Judah is hard to photograph/video. When he's out, he wants to be on me and also hates the phone (or anything in my hands except for a few specific things, for :derptiel: reasons that I'm not privy to). When he's in, it's hard to get a good picture because of the cage bars. I'm gonna try though, dammit, once my phone finishes charging.

I will try to get him saying that but he only says it in two very specific circumstances, so no guarantee. It's the first recognizable thing he ever learned to say :3: When he gets super-excited he kind of tries to combine it with a whistle.

Oh jeez that's cute :3: How the hell did you get it to do that??? The only ones that will get even remotely close to people around my house are the hummingbirds because they fear fuckin' nothing, I swear. And the mountain swallows but that was only because they'd dive-bomb you if you lingered on the steps under their nests

The yellow-eyed juncos have been going nuts on the grass/weeds/everything in my flowerbed out front today, I was trying to get close enough to lift the screen but he was having none of it.

Chickadees are very bold and curious, and one of the easiest wild birds to hand feed. Apparently all you have to do is go to a place they like, hold seed in your hands, and sit very still for several hours until they adjust. I'm guessing the people in the Birding thread might have more ideas.

Huh, that is really cool. I wonder if I could manage that with the juncos before they gently caress off for the winter (if they do, as far as I can tell they're not even supposed to be up here so who knows), they're reasonably bold little shits in comparison to everything but hummingbirds.

It might make up for not getting to live in a place with yardbirds like Dreggon's.

The sponsors will like you better this way, trust me.

This place that I hike is a wildlife sanctuary that's been around much longer than I've been alive. All the chickadees there are hand trained pretty much through the generations. There's something like 46 acres and as long as you have sunflower seeds you'll have birds following you down the trails. Had cardinals, nut hatches, chickadees, an oriole, and a blue jay following me. Only the chickadee and nuthatches came to my hand. That picture was also taken up in the observation tower near the tree top line.

Now I am become Borb,
the Destroyer of Seeb
Hey friends,

Thank you so much for all the kind words about Tito. I wish I could grab a drink with you all and share bird stories. (Non-alcoholic - I stopped drinking a few years back.) I actually broke one of my main rules today and woke up Wandy the cockatiel and have her on my shoulder right now. I'm going through a weird transition in my life that makes everything a lot heavier than it would normally be. I'm just happy for the kind words, for my dad making the little spot for Tito, for being able to pet him while he passed, and to wrap him up in a cloth with some of his favorite foods. Being basically a depressed atheist I know it's all for not - but on the off chance it isn't I want to send him to the clearing right. I can't describe holding him after he had the shot that would end his suffering. He somehow managed to open his eye and look at me, then close it and pass. It seemed calm but what the gently caress do I know.

This is going to sound strange, but if you are a lurker thinking about getting a bird - don't. They bring me such joy but I got them when I was young and had some problems to face. I lived with friends at the time who loved birds but I eventually moved away to deal with my problems. I put the birds through hell they didn't deserve. I almost offed myself when I was getting my poo poo together. I basically took a job in Kansas with the thought that I'd either clean up my act, quit drinking, and get my life together - or end it. I came very close to the latter. My birds helped get me through that period - having happy little guys that cheered me up and I knew needed me. But they didn't deserve the environment I provided them.

Let me back off my previous statement - I'm not saying don't get birds, but wait until you are old enough to make the decision like you are bringing a child into the world. These are incredibly intelligent beings that deserve your all. Literally, even a little cockatiel should be thought of like a kid. They aren't disposable and you should keep them come hell or high water. This week I start a job that I wouldn't of taken if my Mom wasn't able to watch the birds. I'll be traveling Monday through Friday and I used to have a job with that kind of travel. I know some circumstances will come up where good owners have to let go of their birds, but if you are thinking about it like a casual commitment please God keep in mind these animals will be with you for twenty or more years. Are you ready for that? In hindsight, I wasn't and I'm lucky I'm at a spot now where I can provide an awesome environment for my birds to live in. Being a single alcoholic, which I was, isn't the type of person who should get a bird. I've had birds most of my life and rescued Wandy the cockatiel from a poo poo situation but I really regret how crap of an owner I was when I was going through some my demons.

On a happier note - this potato will always be a little jackass. I've got walnut slivers which she likes and little rice cakes which I enjoy. But little Wandy is always determined to get the junk food because her previous owners apparently spent seven years feeding her cheese goldfish and cheese nips. gently caress off out of my snack, little winged potato!

I think I'm going to start posting here again. You are a kind group and I miss you all. I'll be traveling the country soon for work so let me know if you want to exchange bird stories in person!

It needs a good clean, but on top of all the screws it has these weird dollops of stuff:

Mum reckoned that they'd be ok but I really don't think they will be and I'm probably going to remove them before I let the birds on it. Is there anything else I can do to make sure that this thing is safe?

Pookie is now completely obsessed with rice cakes - I got her a packet of no-added-anything ones to use as a replacement in her foraging toys for the nuts she's not allowed to eat anymore and my. god. they are a hit. She'll climb straight back into her cage after being in there for most of the day if I refill her spinny wheel toy with fragments of bland as hell rice cake. I'm pretty sure it is a texture thing since she doesn't actually eat any of them as far as I can tell.

Also she had lentil curry with added peas on a bed of potatoes for dinner :kimchi:

(the good lentil curry, not the bad one with spinach that is evil and cannot be eaten at all)

Is it a bird house? It's hard to see. TBH I wouldn't use it if it has mysterious crap all over it, and its wood so can't really be cleaned properly (even with baking in the oven for a while iirc)

Chickadees are bold and fierce little assholes that give no fucks. At my parent's birdfeeders we'll occasionally get jerkface bluejays or big, scary woodpeckers, either of which will temporarily scare off the other birds or at least keep them off the main feeder. The chickadees though will get right up in their business and be saucy as hell. Even if the jays charge the chickadees they just jump off, hover for a second, and then land again.

They're tough little bastards, which I guess you'd have to be if you're that small and surviving an entire winter :3:

But in general, a grey's rage comes off to me as impotent and adorable.

Yeah it is. I saw a plate that has the name of the market stand and googled it and found

It's bad enough in the picture. Every time I've interacted with an African grey, the way they look like they're just carefully analyzing EVERYTHING (because they are) has just freaked me out on some small level. Like it's way obvious that there's a smart brain in there and as someone who doesn't live in a place with apes or anything, being confronted with that face-to-face is a jarring experience as a member of a different species.
