For every example of field workers, there's examples of construction workers having to make a choice between making the same on welfare as they do on current wage rates. Of course, I cook in restaurants in California so I'm 100% aware of this fact. I was more making a joke that freepers would like to see black people back in the fields.

What a weird straw to grasp at; black people only make up about 10% of the population. Even if 25% of black people support Trump, that's only something like 6 million people, mostly in the South in states the GOP already controls. What's amazing is that according to Gallop he's managed to piss of 86% of Hispanic people, which is about 43 or 44 million people , mostly concentrated in the south-west and Florida , and all he can think to do is repeat the same stupid bullshit that cost the GOP California , New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada, and is rapidly losing them Florida, Arizona and Texas.

People sure have a hard-on for laying blame at the feet of migrant fruit pickers who travel thousands of miles each year to follow crop schedules/locations, sometimes work to death on modern day plantations, and so on. Yes, they are "stealing jobs" from citizens that would do the work at proper minimum wage, but it's 100% the fault of the greedy, immoral assholes that choose to exploit illegals by paying far less than the required minimum or-- worse yet-- pennies per tomato harvested.

The Republican Party is really loving good at alienating former Republican voting blocs if those blocs aren't white men. Hispanic people trend religious and used to fairly reliably vote Republican until the 70s or 80s, but are now a strong and solid Democratic voting bloc. Black voters drat near voted 100% Republican until the 1930s and a big chunk of them continued to vote Republican until 1964; nowadays black voters support the Democrats by over 90% in most elections. Muslim-Americans voted almost entirely for George W. Bush in 2000, and are now a near-unanimous Democratic support stronghold less than two decades later. It's going to come back to gently caress them in the rear end eventually; their electoral strategy for the last 40 years or so was built around basically being a single-ethnicity party, in a country where that ethnicity is well on its way to not being a majority anymore.

Agreed except it's not pennies per tomato, it's pennies per POUND of tomatoes. I still kinda chuckle when I remember deep south states having millions of dollars of produce literally rot on the ground because they decided they didn't want "illegals" picking crops anymore and no sane American citizen (even those on unemployment) would do it for the wages they offered.

The family certainly deserves a big payout for the way the police handled him in the back of that truck, but i cant help but feel like that money will come right out of something useful, like after school programs or adult education. Something that would keep kids off the street and away from police or bad influences.
