deployment. They have a 42" range and no matter how I position it, I can't keep the Crimson Hunter fully on the board and less than 6" from the board edge. I cannot move the flyer off in the same turn I bring it on. Statistically, a single Flying Hive Tyrant will down a jinking Crimson Hunter, much less six of them.

I'm not really sure what they thought was going to keep them alive unless they assumed that splitting them up would cause my partner to put all six into the CH that was marked for death... which would be really stupid.

So I played my first game with the new DA codex on Saturday. I played a Ravenwing strike force against Tau and had a lot of fun. Marker lights seem to really cut the edge you get from rerolling jink saves and I would be interested to see what the army plays like against an enemy that doesn't have such easy access to ignore cover. I really want to run a double demi company list with the Ravenwing Support Squadron auxiliary. 245 points for 7 heavy bolters with 3+ rerollable cover saves (2+ if the dark shroud is up front) on fast skimmers (move 12 and still fire both weapons) that have Interceptor, strafing run, and can fire supporting overwatch at full BS seems really good.
