Seems like that phenomenon happened a lot in the 90's, where styles and scenes were aped ironically to show how lame they were, and then people in those scenes (or worse people looking for scenes) somehow missed the memo and liked it genuinely, ruining the whole ironic intent. Like, that seemed to happen regardless of the scene. I remember hearing rumors when NIN released "Broken" that it was originally intended by Trent Reznor to be a middle finger at his fans, but then it sold like gangbusters and that was the direction he took things from there for example.

There was no radio stations, and even the clubs when I was old enough to go still played top 40 pop songs. I only knew of the existence of a lot of stuff is I had a friend who was and still is super into industrial/goth music so I was at least aware of anything that would even be close that wasn't Nine Inch Nails or Marilyn Manson. Nothing like being asked if it was a new NIN song when you had headhunter on a mix tape. Speaking of that, mixtapes may not be limited to the 90s, but I associate them with it, because everyone had them and we traded them around. I still have some at my parents house where you can hear the DJ talking over intos and outros. I'd lay in bed at night listening to the radio with my headphones on and hit record when a song I liked came on because the radio station would play the top 10 songs at 10pm. Europe produced some pretty cringe worthy stuff, but so did us in Canada. A guy who worked at K-Mart back in the 90s kept some cassette tapes of the PA muzak they played in the store, and he uploaded a ton of recordings to archive.org: https://archive.org/details/attentionkmartshoppers There's some really funky and also kinda eerie (the cassettes are pretty warbly) and melancholy tracks in there, punctuated by Generic Corporate Announcer Guy talking about monthly deals in the store. This poo poo's sure to bring back memories of being dragged to K-Mart by your mom in the 90s. Now it's just a matter of time before the vaporwave remixers get ahold of these recordings and go hog wild.
