Yeah the more public shame they receive the angrier they'll feel, but you're virtually never going to have a "come to jesus" moment with these people, so gently caress them. The best tactic is to scream at them until they can't express themselves in civilized society anymore. gently caress truth in the middle equivocating, their truth deserves to be stomped out. Yeah exactly. I'm not asking for everyone to conform over night, but at this point if your reaction to people like Kim Davis is feeling that her obstructionism and a rally featuring the confederate flag, a speaker from the League of the South and several signs equating the Supreme Court to ISIS and calling AIDS god's punishment is "lol, they both think they're right, aren't these partisans funny. Turns out the truth isn't always between two extremes.

The period between 1917 and 1936 or so was the closest the US has ever come to a Second Civil War - hell, at times, it actually was a war. You had at least four full-on armed insurrections by anarchists, communists, or trade unionists, the military deploying tanks, artillery, aerial bombers, and lethal chemical weapons against American citizens, a veterans' rights march on the National Mall being cleared out with tanks and flamethrowers, and literally hundreds of lynchings, pogroms, and other attacks against blacks, immigrants, and the organized left. There are parts of rural Appalachia where archaeologists still occasionally dig up old weapon caches hidden out there by guerrillas in the 20s. It's really hard to impress on people just how dangerously unstable the country was for a while there - nothing since even comes close to it, not even the worst of the 1960s uprisings. Because this is America, black people caught the worst of it, of course. Nobody actually knows how many people were massacred in Greenwood here in Tulsa, but it was in the hundreds at least. They were just dumping bodies into the river at one point, and there are multiple mass graves known to exist.

Their comparing Kim Davis to Rosa Parks got me thinking... have there been any actually successful protests by conservative groups? I've only ever seen them make ineffectual, homophobic and lovely displays that cause no progress in any direction except against them. The Tea Party was never really a 'protest' except in the minds of the people on the absolute lowest level, so that doesn't really count. I mean, the KKK I guess, but I was more thinking of protests not based in uncloaked, blind hatred. Maybe even something that enacted, or at least envisioned, positive change.
