This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it. You can pre-order 'Writing’s On The Wall' on CD or vinyl here http://po.st/atniVf, or on iTunes from midnight.

This is gonna be amazing. I hope it's more like his Disclosure stuff than his solo material, but either way he's gonna do a great job with it.

I follow this thread because I'm not really a pop fan, but I sometimes tune into Top 40 stations in my car and want to make sense of what I'm listening to. I'm always impressed by a catchy, well-produced pop song. It's interesting that everyone here seems to love Carly Rae Jepsen's new album, because nobody in my radio market is playing any of her songs at all, except "Call Me Maybe" once in a while still.

The two most popular songs of the last month have been the Demi Lovato song that sounds just like Katy Perry (did that turn out to be the "song of the summer" for 2015?) and the Selena Gomez song that sounds just like Lana Del Rey. And "Bad Blood," of course.

I aggressively dislike "Bad Blood", especially the radio edit that features Taylor Swift doing a sing talk section instead of Kendrick Lamar's rap. :wtc: It really doesn't help how much it's been overplayed.

Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora handled it much better with "Black Widow", in my opinion (the video was more interesting, as well).

I'm not a huge 1989 fan but I did like a few songs - Bad Blood is not one of them. It sounds like a nursery rhyme and I don't understand why they went with that as a single.

I hope this turns out to be true, because the album still hasn't been released here, and I've stubbornly decided to listen to the whole single when it comes out and not, erm, "preview" it in some way.
Seriously, who in this day and age decided it was a good idea to release a pop album MONTHS apart in different regions?

A rare Max Martin miss, even if it was a commercial success.

I mean look at this list:

That's a list of Martin's #1 songs in the US I think, and Since U Been Gone, believe it or not, only made #2. There are a couple of more Top 10 tracks from that time, like Behind These Hazel Eyes or Who Knew. But generally speaking, it really was a pretty quiet time for him.

I can't believe Sam Smith's doing a Bond theme song. Watch it be the most boring Bond song of all time.

To be fair though, Sam Smith is capable of doing interesting stuff, but I don't think it'll happen this time.

After hearing "Earned It", which has a certain Bond movie theme feel to it, I would have put my chips on The Weeknd to do the next Bond theme.

Well, Sam Smith is a great vocalist, and the Skyfall theme with Adele was pretty great, though I did not know until just now that Bond theme singers write their own song for the film.

At least it cant be as bad as this gem.

Not always so; most recent example that occurs to me is "GoldenEye" - Tina Turner sang it, but it was written by Bono and the Edge, of all people.

Also, "Thunderball" is great and so is Tom Jones. :colbert:

I guess they must have made some bank on Skyfall getting the radio play that it did, because Sam Smith on a Bond theme could not be a worse fit. It also fits the broader "trend":

Skyfall- Good theme
Quantum of Solace- Bad theme
Casino Royale- Good theme
Die Another Day- Bad theme
World is Not Enough- Good theme
Tomorrow Never Dies- Subpar theme (mostly just lovely by comparison to k.d. lang's theme)
GoldenEye- Good theme

Skyfall for me was the only "new" theme that could touch the holy trinity of Bond themes (Spy Who Loved Me/Live and Let Die/Goldfinger).

I mean, yeah, in contrast to something like the new Empress Of album (which is fantastic and I just posted about it in the indie thread yesterday), it's a really simple thing. But her voice is very good and the music is very well-produced, so I'm happy with it. It's certainly not any more "basic" than bland albums like 1989.

I mean Artpop is still the gold standard for modern pop music production (that title track sounds like nothing else I've ever heard) but I'll take what I can get.

Unfortunately that's not an edit, that's the actual album version. It's probably my least favorite on the album. They were playing the video version for a while and then switched back for some reason.

There actually is a radio edit of the song that keeps the instrumental remix but replaces Kendrick Lamar's verses with the original lyrics.

This kind of electronic music production just, to me, sounds really flat. Deradoorian and Angel Olsen are a couple of recent artists who have a nice organic sound to them with a bit more depth, IMO, although too far away from anything pop to belong in this thread.

I don't think we are ever going to be friends. The first 3 minutes of it are interesting, though, before she has a chance to remind us how absurd her lyrics are.

Edit: vvv "Call Me Maybe," I can actually understand the appeal; it is a perfectly-hewed artifact. But in repetition I guess it becomes rote.

I love a good rap feature! I get so annoyed when stations cut them. The only recent one I dislike is Kid Ink's feature on Worth It, and it might be because both of his verses are identical and nonsensical, bringing down an otherwise B+ song.
