He followed that up with God Bless America, which seems summed up by 'gently caress You white people, you're loving everything up *pew**pew**pew*' which sounded pretty try-hard. Then he did a found footage Bigfoot mockumentary, and is soon to be releasing a documentary about a comedian facing his childhood molestation. And somewhere between all that he directed some episodes of Community.

Yeah, Bobcat's done a bunch of directing and stuff after he dropped the character and 'grew up' a bit. He was on the Sklar brothers' podcast recently. He doesn't talk about the character very much - it's mostly about his movies and getting back into stand-up (and how he used to joke about Cosby being a terrible person back in the 80s and 90s, before anyone knew that Cosby was a terrible person). I think he's an interesting dude, so I enjoyed it. The stuff about Barry Crimmins is serious and bleak, but that's kind of expected - Barry Crimmins is the comedian who was molested that SomeJazzyRat was talking about, and the documentary Bob's making about him is called "Call Me Lucky," if anyone was curious. http://www.earwolf.com/episode/bobcat-caught/ For whatever reason, I'll always remember the bit Bobcat did about starting a fire on the Tonight Show, and then having to do a PSA about it. "If you're ever on the Tonight Show, kids, don't set it on fire!" Fifty Farts has a new favorite as of 21:50 on Sep 9, 2015 |

the other day I found out that the main character in Kevin Smith's Dogma is NOT played by Jeanine Garofalo, but that she IS in the movie. Not sure how I managed to screw that one up, as I've seen the movie at least six times. Also, for questionable etymology: "Avocado" comes from the French 'avec a do' which roughly translates to "to do with," because who the gently caress eats an avocado by itself?

That's wrong, avocado comes from the Aztec word ahuacatl, which means "testicle", for the way they hang from the tree. They were thought to be a fertility fruit because of this. Source:I did a school report on avocados once

Another questionable etymology I guess: apricot, long assumed to come from the same root as 'precocious' due to its early ripening. However English had it 'abrecock' and it seems to be from a lineage through old French then old Spanish down from al-barquq, an Arabic word for several in the Prunus genus. This makes more sense given that in Argentine Spanish and all Portuguese it's referred to as 'damasco' as in Damascus. In Spanish it's the even more definitive albariciquero. I suppose the question is did it become apricot simply from linguistic shift or did it converge to sound like precocious because of the coincidence?

Davinci posted:That's wrong, avocado comes from the Aztec word ahuacatl, which means "testicle", for the way they hang from the tree. They were thought to be a fertility fruit because of this. Interestingly, testicle is derived from latin "little witness", and avocado in many languages is similar/identical to Avocat/Advokat/etc, which means lawyer. You could probably have a whole courtroom full of testes if you try hard enough.

I'm not very good at reading Dutch but the nl wikipedia seems to say it comes from Dutch Antilles & originally contained avocado. Eggs were substituted when it was brought to Europe. The German word Eier is common slang for testicles.
