Also don't discount the sterling work Dani Filth has done in turning corpsepaint into a utility to present him as having cheekbones and a proper jawline. A black metal pioneer's work is never done. Although I think he got some inspiration from Ancient.TollTheHounds posted:At the risk of starting the dumb discussion again, I read through the last few pages and it's hilarious to me that anyone would discount Satyricon's Nemesis Devina It's not about "discounting" it - it's more that it is not essential. Even Satyricon's best work presents nothing Enslaved and Emperor (amongst others, funnily enough Marduk's Opus Nocturne isn't far off either) hadn't already. Am I saying that this means no one can enjoy it? Absolutely not, just that the band hasn't produced anything that is absolutely integral to the progression of the musical style.

Lol Euronymous never did vocals for Mayhem, it was either Atilla, Dead, or Maniac/Messiah you were hearing on early Mayhem. Old Darkthrone is loving awesome, if you can't get down on A Blaze in the Northern Sky and don't have the attention span for Transilvanian Hunger then you're weak. Satyricon is loving great to, Dark Medieval Times is a killer record!

KozmoNaut posted:Elitism and closed mindedness like you're showing is what's always been killing the scene, because any sort of new ideas are immediately panned as not being authentic enough, ie. exactly like everything was in the early 90s. RIP the black metal scene, killed by elitists like The Clit Avoider who listen to black metal that hasn't aged well enough to be sold by Season of Mist. KozmoNaut posted:And I'm from Scandinavia, so I'm the one who should be all elitist about it. Let's just end that here. I have lots of black metal friends too. KozmoNaut posted:I'm not trying to pull a "no true Scotsman" card here, but since I do live in Scandinavia, obviously Norwegian black metal (and Swedish death metal) are huge in the collective conscience here. Putting an emphasis on simply being from Norway and on wearing corpsepaint are both superficial misconceptions about black metal. There was a loose collective of artists who aspired to make "Norwegian black metal" something of their own around 1991-93, and the works which emerged from this collective were very significant. This continued, but was also diluted, over the few years after as waves of publicity roared in and "True Norwegian Black Metal" became little more than an advertising slogan. To think that one is relevant or knowledgeable merely by proximity to Norway is ignorant and arrogant. Corpsepaint is another wretchedly dated icon which is commonly recognized as an icon of Norwegian black metal, yet donned by clowns and abandoned by its innovators. Is there a single one of the old Norwegian black metal bands still wearing corpsepaint? Burzum, Darkthrone, Emperor, Satyricon, and Mayhem have all long since abandoned it, though Attila wears morbid theatrical makeup with Mayhem. The "old" bands who still adhere to this caricature adopted the guise of "True Norwegian Black Metal" after Euronymous died - a turning point in terms of publicity. My point here is that these are very poor points to reference regarding knowledge of black metal. Someone choosing to represent themself as a corpsepainted devotee of True Norwegian Black Metal in 2015 is probably an idiot who knows little beyond what was marketed as such beginning in the mid 90s when it was earning a lot of publicity. Since someone asked about old non-Norwegian black metal, have some Ancient Rites (Belgium) from 1992. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUNzIHuL40g

Corpsepaint is pretty far from an innovation of the Norwegian scene anyway. And early Ancient Rites is killer, the mid period is interesting too in its own way.

But I do think all music is playful and a bit silly when it comes down to it. It's just the nature of rhythm and melody. Plenty of musicians across entirely different genres set out to make music that is the complete antithesis of what you lay out as "all music". I am no longer talking in terms of black metal alone here. There are reasons dirges exist, there's reasons why some genres that are nothing more than melancholic self-pity exist, and that is because there are frequently things that people which to broadcast which have absolutely no playful or silly elements at all. Many, if not most, compositions will comprise a range of thoughts or emotions that a musician wishes to convey - and they do so via both lyrical and musical medium. This isn't about musicians thinking "i'm serious about being evil", this is about musicians actually making something with substance and feeling. By reducing music to "silly", you're ridiculing an entire art and its craftsmanship.

Technically he's wrong, but you'll never be able to get as deeply invested in it as he is. I couldn't agree more with this. Black metal has evolved as any genre has, but look back to the early-second wave and any band will tell you that black metal is completely designed to sound loving terrible, hence the production values on (for example) the Unholy Trilogy. From the outside looking in it looks like a bunch of edgy teenage Satanists making lovely garage-music (I'm talking about the early Norwegian scene here) but from the inside out it represents evil in it's purest form. That's why I think a lot of people misinterpret Gaahl's famous "Satan" interview. When he says black metal is about Satan I don't think he's referring to the theistic Satan, he's referring to negativity in it's purest form. It sounds elitist and "kvlt"but that's how it is. It's not about how it looks to the outside, it's about the music itself. Kvlt! fucked around with this message at 13:20 on Sep 8, 2015 |

You're not getting what I'm saying, but that's OK. I don't want to argue, since we will probably never agree. I just want to clarify that I am not belittling anyone, I just think trying to represent evil in its purest form in the shape of music is destined to fail. Music simply isn't the right medium for it, even though it is so effective at stirring people's feelings. E: I a way I actually am a little envious of people who can get totally fired up and just go loving crazy about music. I mean yeah, I can get going and headbang and all that, but some people just go 110% and live the music, at least while it's playing. Maybe it's just more real to them? And it's probably what helps some of the most amazing live performances, they get completely lost in it. Don't get me wrong, I've had tears in my eyes and shivers down my spine from certain performances and compositions, and the entire "Judgement" by Anathema forced me to sit down and think about a lot of things for a couple of hours the first time I listened to it, but I've never gotten the whole "go crazy wild" thing.
