I was in a co-ed division and the worst part of it was sharing the compartment with assholes from another div. I was the RCPO and having half the div across the hall meant the ACPO dealt with them and I never had to since RCPO/ACPO are always opposite genders. I found out later on that the female side of the hallway was like Auschwitz the whole time because the girls in charge just went nuts with rules and "talking is secure". Male side was chill. The last night we took the newbies from the other half of the compartment out of bed and forced them to let us battle them like Pokemon.

I am a tech rep., and just had a junior sailor (STG, not yet in C School) ask me about Arc suits. What the gently caress is an arc suit and how much is this stupidness costing us. Did I miss a memo? The other guys I have asked out here (all Navy, mostly ETCs, one or two FCs) know nothing.

Ket might know more on it, as I don't have the NSTM 300 on me, but it seems like something only real electritions would ever use in the navy.

Apparently there are students on hold at FASW waiting for them so they can learn maintenance. Getting paid waiting for some loving suit that we don't use. We work on black box systems. That's ridiculous. 8 months, 11 days.

Did I miss a memo? The other guys I have asked out here (all Navy, mostly ETCs, one or two FCs) know nothing. I can explain. We have these on my ship since the voltages are super loving high and will kill you. They are what you need to rack breakers and to deal with high voltage and high energy electrical suits. They are not in most navy supply systems yet so they are a pain to get, and I assume since you are a radar rate you need them because of your weird high energy radar things. They get smelly if you have to use them frequently and have only a limited amount of washes before they are not usable because the protective layer is washed away, but it is around 1000 or so washes. The helmets tend to have plastic internal parts that crack if you have to use them frequently, the related plastic gloves have a bunch of 3M maintaince with them.. (yes this is part of my job why do you ask) The suits vary because an arc flash is just the arc between the conductors in question, while a blast is the "oh gently caress explosion" when metal decides to change phases from solid to liquid and then explode, and if your people don't have these suits on, there will not be enough of them for a casket funeral as they turn into literal plasma. If your people are heading to my class of carrier that might be why, since I know your end of the radar is a mysterious black box, we just provide power into it and then a mystery occurs.

They changed a bunch of the NSTM 300 back when I was electro and Ryand is right on point. There was a push to get electricians better coveralls for higher voltage arc flashes just in general for day to day use, but I'm not sure if that ever took off.

maffew buildings posted:What the gently caress is an ABE, I never know what you guys are talking about in here. loving just hit stuff with a hammer and never get promoted like me You see, the Navy has these things called ships and some of these ships have aircraft. Now, when they aren't getting upset at surface people, air people put on colored shirts and do someone directly above where we were working on the ship. They seemed to enjoy dragging chains around when people were trying to sleep at night (either in their staterooms -gently caress nobles- or while on watch). In conclusion, hang all brown shoes.

Are these voltages high enough for arcing to occur to the skin from connections? A whole suit for electrical safety seems bizarre when the rubber room is a thing.

If the insulation breaks down yes, but the arcs in high voltage applications can be high enough to jump across large rooms, but the suit is more for the hot burning gas cloud that is now heading towards your body, and the bright flash of the arc so you are not blinded.
