I heard them say that they put built internals into it. And the kicker at the end- they had to dial the power down from what it dyno'd at for the drag races becase of clutch issues!

With diesels it's not just turning the engine over (which it likely would have with just the boost), if it's cold enough out the cylinder compression won't get the air hot enough to ignite the fuel when it's injected; the engine won't start no matter how long you crank it. E: Basically that video is just a really extreme, low-tech block glow plug.

Yeah it''s perfectly reasonable up until he blows up the batteries with the welder. In all the time it took to get that fire going he could have just warmed and charged them but that wouldn't be as much fun, right?

In all the time it took to get that fire going he could have just warmed and charged them but that wouldn't be as much fun, right? The problem is that at those extreme temperatures the oil is basically solid and essentially glues everything in place. Even with fresh, strong batteries there is basically no chance that they would have been able to start that motor. And again, since the oil is basically solid, there is no lubrication provided either once you do get it going. This sort of thing is something we covered in great detail in my training as a commercial pilot; how to get an old radial aircraft engine, cold-soaked overnight in the Arctic, to start and run. The first trick is to never let it get into that situation in the first place; what you do is right after you shut down for the day, you drain the engine oil out of the tanks while it's still hot, then keep it warm overnight on what amounts to an oversized camp stove. Second, you remove the battery and keep it warm as well. Finally, you blanket the engine and props to try and retain as much heat as possible, and to trap as much heat from the smudge pots that you (or more likely the mechanic riding along) are going to light and watch overnight. The next morning, you refill the oil tanks and put the battery back in the aircraft, then remove the blankets. In the cockpit, the aircrew will activate the oil dilution system, which essentially pumps raw gasoline into the oil tank, reducing its viscosity and (hopefully) preventing it from freezing on contact with the cold engine. The props will be turned a few times by hand as usual, then a start will be attempted...you'd better get it right, because if it's minus 30 or below, you might only get one or two tries before the engine is too cold. If that happens, then you're building a fire under the engine to try and warm the thing, which might not be easy in the Arctic. As for turbine engines in this environment, all you do is pop the battery out, keep it warm overnight, then start the airplane as you would anywhere else.

Yeah, they posted a video of why they were not following the rules. I think the full rule list was something like 3500 lbs, 12" tire, leaf spring suspension, hellcat motor and trans, standard chassis (no tube frame), and the owner has to drive. They literally broke every rule.
