Troy Baker is a loving awful choice for Ocelot as he manages to take one of the most flamboyant and memorable characters in the series and turn him into "Troy Baker says stuff into a microphone in order to get a paycheck." I have a sneaking suspicion they chose him because he's the only person willing to record the mountains of tape dialogue.

I'm replaying Dark Souls and just got to the Duke's a Archives. This is supposed to be Seath the Scaleless's labratory and library but he's a huge gently caress off dragon and everything here is man sized. How is he supposed to get inside? There aren't any dragon sized doors anywhere. Even if he got in how is he supposed to do research? The books would be the size of a postage stamp to him.

Real shoddy story telling Myazaki.

Not sure if it belongs in this thread, but I just started watching Chip and Ironicus's LP of MGS 3 (want to actually know what the gently caress is going on in PP), and for some reason British guy is telling Snake about having to hunt for food after establishing that the mission has a hard four-hour time limit. Couldn't he have just eaten a sandwich before jumping out of the plane? You'd think that would do him for the at-most four hours he's allotted to complete the mission.

Its a tutorial to get you used to the kill animals and eat them raw to gain their power mechanic. He does the same thing on the main mission after the virtuous mission. Plus if you are actually playing the game you can completely and totally skip it.

All right, Kiefer in MGSV: Dude never speaks. Big Boss is silent for what seems like 80% of the game, almost making him a silent protagonist. Someone asks him a question and he doesn't answer, instead the character speaking to him answers himself, making all character interactions with Boss feel really odd. There aren't even grunts when he falls down or gets shot at or anything, making it super strange when he talks since you really don't expect that to happen anymore; you start to think of him as a mute without realizing it.

This also gives the character a completely different feel and personality since he won't react to anything and seems devoid of emotion, hell, he seems confused all the time, as if he's scared to ask anything so he won't seem stupid. It makes me wonder why they changed the voice actor if they didn't have the funds to make him voice the entire game.

There is however the notable exception of tapes, of which there are plenty of and he DOES ask questions in those. I guess doing mocap and voice acting at the same time turned out to be the super expensive part?

So basically, Kiefer Sutherland being expensive turned out to be the thing dragging the game down. Which is something I really didn't expect.

It wasn't because of Sutherland. The script was written from the start to make Snake really taciturn in this one.

Tutorials in Metal Gear games are always weird if you look at them from a realism standpoint. Like, in reality you wouldn't need to explain to your super spy how to call an elevator or open a door, but you need to explain the mechanic to the players. Either that or Solid Snake is retarded.

Solid Snake generally seems pretty astute, so it's not good for him. Raiden's fresh from training, though, and Naked Snake's clearly an idiot (or at best maybe a savant).

Actually the Archives are one of my favourite little things in games. All around you'll see huge piles of rusted machinery. Throughout the rest of the city, there are tons of contraptions to rotate bridges and move entire towers. What I take away from it is that Seath designed Anor Londo's mechanical la de da and the traps in Sen's fortress. It was only after he began researching immortality and IMO designing the bonfires that he lost it and left his machines to rust.

Yeah, like the beginning of MGS3 where Major tells Snake to "open the survival menu, Snake"

"Hmmmm."

They're definitely pushing the 4th wall with those. Its part of MGS' inherent kookiness, which is at times a good thing (when it means they do silly stuff because its more fun, gently caress realism) and sometimes its a bad thing (when poo poo just gets loving weird, Kojima)

Yeah I'm aware of that. I am not complaining about it (though I do have mixed feelings about Metal Gear writing), it was in response to the person saying "well why not just eat a sandwich before going on the mission." It was intended to be like "really? That's the part that's unrealistic to you?"

Considering how hard Kagemasa has been working to burn Kojima and everything he stands for to the ground, they should thank the deity of their choice that we even got MGSV in the first place.

Link? I read about the plans for another chapter at the end (which gave some closure about two important characters who, as it stands, literally walk out of the game near the end and are never seen again) which was cut because the planned boss battle wouldn't run on any modern or last-gen console, but not this.

I'm reserving judgement until I get to the end. I'm expecting Kojima to pull the rug out from under us in more than a few ways that piss off a lot of people who can’t handle postmodern/quirky/flawed but ambitious narratives, just like he did in… not in MGS1, in MGS2, not in MGS3, in MGS4, not in Peace Walker. So it’s probably time for it again.

I mean part of me really wants the game to end with Big Boss having a naked fistfight in a thunderstorm with Zero/Skullface/whoever on top of the new Metal Gear while Push it to the Limit plays before snarling “looks like your plans are about to… take off” and Fultoning them into space, before cutting to a young Solid Snake infiltrating Outer Heaven, but the dude writes unconventional narratives and I’m glad someone in the industry does even if he’s far from perfect and often kind of bad.

The focus on freeform gameplay and player agency reflects the fact that, in-mission, whoever you're playing as is a character second and a player avatar first. It's interesting but I probably would prefer if he said more.

I don't know about the other stuff they're saying, but he's been pretty open about there being a last level that was supposed to resolve all the plot strings and apparently it got cut.

There's a whole breakdown of like how the scene was scripted to play out, there's some article about it.

I'm trying to hold off until I beat the game first before I dig into that stuff though.

This might have been mentioned earlier, but MGS: Phantom Pain is pretty much amazing in all aspects, except a few. I hate the lame-rear end checkpoints and no manual saving. I'm not looking to save-scum, but you can lose missions through pretty random poo poo sometimes. Completely finished a mission, just finishing some housecleaning (stealing everything not nailed down and strapping people to balloons). Low and behold, a survivor. No problem, flank him and choke him out. Sadly, did not see the shotgun guy crouched in front of him. Snake gets blasted to bits while I scream at the TV for Snake to stop choking the first stooge and run for it. Or worse yet, the escort missions. Escorted some mission-vital NPCs to an evac chopper. Enemy chopper shows up, I blast i to bits... except that the chopper, which wasn't moving, falls in a spiral bee-line and crashes onto the NPCs. Checkpoints? Either the beginning of the mission or so far back as to be loving pointless. Every first time through a mission I'm a meticulous ghost ninja that takes 30 minutes choking everyone out and patiently waiting for darkness or patrol routes. 2nd time around? gently caress it, shoot everything that moves, don't care. Just give me better checkpoints, is all I'm saying.

What's really dragging down mgs5 discussions is that lots of people don't even want to talk about any of the negatives instead going "it's insanely good".

The ending twist is weak and it really undermines the game themes. We were told we'll see BB's downfall and it doesn't happen. Also Kojima often talked how 5 will have race as one of the themes and some taboo subjects and none of these really appear in the game. Not even subtly.

Gameplay is still fantastic but the plot comes off as an afterthought.

I though the MGSV mission "Lingua Franca" was pretty poorly designed. The premise is that you get hired to extract a prisoner but don't know where they're keeping him so you have to follow an interpreter to find out where he is. On the surface it doesn't sound too bad but in practice it becomes a huge time sink as you just kind of sit around watching the guy through your scope waiting for him to slowly walk somewhere. It's made worse by the fact that he doesn't just go straight from objective to objective and instead will just kind of wander around the mission area.
