Honestly, if the Jeep is an attempt to echo THE LADDER boss fight then Skullface is an attempt to create an MGS villain more incompetent than Volgin.

yeah, the ladder masked no loads. It was just a silly, dramatic set piece to make Big Boss seem like a super manly dude who climbed a loving huge ladder while his theme song played.

And it worked. The Jeep Ride is a plot dump.

1) the ladder is extremely cool and good
2) peace walker is extremely uncool and bad
3) jeep ride is great right up until sins of the father kicks in. shoulda just moved the walk and talk speech to also be in the jeep ride or speed up the jeep by like 10%.

The hosed up part of the jeep ride isn't even the ride itself. It's the lead up with the entirety of OKB Zero and Baby Mantis and Skull Faces extreme close up and dramatic turn around and I'll show you my demon.

I was like daaaaammmmmmnnnn some crazy rear end poo poo is finally gonna happen. And then the jeep ride is one sided and kinda boring for the most part and it closes with Sins of the Father in order to generate....me laughing? It seemed poorly executed for something that could have been defining for the villain. Oh well. Still one of the best games I ever played!

I think the ladder was also there to give you a sense of scale for this giant loving mountain you have to get to the top of as quickly as possible.

I got back into W101 after not having it be my first Platinum game anymore, but I just genuinely don't care for Peace Walker. A good portion of the story reeked of Kojima regretting his decision to kill off The Boss so he had every character talk about her constantly and even revived her as an AI. I enjoy Mother Base in Phantom Pain because I can generally just set and forget things but there's a lot more to manage in Peace Walker and it dumps you back there after every single mission. I generally like to play MGS as close to no kills/no alerts as possible but that all fell apart once I started hitting the extremely boring bosses. Tank, tank, robot tank, helicopter. Wow exciting.

It's a game obviously made for the PSP and a lot of the design choices with regards to mission structure and level design make sense... but that doesn't mean I think that makes it a good game.

What is so great about PW taken alongside the rest of the series?

MGS3 does all the gameplay better. You can't even belly crawl and the PSP origins mean levels are generally tiny and boring. TPP does all the mother base stuff better. Letting Kaz auto-manage big chunks makes it much less of a pain, the interface is a lot better, and the things you actually develop are usable in a fun gameplay environment. People complain about the Side Ops being repetitive in TPP, but if you wanted to 100% PW you would have to beat essentially the same 3 bosses like 40 times in the same room.

The only box I'd tick on PW over other games is that it has Hayter's final full performance and it's apparently the last game to have MGS goofiness levels like the pooyan and date missions which TPP is sadly lacking. But that's about 1/100th of the game. I really was excited about PW after everyone saying it's the best MGS ever but I just sort of scratched my head, like this is it? 1=3 > 2=5 > 4 >>>>>> PW.

e: I'm not surprised that there are no actual counterarguments beyond "you suck at games" and "opinions wrongman"... yeah, let's complain about a 2-minute truck ride then gush about how amazingly fun PW's vehicle battles were

e2: I used the auto-assign option in PW, I just don't remember it being a passive thing and you had to go press it every so often

Why does everyone think I'm going to get in trouble?

So I take it you guys who didn't like base management in PW never realized there was an auto assign option? As for returning to base, that's a conscious decision you make after every mission or extra op. You're given the choice to either return to base, which is the default option, or go back to the mission select screen.

This is not an uncommon sentiment. Ignoring the fact that the initial release was borderline unplayable with it's camera angles, it controls extremely poorly and menu swapping for camo, healing and items is not fun and tedious. It's a bad game with a really, really good story and a ton of charm.

It's possible I missed it. It's hard for me to say. Last time I tried to play it was when the HD collection came out and was really put off by the flow of gameplay, so my distaste may have colored my perception. I still don't think it's particularly fun to play and ended up quitting once I hit the helicopter boss. Within the last year I finally ended up watching an LP of it and thought the story was pretty mediocre.

Why does everyone think I'm going to get in trouble?

You don't really need to constantly micromanage your camos, you can do just fine with Tiger Stripe everywhere. Stamina, I'll give you as kind of tedious, but it's not hard to keep a stock of Calorie Mates and Ramen. The original camera is a moot point since Subsistence fixed that. The controls are probably more a victim of the legacy of MGS1 controls, more than anything else really. I honestly think they play fine, but they're definitely pretty dated compared to everything in the series after it (except PoOps).

Peace Walker does play pretty poorly though, especially the initial release, which came out on a platform that has 1 less stick than controlling a metal gear game requires.

The bolded statement is some serious hyperbole on crazy levels. For the most part, the fixed camera angles are fine but as Subsistence showed, it wasn't the ideal way to present the game. The game is still eminently playable and fantastic in MGS 3 camera mode.

If you'd never played MGS 2 and MGS 3 at their release, playing them for the first time now would suck because the controls absolutely are garbage by 2015 standards. I can go back and play them just fine because I know how to, but I would hate to try it without that know how.

If you're swapping your camo, items, healing up or eating so often to make it "not fun" and "tedious", you're making the game much harder on yourself than it needs to be. Tiger Stripe camo will serve you well on basically every terrain on the game, other than during The Boss, where you'll stick out like a sore thumb.

Even better, in the HD version, you get the DPM camo that you had to top score on Extreme Mode Boss Battle modes in MGS 3 Snake Eater (EU only) from the get-go and that thing is essentially a cheat camo. You only have to change your camo less than 10 times as a whole in the game even if you're being free and easy with the changes. The stamina thing is the biggest deal but just eat your noodles and calorie mates when you're low instead of snacking all the time.

Sticking out like a sore thumb in The Boss's fight is a good thing too because the best way to do that fight is to make her charge your rear end.

- the level design actually feels thought out and works as a "start here and sneak to the objective" straight line deal

- building mother base actually feels significant

- the story is neat. people can't be trusted to actually launch a retaliation nuke, make a robot that autonukes a nuker, haha actually i fed it fake norad launch data, PEACE WALKER'S GONNA LAUCH A NUKE, this is Big Boss don't fire a nuke, how can i trust you, i didn't shake your hand :madmax:

- ghost hunting

- pooyan

Peace Walker was fun and good but MGSV crushes it in every way that matters.

MGS3 is still the best game in the series and calling its original 2004 release "borderline unplayable" using 2015 standards is unbelievably stupid.

Heaven's Divide is seriously good too and it also plays at a moment that doesn't really fit it, just like Sins of the Father.

Heaven's Divide should be in the Peace Walker fight. Sins of the Father should have been during Shining Lights, Even in Death.
