EshOne has played Reconstrvct before, Prism has been on the billing before, other US artists I'm not remembering have played before; I mean I think that argument is bullshit too. Has Joe Nice ever given a poo poo where his dubplates are coming from? No, the music dictates what he cuts to vinyl and what he plays. It's not like he's strictly promoted US artists or any kind of poo poo like that, and Reconstrvct hasn't shied away from booking Americans. Really it comes down to Joe's ego and him having to put the event on blast through a VICE Media wing, announcing to the world he's no longer playing. Didn't even given Luke a heads up or speak about the issue, which speaks to me like some personal ego-hurt or whatever. And I disagreed with all his points/think they can be just seen as bullshit.

And yeeh always dig whatever J.Robinson is involved in.

I stand corrected haha. And yeah no use in taking sides. I'm still gonna listen to Joe on sub.fm and I'm still planning on hitting reconstrvct next year. Was a dick move of Joe to just hop over to vice and do that. I feel like all it did was give the scene more press which I think is good. Rather see an article about that than some bs about Jack U.

Also massive amount of mungos records on repress just hit redeye, so if you ever wanted a new copy of fire pon a dubplate now is your chance

On a contemporary speed garage tip I have not been able to get enough 90s Jeremy Sylvester lately. Unbelievably prescient - he was the exact bridge between Grant Nelson and Steve Gurley - introducing more abstracted sonic elements and 'ruffness' (for lack of a better word) to the garage template, with hints of the haunted, deep, dubbed-out sparseness of 2-step and dubstep to come. All while still retaining the color and playfulness of NY/NJ Garage. So much to prowl through, too. He was as prolific as Todd Terry, with as many aliases. Astounding quality control considering.

Where would you recommend starting with Jeremy Sylvester? Only track of his I know if 'Not a Perfect Love' but I loved it.

Fantastic OP btw, subscribed and fived.

Oh man, where to start with Jeremy Sylvester. Like has been mentioned the man had so many alias, and didn't really favour a particular one. And in truth many of the sounds so very similar (though I don't neccessary mean that as a criticism). So it makes it hard to tell exactly where to start. Some of my favourites though were when he took over the G.O.D. series from Grant Nelson.

Luckily (or unluckily depending on if you're a bit of a dick like me) a lot (most?) of Jeremy SYlvester's stuff is available to download. Off Juno Download at least, I've never bothered with the online Our Price that is Beatport or iTunes. I know he had a couple of packs he has re-released online just collecitng 20-25 tunes of his, so it might be worth picking them up. Nice'N'Ripe has put most of their stuff up their too, though I seem to remember they never bothered to label all their sublabels, just sticking it on under the NNR banner, which I guess'll be annoying when you're trying to find a particular one.

An excellent oral history of Dubstep on Vice, written by Lauren Martin.

I actually knew Lauren from back in the day, though she was more of a friend of friends thing. She was part of a small group of us who'd be there like clockwork every other week when the Fortified dances were on at the basement of Blackfriars in the back end of '06. Super fun times. I remember just skanking the gently caress out at the front of the dance floor when G had got Pokes to come up to do some MCing for one of the nights and getting a shout out from him. Proudest moment of my life!

The hardcore gigs she mentions were hardcore punk, sadly not hardcore rave or happy hardcore even. I knew many who did the punk thing way back when though it never floated my boat. I was way too interested in smoking and drinking way too much and listening to Detroit Techno and Grime and Broken and Jazz and Acid and whatever. Stuff where people didn't wear so much black or have as many piercings. Nothing of what I listened to though would compare to that first wave of Dubstep.

Anyway it's a fantastic article and hits pretty much all the key players. Nice mention too of BareFiles which so often gets left out of the conversation but it was a very important part of things at the time. Looking back you'd think Deapoh who ran BF would've just told Rinse to gently caress off, you're a pirate anyway and how much are you paying in PRS royalties. Though actually I think one of the reasons is Rinse had tried to do a bit of a hostile takeover of it, though don't quote me on that as I'm getting too old to remember every little detail that happened a decade ago.

Also interesting that it also mentions the smoking ban, which I've always said has had a massive (and I'll say negative) effect on UK club and dance culture. We felt it up here first as we got hit with it at least a year or so before it got enforced in England.

This song sound familiar to anybody? I think there's 3 MC's on it, the main dude is white and has a shaved head. Tried way too hard to find it and came up with nothing :(

The market for novelty slipmats is sadly underserviced nowadays. A real crime. Gone are the days where every half decent label had slipmats for sale (with matching bomber jacket and record bag to go with it!).

You can still pick up some Metalheadz logo mats at Juno, see what else they have. Though most of their selection is your generic banzai sunrise/weed/Union Jack motif. They used to have a cracking set of Especial Records Japan mats that'd I'd have loved. But at something ridiculus like £30 I didn't love them that much. Hmm, makes me wonder what else they've got over there. Disk Union website ahoy. UR must have some too surely, if you're that way inclined.

Anyway first Dubstep 12" I've bought in years, first Deep Medi record I've bought in years, is the new Jack Sparrow. Triumphant return after the Challenger-esque disaster that was the end of the whole Black Box/Chemical Records thing. Me likey. Juno and all other good record shops.

It's the same with a lot of that third/fourth generation or whatever sound I guess. You get folk growing up listening to it, the edges get rounded off, borders are set etc etc. Eventually you just start chasing your tail. Same thing as happened to Jungle, Garage whatever.

The earlier stuff of K-Mans wasn't pushing any boundaries, so I guess we shouldn't expect miracles this time. Put it next to the Jack Sparrow release and just no comparison. Though a bit unfair to compare I guess since you've got someone who's been active in the scene, DJing and producing since pretty early days (I remember him and Forensics I think it was coming up here to DJ during one of the early Fortified nights at Blackfriars, so second half of '06).

But yeah you'd think Mala would reach a bit further, but then he's the worldwide DJ so what do I know? Mind you remember Doc Scott actually apologised years ago for playing utter shite. So even the big boys can't be perfect, though maybe it'll take a bit of hindsight. Or maybe I'm just being a boring old fart who just can't get it anymore.

The big thing for me about it all was that K man already has a release that sounds exactly like this one. Just wanna hear some diversity from the guy, see what other stuff he does. On the flip side though Deep Medi is releasing an LP with Kahn, Commodo and Gantz on it. Probably going to be release of the year at this rate.

Gonna do a link bomb right now of cool UK bass stuff that came out recently:
Good to see butterz finally release this

Epoch put this out recently and it's got some real good vocals on A with breaks n poo poo. B is on some brooding late night walk stuff.

I forget which one of the new 130 guys runs Mystry but they've been putting out some real good stuff.

The hodge EP was also really good
https://soundcloud.com/kemal187/bh-013-hodge-you-better-lie-down?in=kemal187/sets/bh-013-hodge-you-better-lie

I could probably post way more but I'll just leave it at that. So anyone else been getting into the 130 tempo nod to dubstep stuff? Definitely way better than weightless grime.

I remeber buying War Dub when it was new! When they put out that Tectonic Plates series that was just raah! Total super heavyweight business.

Anyway, for those of you old enough to remember the old Silver Dollar Circle blog (those things we had to use before Twitter and the like), the guy who used to run it has been ripping his tapes of old Grime radio shows and putting them up on Soundcloud. But Butterz is doing a 4 for 10 pounds deal, one of their releases plus 3 others from different labels, ending midnight tonight (and almost gone):

Last time (years back) I got some Earth 616 stuff, another Mood Swings VIP white, and I think an old Oil Gang release (pre-Boxed stuff)- definitely recommended (and a great way to start collecting grime)

Yeah I love it when Butterz do these deals. Can't remember what I got last time, but this time I ended up with the Shotta remix EP and that TQD single on Butterz, the Spare EP on Coyote and a Dusk & Blackdown single on Keysound. They even threw in an extra bonus too, the Jahovia 7", the E.M.M.A. and Rebel MC thing. So it's a win I think! Well worth picking up the deal if you've not already!
