I always figured that with the way transmissions were getting, eventually automakers would recognize the EPA test cycle and drop to an extra-fuel-economy mode. Looks like VW was just ahead of the game on this one. I'm surprised they managed to make anything that complicated that didn't immediately fail, though. Perhaps the EPA was alerted by the flashing light on the dashboard that said "CHECK EMISSIONS FRAUD SYSTEM."

Hyundai was fined $300 million for overstating the fuel mileage on 1.2 million cars, but from what little reading I did on that fine it may not have been fully intentional on their part. I would expect VAG to face a much steeper fine though as there is no doubt on intent and they misrepresented the actual emissions put out by the vehicles as well as the fuel mileage (assuming my memory is correct, these are measured at the same time as counting everything that comes out of the engine allows you to determine the fuel consumption as well.)

I don't have a picture of one handy but just thought I'd ask what the deal is with this minor trend I've been seeing around Seattle lately: Various GM W body cars with giant 22+ inch rims. Is there a reason this has become some sort of mini thing or am I just commuting through a small localized anomaly? I've seen at least four Luminas (especially a notable bright green one) and a three early aught Impalas including a broken down one this morning over the past few months. The busted down one this week was cute with all the peeled paint everywhere, various dents and scrapes, and four gigantic fresh-off-the-shelf chrome rims. Is there a reason it's fashionable to strap wheels to what are really bad to mediocre American cars made in the mid nineties to early 00s?

Yeah, they're called 'donks' or 'hi-risers'. It's a southern thing.

A regular donk is a 5-10 thousand dollar car with 10 thousand dollar 26-30 inch rims on it. With a broke rear end donk, you buy the cheapest, biggest wheels you can find first, then find a car that they bolt to. there are a ton of 20-22" 5x115 wheels out there because people like to stick em on the chrysler 300. that just happens to be the same bolt pattern as most busted rear end chevies.

The supply of cheap RWD B-body GM cars have been drying up, so the cash-strapped end of the Donk culture's moving on to W-bodies (Regal, Grand Prix, Impala), H-bodies (Bonneville, Eighty-Eight, LeSabre) and even A-bodies (think pre-97 Century, Cutlass Ciera).

I had DRIFTY on my FR-S and I transferred them to the Fiesta ST I traded it in for. Had them on for about 6 months until I bought a second car (NC) and transferred them to that.

When you think about it, there was literally nothing else that fit all of this criteria out there at the time everybody started dumping the ACVW chassis and turned to molesting Fieros for kit cars. Now I think early Miatas might qualify as well, but the horde of Miata based kit cars just hasn't hit yet.
