Lessig doesn't believe Democrats will retake Congress, which is why you need to vote for him to be President so he can get Congress to pass campaign finance bills that the GOP is blocking.quote:Lessig, however, believes that Democratic control of Washington—which we had just six years ago—is an extraordinarily improbable outcome that shouldn’t be the basis of a political strategy, unlike his own extraordinarily improbable candidacy. “Republicans are here to stay, and…a Democratic supermajority in Congress is as likely as world peace,” he wrote. Voters are too resigned to believe that partisanship is the answer, he told me. To that end, he believes it would be counterproductive to attack Republicans and more effective to go after the root causes of political polarization on both sides. Look, this all makes perfect sense and Lessig is a modern political genius. A very smart guy.

It makes sense if you genuinely believe Congress is full of people with America's best interests at heart and faith in their convictions. The kind of scenario where politicians are dramatically sighing and going "all this free money is awful! It's keeping me from helping America! Oh, if only SOMEONE would introduce a bill to keep money out of politics!". So yeah, Dumbass.

Maybe in political Mortal Kombat Trump's special attack should be Tweeting, where his cellphone shoots out angry Twitter birds that damage the opponent with beak and talons. I still think he should have a "You're Fired" fatality where a big gout of flame crisps his enemy.

Dahn posted:I think your right, this would be the death of the two party system. Looking at the history of the composition of Congress, since there haven't been more than 10 non-R/D members in total since mid-way through FDR's administration, and since even Teddy Roosevelt couldn't break the system up, and finally, since I'm not seeing a large movement of 3rd-partyists, I doubt that now it's actually going to happen. Unless you're expecting the Tortilla Coast Guard to recaucus as a separate Party, with Trump as their leader? Going to be hard if he loses, as he has no position otherwise. Plus it's what, ~42 people, or <10% of the House, and Ted Cruz (and maybe Rand Paul if he decides to work with him) in the Senate?

I assume "replace the two party system" here means "shake up the current dynamic, for instance by sinking the Republicans and giving the Democrats a brief period of Eternal Liberal Darkness while SOMETHING ELSE forms" because the American electoral system seems to be such that, barring some kind of mass principled voting behavior by literally tens of millions of people who would be getting nothing for it, there will always be two majority parties. Now, there's no law saying those parties have to be far-right and center-right/centrist, of course.

I really don't understand why it's so hard to understand that Hillary is, overall, liked within the party, even if you or I aren't huge fans. Whether Bernie or Hillary win, within 2 weeks of winning they'll have around 90% or higher favorability with Democrats.
