JKL, clients who don't understand the concept of "I own this file I've uploaded to the internet, therefor I can upload this to your server as well." don't deserve nice things. I've had to do files that way before and it blows up the work time exponentially. That said if the audio isn't bullshit with like eight people talking over each other at once I would do it but only for a very hefty increase in time allowance and pay. I think the problem is not being able to evaluate that before having to accept the job. But really, they own the file! It's their file! Just give me the file! It will take them longer to compress, upload and wait for processing on a streaming site than to just give you the file! Why are people so ridiculous.

Can anyone doing this car commercial for DT explain to me how this is a car commercial? Half an hour this guy has talked about everything but loving cars. While building sentences completely out of like and um. And chewing gum constantly!

No. I've only heard from the invoices email when I typed in something wrong. But how many have you sent in w/out getting paid? It should go, invoice on Saturday, check is sent out on Thursday, check arrives Mon/Tuesday.

Never have, and I think that's a problem. If you don't receive payment by the due date get in touch with them. They are helpful when you bring up an issue, but there's nobody double-checking anything to see "8bitlawd's been working for us for 4 weeks (or whatever) and hasn't submitted any invoices. Let's check up on that." They are not proactive about poo poo like that at all.

This and that 'family goes on a road trip' reality tv. Who the gently caress wants to watch that? I really, really don't want to be present for my own family road trips, let alone someone elses.

I hate it as a program, but it's the only thing that likes this set of AVI files and doesn't make them crackly as gently caress. So I have the same file loaded up through Express Scribe and Inqscribe. It is now currently playing in sync, it's like I don't even have to think about this poo poo at all and I can still have all of Inqscribe's sweet shortcuts and flexible word processor goodness. So, weird trick that works in case anyone ever needs it. For the record I threw these files into Wondershare to convert them and they spit back out crackly. They're even choppy when I tried playing them through VLC. For some reason they're perfectly smooth through ES.

Yup, I do. And it's even more of a shitshow than that: according to what they've said, you can get your account banned for navigating the site too quickly. You're not supposed to rack up more than a few "hits" every couple of minutes. Logging in, clicking on links, refreshing - they all count as hits. Bizarre.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're dying. WD is a front for black hat link selling, no one is buying their content, it's just going on the sites they set up to sell links from. Their business model has been outdated for a while and it's amazing it's worked as long as it has.

I used to write a decent amount of stuff for Writer's Domain but lately I feel like I never see anything anymore and the few things I do manage to grab are nitpicked to hell and back by their editors. So I've kind of given up on them. Reading the last few posts makes me glad I have. Zerys isn't providing much lately since one of their bigger clients went under a few months back, so for now I'm trying to sell stuff on Constant Content. I've figured out what makes CC's editors happy (write like you're talking to a ten year old, run everything through HemingwayApp first to double check this) but I kind of miss the more straight-forward ways of Zerys/WD.

I gave up on Writer's Domain when they started tossing back the rare articles I was able to get for small editing complaints they editors used to take care of themselves (disliking one specific comma, wanting linebreaks to be done differently, etc). It was just too irritating when there was never any way of knowing whether the next editor would toss it back for something completely different. Plus they stopped giving out more than three stars the instant those got tied to how much you got paid. But, man. When it was good, it was great. I haven't managed to make such easy money anywhere else.

Right now, I'm still making around $45 a day on Writer's Domain, so I hope they turn things around. For what it's worth, I don't know when you were last there, but I'd say right now about 80 or 90% of the articles I write get 4 or 5 stars (aka get a bonus). I'd probably still recommend it to people interested in writing for cash because the more eggs in different baskets, the better.

"A few clicks every couple minutes" is deliberately vague wording, probably to frighten people out of camping on the site for hours on end. The actual trigger could be a hundred, several hundred or even a few thousand clicks per minute, but good luck having anyone risk their account just to intentionally stress-test that. Things like this only remind me that I've been sucking on the content mill teat for too long. The moment you start seeing steady money is usually the moment when everything suddenly dries up. I should really start working on something a bit more...stable.

Since there are more writers than work, you don't get to pick and choose your topics so much; in the last few days, I've written some dental stuff, plumbing stuff, one about getting married in Las Vegas, a couple on propane... they're really all over the place. You definitely do not need to be a topic expert to write stuff although it might help you work faster. The fact that I'm at the computer for a large part of the day is what allows me to get that much work there. Unfortunately, it's not the kind of place where you can drop in whenever and get work; I'm checking for work periodically throughout the day while doing other stuff.

I don't know if there was more than one thread but at least one of them is this one. http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3466192 The self-published porn market is pretty saturated from what I can tell, but it also has an almost infinite range of bizarre poo poo you can get away with writing and selling, like the guy who wrote that "pounded in the butt by my own butt" series. Then again, I haven't tried it personally, so maybe the volume of frustrated moms buying it is large enough to support more authors.

Some of them actually did make a decent chunk of change just writing porn but the market is literally all based around Amazon which both does not like porn and made some changes to how the pay structure works so the market is now mostly romance novels with some pornographic elements. The current thread is an all-purpose self-publishing one down in Creative Convention. Shima Honnou fucked around with this message at 08:16 on Oct 8, 2015 |

Yeah, from what I've seen, that market's all based around either jumping on a trend at the right time -- gay werewolves were huge for a while, and then there were a million billionaire/BBW stories -- or finding a really demented niche that you can exploit. Amazon cracked down really hard on some things people were exploiting for big sales, like overly risque covers and content that ventured too far into creepytown, so it's a lot more reliant on actual writing talent these days. Romance is still a huge market, but there's a really huge set of arcane rules you have to follow when constructing the story and if you venture too far from the template the fans will eat you alive.

I don't do the smut thing but apparently it's possible to work around Amazon's crackdown, while still technically playing by the rules, if you're sneaky about it. I've seen a couple of really interesting blogs about that topic recently, this is one of them for anyone interested: http://lessonsinsmut.com/ (NSFW content, obviously) And yeah, apparently it does have a lot to do with following the trends. Example: Kinky billionaires being a huge thing after Fifty Shades of Grey, etc. Pikestaff fucked around with this message at 19:27 on Oct 8, 2015 |

I'm interested in text broker not just as a way to earn some extra bux but also to improve my writing skills. Writing professionally has long been something of a dream of mine but I never had a chance to learn any of the necessary skills in college. I can write things in a way that are buzz worthy and eye catching but I feel the quality of my thoughts clashes with the sloppiness of my delivery. I know my biggest problems with writing are my clumsy grammar, superfluous language, and redundancy. The latter two could be fixed by simply slowing down and maybe having someone proofread it, but grammar is a struggle. Looking at the website, I would like to be able to consistently write at the quality level of 4. Do you guys have any tips on staying at this level of quality? Can someone point me to some accessible and reliable resources for honing my grammar? I know I need help with clauses and pauses and commas and consistency between it all.

Textbroker relies entirely on the AP style guide, so you should read up on that. I had a lot of success with using Microsoft Word and cranking the grammar check settings up to maximum. Any other issues, the editors will happily and repeatedly point out. The trouble with Textbroker is that there's really not a ton of work available at the lower levels, so while in theory you can be promoted from 3 to 4, it's really hard. Be very careful, especially with your first five articles, to be as within the guidelines as possible. They provide some examples of writing at each quality level in their FAQ as well.

I recommend HemingwayApp for anyone doing writing; it's not perfect (since it's software and not a real human) but it's good for pointing out superfluous words and long sentences that can be reworked. I especially recommend it for Constant Content because their editors basically want you to write like you're writing for a room full of ten year olds. I used to get revision requests from them a lot but now that I run everything through Hemingway they pretty much approve anything I send to them.

I have, but not recently. Just let them know you're not receiving emails in case it is a technical problem, if you haven't already. Sometimes email services just don't play nice with each other. A while back my email suddenly decided all these emails from DT were spam and chucked them all in my spam folder because... ?

I remember the spam folder thing, that was effecting everything, or at least everything coming from Sally. This is weird because every other email comes in just fine, except for this one apparently, on the one two weeks ago. One time a few months ago I got an email with an assignment for someone with a name similar to mine, and confirmed it. No one realized until I went to turn it in and I noticed the name difference. Since the other guy never got the email or knew about it, I basically just got his job and did it and got paid for it.
