Still wondering how Mineta got points to get into the Hero class. I guess he had a good poop that morning.

Kohei answered that in his character profile, if I recall. Basically he used his headgrapes to stuff up the cannons the robots were firing, rendering them inoperable and thus "Defeated."

Well, I'm not old enough to have seen it when it came out. I know it spawned 2 sequels; I was mostly just mentioning it because it has basically the same scene as last week's issue.

Back in my day, you could only get your japanimations at the import stores run by the weirdos subbing the originals with VHS tape machines. If you were lucky the blockbuster or rogers would have a small anime section composed of random episodes from Lodoss War, Evangelion, or some 18+ anime porno that somehow got mixed in with the rest. Kids these days with their crunchy roll and their fan-translation torrents

The best movie for "holy poo poo! How did they get away with that?" is Revenge of the Nerds. A movie where the heroes sneak into a house full of women to install hidden cameras and sell the pictures to everyone on campus. Then later just straight up rape a girl. It's basically a horror movie told as a comedy.

That's why I was asking if it's a cultural thing. That translation is awful, it's more of a rewrite than a translation. Don't assume that what they're saying represents the original text.

Mineta is Horikoshi's self-insert, which is kinda scary and also perplexing what with the general and well appreciated lack of over the top fanservice.

Mineta sort of is the fanservice vehicle though. Almost every girl in her underwear shot or tit/rear end grabbing has been done exclusively by him. Even the girls in bikinis were because him and the electricity dude set that up in the panel beforehand. Horikoshi also keeps the pinups of the girls to his twitter account sketches rather than put them in the comic. I think he's just really good at not letting it poison his comic like a lot of other manga artists do. Then again, poo poo like Nisekoi is on it's billionth chapter and considered one of the most popular comics right now so who knows really.

Mineta passing the initial exam doesn't bother me much for the reasons given, but the one thing I don't totally understand is why Midoriya got last place when they did all the physical exams. I mean, he was in pretty great shape and a bunch of his classmates' quirks seem like they would be completely useless for the sort of tests they were shown doing (like electricity guy or invisible girl).

I gotta think invisible girl was cheating like crazy. Why wait for the race to start to start along that 100 meter track?

I mean, he was in pretty great shape and a bunch of his classmates' quirks seem like they would be completely useless for the sort of tests they were shown doing (like electricity guy or invisible girl). He didn't know how to use his powers at the time. He was still in the stage where he could only use it once or twice and obliterate his limbs so he couldn't break his arm just to get the grip test done, then run over to break both his legs in the first two steps for the 100m dash. Almost all his testing after admissions was just his limit as a human without a quirk with him only starting to grasp how to use his quirk right at the end with throwing the ball. The other thing is Midoriya wasn't a dude who was actively training or trying before All Might actually showed up to motivate or force him into it. Sure, he dreamt of being a superhero but it was in the same way otakus in their 30's dream of waking up in a fantasy land as an overpowered hot dude with a harem. There was no effort beyond the bare minimum which was being a quirk otaku. He is basically going into this with 6-10 months of training from All Might and a quirk he got the day of the entrance exam versus everybody else who probably spent highschool (or their life in Iida and Todoroki's case) working out their limits and pushing them. Even Naruto put in more effort than Midoriya at the beginning of his story despite his circumstances.

It's been implied several times (and once even outright stated) that UA's examination system is fundamentally flawed. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that problem extends to other areas, such as how physicals are judged. EDIT: I also agree that Deku's got about a year's worth of training at best, going up against people who've largely been preparing their whole lives.

Horrible Smutbeast posted:Even Naruto put in more effort than Midoriya at the beginning of his story despite his circumstances. That's because Naruto is like, ninja-jesus or something and as such instinctively knew his ninja way. Deku thinks it was hopeless to be a quirkless superhero because honestly how can you compete? Definitely not with Bakugou. He was living constantly in the shadow of a born and destined high class superhero who constantly looked down on him, can't fault him for not trying. It's like if a schlubby 16 year old started getting into track when his contemporaries were all running sub-4 minute miles since they were 11 or something.

Rigged Death Trap posted:That's because Naruto is like, ninja-jesus or something and as such instinctively knew his ninja way. Naw, Naruto spent his life up until his ninja-jesus days as an outcast that couldn't do anything right and was hated by everyone. But he kept trying through his failures even when the story began and he thought he wouldn't amount to anything (or ninja-hitler). Deku hasn't even put in a fraction of that effort or dedication. Unless he magically got a super powerful quirk he was content with never trying to move forward from his childhood obsession, even when he lives in a country where the vast majority of people aren't even allowed to use their quirks in public/daily life. Nothing would be stopping him from applying himself to be in logistics or police work so he could support heroes. Instead, as a quirkless, his only goal in life was to apply to superhero school because he was still clinging to the hope that one day his super awesome amazing quirk would manifest and turn him into Mini-Might. That was literally his whole goal in life. It doesn't make him a "terrible" character or the story bad, but Deku was probably one of the laziest and most delusional of the cast. A better example would be a schlubby kid never going for a run because he wasn't going to magically qualify for the Olympics. And then Usain Bolt shows up, personally coaches him full time and uses his superpowers to turn Midoriya into a Jamaican.

Deku was also shown studying superheroing like crazy and taking gigantic amounts of notes on every superhero he could, and this later translates into him being able to learn from other characters more easily, like picking up on Gran Torino's hints and copying Bakugou's style Naruto was shown learning how to turn into a hot girl to give his teacher a nosebleed, which is mostly used for gags because he's ninja-jesus

Anybody can nerd out about their obsession, it's the lowest amount of effort you can put in. Even the one chick, Blue Story, in the e/n forum makes notes about a tv show and votes for contestants on multiple email accounts in her spare time. Boiling water is too energy intensive for her but she still manages to do that. Actually doing something to turn that obsession into a career with buttloads of hard work or not have it consume your entire life is something average people manage and are expected to do everyday. Naruto was actually working hard to try to master the skills to graduate the first step of ninja school, even practicing all night in the woods to perfect the cloning technique enough to pass. Yeah, he had latent superpowers but those only awakened through hard work and trauma before the series went off the rails. Hot girl jutsu or whatever was just a dumb reoccurring gag.
