I'm most surprised by Bhutan in some states. It led me on a wiki-dive where I learned that Bhutan (a country with a population of 700,000) apparently forced out about 100,000 people of Nepalese descent in the 90's and after spending years in refugee camps, most of them eventually resettled in the US. You learn something new every day.
