Driving through this area on Monday, I thought I smelled something odd. Apparently I wasn't the only one:

WaPo posted:

Dan Schmidt, a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department spokesman, said authorities first received reports of a strong gas odor in the 6300 block of Multiplex Drive around 12:05 p.m. Monday.

The department’s hazmat unit found gasoline in multiple areas, including a dry creek bed, a sewer line and a nearby retention pond, according to a fire department press release.

By 6 p.m. Tuesday, Schmidt said officials from Colonial Pipeline had pinpointed the general area of the leak, but have still not located the source.

Cleanup seems to involve what look to be septic tank vacuum trucks. Except these have shiny red hazard diamonds.

Make sure you see the recently remastered blu-ray version. I saw a 35mm version where apparently half an hour had been cut from the subplots and things re-shifted so it made utterly no sense beyond "they haul a truck through a jungle" which was highlighted by the fantastic bridge scene.

A 40 watt laser engraver system is generally about $10k or so. He gets one from China that costs about $500. The build quality is a bit :stare:.

The laser tube is marketed as a 40W but most people agree it's really more like 32W. Water lines and high voltage wires are run through non-grommetted sheet metal holes. The extremely thin glass tube is clamped in place by some sheet metal. I was lucky enough to get rubber bands around my tube here, some other people have gotten newspaper ones.

CSST inspector Mylène Lauzière-Sevigny posted:

CSST inspector Mylène Lauzière-Sevigny says workers were trying to lift a lamp post, with the help of a truck, when it came into contact with a Hydro-Québec line carrying 25,000 volts.

She says when companies are doing work close to a line, they must call Hydro-Québec and ask for it to be shut off.

"They were really close to the electric line. It's 25,000 volts. You cannot get closer than three metres. If you need to get closer than 3 metres, you need to contact Hydro-Québec," Lauzière-Sevigny said.

A spokesperson for the utility said it didn't receive such a request at that location. "It's a tragic situation," Marie-Élaine Deveault said.

I live in a large victorian house built in 1880 with gas lighting. There are literally gas pipes in every single room. Currently disconnected... I hope.

It's perfectly safe, the strong odorant they add to the gas means that you'll smell it long before it reaches an explosive concentration.
