Just a reminder how extreme today's Republican party has become since the days of George W. Bush when it comes to Muslims.

http://www.vox.com/2015/9/22/9371313/republicans-islam-bush

quote:

On September 17, 2001, President George W. Bush gave a speech at the Islamic Center of Washington, DC, urging Americans not to fear Islam and to embrace Muslim-Americans as fellow citizens.

"When we think of Islam, we think of a faith that brings comfort to a billion people around the world," he said. "Some don't want to go about their ordinary daily routines because, by wearing cover, they're afraid they'll be intimidated. That should not and that will not stand in America."...

Bush, for all the disastrous problems with his "war on terror," made speech after speech stressing that America was not at war against Islam itself and indeed sought to embrace the religion and its adherents.

"The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam," Bush said in his September 17 address. "That's not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace."..

"America rejects bigotry. We reject every act of hatred against people of Arab background or Muslim faith," Bush said. "Every faith is practiced and protected here, because we are one country. Every immigrant can be fully and equally American because we're one country..."

I wonder if George W. Bush could even be elected in today's Republican environment

Going by that poll, then, I would guess Rubio as the most likely nominee.

Jeb can't beat Trump in a head-to-head.

Carson and Fiorina can, but have the odds against them for the same structural and institutional reasons as Trump, only minus his infinite money and showmanship.

Caveat: possible Kasich/Christie surges, Jeb experiences upswing in favorability, or polls this early turn out not to matter!

Considering that as of a little earlier this month you still thought Bush had a chance, and Trump is soundly thrashing Bush here, have you changed your mind about that or is there some unseen consistency to your claim? And why do those factors apply to Bush but not Trump in a way that this, specifically, is proof positive Trump can't win?

I'm not sure why there is all the hand-wringing about people in this forum "liking" Trump. I don't think many people in this forum genuinely LIKE Trump, it's just that most of us recognize that he is a terribly destructive force that exists within the Republican Party, a real piece of poo poo party that needs to change. In general, I think it's healthy for a "conservative" party to exist in a large nation like the United States... but the GOP ain't it-- they are simply obstructionists at the federal level.

The racism, xenophobia, and bigotry on full display within the GOP doesn't just exist in a vacuum. There will be consequences that I think will be on full display during the general election. Watching Trump is like watching the GOP shoot themselves in the foot with a pellet gun over, and over, and over, and over....

I still think Bush will be the nominee. You can't underestimate money, endorsements, almost the entire establishment support and the field organization that Bush has. Trump has none of that and his ceiling is 38% in head to head match-ups.

The reason the same rules don't apply to both candidates is that they are both very different candidates with different methods of support. Polls don't matter that much this far from the election.

Trump's high polling numbers mean virtually nothing right now as do Jeb's low polling numbers.

I tend to agree, though I'm less certain now than I was, say, a month or two ago. I mean seriously, I knew Jeb! was your standard boring GOP suit, but I would never have thought he was this bad at campaigning. As such, though he's still got establishment support firmly in his corner, I think there's a larger (though still not particularly large) chance that someone like, say, Rubio might be able to squeak out a primary upset on him.

If you live in a state that allows you to vote in both primaries it is your leftist duty to vote for the least worst republican candidate; Trump isn't afraid to bring up the fact that Planned Parenthood does more than abortions, supports nationalized healthcare, and is willing to bring up financially leftist stances in a way that appeals to low-information republican voters.
