However, since they have no real reason to and the architecture to keep doing this is all there, it's far more likely we just keep the status quo.

It's a vehicle to get women to send pictures of themselves to him and it worked loving flawlessly. He wields a power that all men wish they had. But yeah, it'd be one thing if they didn't draw attention to it but it's all butts n' boobs when Quiet's around. If you don't bother looking she makes sure to move in a position where either her butt or boobs are in full frame. A shame too, she has a few pretty good character moments. Unfortunately, a Sniper Wolf or The Boss she is not.

So Tony Zhou just posted a new Every Frame A Painting, this time on how Vancouver is anonymous in films. Funnily enough, I didn't see this from my YouTube feed, but by reading the newspaper and seeing an article about his video, and how the city is responding to that criticism of looking "generic" by having future building projects being designed by international and local architects to be more unique and eye-catching. There's a part of me that wants to believe that Kojima was going for some sort of commentary with Quiet, since she gets set on fire at the beginning of the game and the next time you see her it's all bikinis and pantyhose, like it's a Bullshit Science way of dealing with burn trauma. Like, from the moment you first recruit her the camera starts getting all up in her rear end and between her tits, ogling her at every opportunity, but then you put two and two together and realize she's the one who got the fire bath at the beginning and then you just feel disgusted with yourself, and every subsequent butt shot has a sense of wrongness the same way that putting a child soldier in your crosshair does. The whole photosynthesis explanation fucks with that idea though. It also isn't helped that most gamers don't have nearly the self-awareness necessary to feel any sort of shame when blatantly objectifying women, so any intended message beyond "Wank Material" is bound to go right over most guys' heads. Probably giving Kojima too much credit, but that was my thinking early on.

Kojima is a writer where you're almost never exactly sure whether you're giving him too much or not enough credit. I'll grant him that he usually has a point to his stories, and when they fall apart at least they fall apart in interesting ways which is more than you can say for a hell of a lot of games. I think somewhere there's an alternative universe where he became a filmmaker and alternate universe Kyle is reviewing his films. With The Quiet specifically though, while there very well could be some point he was trying to make, let us also not forget that we're talking about a game made by someone who sprinkles literal softcore porn mags and posters all over his games. In fact, the fact that he does that almost makes me want to take him at his word that it wasn't just/primarily for fanservice. Almost. Quiet is always half-naked because there are parasites inside her that basically turn her into a plant: she photosynthesizes and requires plenty of water and oxygen, absorbed through her skin because she basically has no organs left. There are at least two other characters who have her condition, but they are fully clothed at all times, make of that what you will.
