After finishing the latest Vinnyvania episode on Giant Bomb, I became kinda convinced that Vinny Carrevela could make a fine Kacho if they ever made an American GCCX. Dude's got charm.

That final episode of Castlevania III definitely had a hilarious amount GCCX parallels. A lot of Arino-level mistakes, doing dull and repetitive work because they had to grind for hearts before each boss attempt, an especially painful blunder followed by a face of complete defeat and putting on a cooling pad taking a long sip of water to cool down, a helper giving him advice on how to advance and beat the final boss, and them even going for teamplay strategy where one person calls out where the boss' attacks are coming from so that the other would know where to move (and which ultimately didn't work).

It even had the looming atmosphere of despair as their limited time passed with minimal progress, and it finished with a miracle victory right as their time and energy were at their limits and which they brought about by catching the boss in an attack pattern where it was unable to hit them back.

Sadly, I don't think Vinny would have either the time or the patience for GCCX-style marathon playing. He was kind of starting to crack there after a couple of hours, although to be fair that demonic music probably didn't help. I wouldn't be surprised if increasing the tempo of that track to make it more sanity-eroding (famicom version is way slower on top of sounding nicer) was yet another intentional dick move from the localizers. :v:

Are there any other examples of games justifying problems in their manuals? I wasn't allowed to have video games as a child so I didn't start playing games until the N64. I've heard tell of Doctor Robotnik's deadly speed traps.

It comes up occasionally, although the main thing I remember is the first psp grand theft auto game explaining two shortcomings with gta3 (where you play the same character in the same city, but as a gta3 prequel). Your oddly chunky character model in gta3 is explained by almost everyone you meet for a story mission saying you look scrawny and need to eat. The lack of motorcycles in gta3 (which are in the prequel) is explained on the radio via psa's and mayoral campaign promises to ban the motorcycle menace city-wide.

Why, yes, I do like Kirby games.
If someone does make an American knockoff of GCCX, I hope to god they don't get one of those braying, swearing jackasses you usually see playing in Youtube videos. Among a number of other reasons, GCCX works because Arino is so nice. Anyone know any nice middle-aged American comedians that could be tapped for a hypothetical project?

I remember reading that if you used a certain game genie code to beat Bowser In Super Mario Bros 3 you could get caught in a "time trap" that held you in place forever.

It was the "always <suit> Mario" code and the way to avoid it was to hold up while standing in front of the door on the right side of the screen.

Why do I remember this? Because when I was 4-5, I must've gotten there a dozen times only to have it permanently pause.

Got around to watching the Gradius episode, bit of a weird challenge considering they made it practically impossible for Arino to fail what with the second day and Takahashi doing 90% of the work for him. Guess they really wanted a win out of cardigan's final episode.

It's a strange concept, since it had to be clear from the start that there was no way Arino was clearing loving Gradius without some MAJOR help. If they really wanted a win, they probably should have looked into a different game.

I was kinda wondering that too, maybe Life Force (or Salamander over there) would have been a better choice since like in Contra, the konami code gets you 30 lives instead of powerups, and maybe more than once if you follow the arbitrary boss color system. Maybe they decided it would be better because they had continues and they didn't think he could beat Life Force with 30 lives, even with multiple attempts?

It was probably the continue system that did it. They really love giving him poo poo for loving up complex (and simple) continue codes.

At work today, the Konami code was the topic of discussion, and I correctly suggested Gradius used it first :krad:

The first episode I watched was the Bomberman DVD special, which I really liked for the competition vs. the staff at the end. You might also consider some of the quiz episodes for Arino interacting with staff in funny ways, or episodes that show Arino triumphing over tough games with a lot of staff support like the Ninja Gaiden or GnG games.

Paris-Dakar Rally Special would be my pick. It's a classic kusoge that's just strange enough to hit that "weird Japan" vibe, it's a game that Arino has trouble with, but not too much that it becomes overbearing, it has a wonderful continue fail, and it has the start of To Catch A Catch Copy, which is a great segment. While it's not really good in one particular way, it has a good mix that gives a good impression of what the series is about.

I'd say Battletoads as a good display of Arino's general platforming/action skill with certain games. Then maybe a puzzle/quiz game or something, like what was that one about child rearing. Maybe a two parter like SM64? To be honest, they all have Arino in them and his rapport with the ADs is always pretty funny, not to mention all the arcade visits and other segments.

But I'll always love Legend of the River King 2 just because of how loving chill it was
