Turn off auto back skate and use LT when you want to actually backskate. Also keep in mind that if you need to turn 180°, it's usually faster to stop and go rather than make a big sweeping arc.

No. Be prepared to spend 75% of your time gently breathing on the control sticks to fruitlessly attempt to continue facing the puck.

Spoiler, you'll spin around away from it when you actually need to do something and the inevitable goal will be your fault.

Also, since I know there was nextgen console purchase chatte, the game is undeniably smoother overall on Xbone, from menus to saving/loading to gameplay.

Good men must not obey the laws too well
Having skipped the franchise for the better part of the decade, it's pleasing that super cheesy goals don't seem to work that well anymore, but I've seen way too many "guy who isn't even facing the net blindly flings a backhand from the slot at 90mph past the goalie" type goals playing online. Really hoping they knock that success rate down in an upcoming tuner.

Might be the worst issue about any online play other than the goalie sliding the puck slowly out in front of net that can't be intercepted in any meaningful way, mentioned earlier.

I'm enjoying the part where the AI defense leaves a forward standing in the slot all by himself and lets the other forward pass it to him for the one-timer. And when they inevitably score, of course the coach yells at me.

This happens almost any time my BAP RW steps onto the ice. It's incredibly frustrating and I've dashboarded many times after being down 3-0 in my first 3 shifts.

That's how it's always been with this game. AI defenders always break their coverage at the most unfortunate events and wander somewhere. They don't have a concept of playing area and man defense at the same time. Online vs games consist mostly of circling in the corner waiting for this opportunity to open for easy onetimer goals. And playing only as Blackhawks of course.

You can try that but in this game sooner or later you're going to end up with your back turned on him because the skating engine is not made for defending and the simplest task of keeping your front on puck is a thing that requires incredible control.

worst thing about the game is AI defenseman logic on the breakout. They love skating from behind the net to the post and occasionally put the puck in the net themselves.

Every once in a while my centre in HUT will just fully skate into me when I'm bringing the puck up from behind the net, with hilarious result.

I'm liking HUT as an alternative to online VS, you still play ludicrous all-star teams on the reg but it's trivial to build a decent enough squad after a few games that you don't feel overmatched. People also seem less likely to quit on you if you go up 3-1 in the 2nd. Plus you're guaranteed to not be playing against two guys constantly trying to set up the same play for 15 minutes as the Blackhawks.

Helps a lot if you pre-ordered and get a pack a week though.

HUT looked like a bit of a mess in NHL 14 cause it just seemed like the P2W guys would steamroll me forever, so I ignored it and made a BAP kid who got sent back to minors forever for no identifiable reason, the end.

It's really frustrating to play someone's million-puck/hundred-dollar team of Crosby/Getzlaf/Perry/Weber/Burns/Rinne etc, yeah. Beating them with top two centres Brock Nelson and Nazem Kadri is really satisfying though.

The best thing about the P2W guys is they tend to be kinda lovely at actually playing the game. When you get into the higher Divs and find the guys who can really play it's a bit of a nightmare.

I stopped playing with my 86 average team after I made first division last year. Though the game also sucked bad so it was really easy decision. I lucked out Doughty from one of the free packs was hell bent on conquering the whole league with him but it turned out that having Doughty or having Wisniewsky didn't have much difference in the game.

Cool. I'll sign up tonight and then you'll have an awful, terrible, no-good very bad goalie.

By the way, the solution to the down-low-to-slot-onetimer is to squeeze both triggers and jam the right stick in the direction you want to go. You'll do a ten-foot butterfly-slide out of the crease and land right in front of the forward. The solution to that solution is for the centre to drop it back and have the other winger put it into the now empty net :sigh:

I only seem to encounter the Canadiens. Though I did play the Bruins once and got mauled. They're essentially the size of a football team, and the guy had them set on neutral zone trap (of course he did) and even any chip through I managed to get resulted in TJ Oshie being sacrificed live on the ice.

how is that possible in this game?

AI breakout logic is poo poo in general whether it's vs or EASHL. EASHL they get trapped behind the net all day. Both vs and EASHL AI players constantly skate into traffic, or skate right ahead of you.

Pleads and I played 5 games of our annual super series and I realized how loving broken the AI and game is. The AI is as bad as ever, actually worse for the reasons noted imo. The only difference is they've hosed with passing so much that you can't capitalize on it as frequently.

Don't even get me started on defensive positioning good lord. In you end, anything below the circles is an invitation for both ai defensemen to follow you to the corner as the center. The ai regularly does that in eashl too though, the LD going to clear the RD's corner. Or the AI d cannot figure out how to cover if the forward hangs on his off wing a little higher in the slot.

Forechecking being vastly improved due to poke checking 'physics' is the one true positive I can say about this game. Whatever ground gained there is negated by the fact that skates constantly don't pick up the puck even when no one is near them.
