Chaffetz is in.

quote:

In a lengthy interview with POLITICO in his Capitol Hill office this weekend, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee predicted that opposition from conservatives will block McCarthy from securing the 218 votes he needs to be elected [as Speaker] on the House floor later this month – and so Chaffetz is pitching himself as an alternative.

“There are very few people who can win the support of our hardcore conservatives and yet be palatable to our more moderate members,” he said. “The question is who can help unite the party and bridge the divide and I hope they see me as the person that will give everyone a fair shake.”

Until now, McCarthy faced only token opposition in Florida Rep. Daniel Webster; Chaffetz, by contrast, is the head of a major committee and a respected figure among the rank-and-file. At the very least, the Utah Republican’s last-minute entry complicates McCarthy’s path and highlights the uneasiness with which the centrist Californian is viewed among the most conservative members of the GOP conference.

"Jet fuel can't melt steel beams" is a phrase used to mock conspiracy theorists. It originates from the film Loose Change, a widely panned film that asserts the U.S. government was behind the September 11th attacks. Though the filmmakers consider the strength of steel to be evidence supporting their allegations, they fail to recognize that jet fuel, while it cannot melt steel beams, does weaken it.

In this context, mlmp08 is implying that anyone who thinks the U.S. government intentionally targeted hospitals is a conspiracy theorist who lacks any wide understanding of the situation. Just as "jet fuel can't melt steel beams" demonstrates a poor understanding of building design, so too does this allegation demonstrate a poor understanding of U.S. foreign policy.

This has been an introduction to Internet slang and popular culture.

This probably isn't the right place for this post anymore but once upon a time there was some discussion of a theoretical app that would assist GOTV [Get Out The Vote] canvassers.

Does anyone remember what the requested features of this app were? If so, what's the most essential feature?

I don't remember a particular GOTV public app but both campaigns in 2012 had apps with similar goals. The DNC's worked a LOT better than the RNCs. I think it was called ORCA? I'll look it up

If I remember too, ORCA had been contracted out while Narwhal and its predecessor had been built internally by OFA volunteers and members. It really contrasted how hosed the GOP is when it comes to tech

Thanks! The discussion of this potential app was based around the app that the DNC GOTV folks were using. The issue is that, unfortunately, the problem with a lot of state and local DNC organizations won't or don't work together or share resources and information.

So, the idea is that something open source could be made, thrown up on VPS hosting, and made available to DNC groups. However, I don't remember what kind of information was supposed to be made available through this app or how to get it - voter rolls I think...

Yeah, I think one of the bigger criticisms of OFA is how little they've integrated their structure into the DNC. I understand that something like OFA is rare but why they didn't work to develop this on a state or district level, I won't know.

Oh wait. That requires the DNC to try and win in 50 states. It will be a long time before I forgive for getting rid of Dean and the 50 State strategy.

The U.S. hasn't finished the investigation yet, but ABC says an anonymous official claims there was an AC-130 in the area, firing on Taliban fighters who were engaged with U.S. Special Forces. If that's the case, immediate self-defense more or less supersedes any protection the hospital would normally receive under LOAC.

Also, depending on who at the embassy was called and who was dropping the bombs, 30 minutes is not long at all. The embassy doesn't have a direct line to tactical aircraft.

:10bux: says that this will be the official conclusion reached by a relatively low-key investigation waaaay before the Benghazi one even shows signs of tiring itself out.

They'll keep that one running up through the election if they can help it.

Hillary will be getting sworn in on one day, coming in to testify on the next.

It's really angering to know that they'll be beating the Benghazi drum long after everyone's forgotten this. Because this is a legitimate issue to take up with the military and the Executive branch (and Obama's Executive branch at that), but the Right won't go near that line of thought because it doesn't compute with their kneejerk military adulation.

It was super weird to see the Right jump to defend NSA spying and paint Snowden as a Russian terrorist when the fact that it was happening under the Obama presidency could fit so many freepers' paranoid narratives to a T.

Except I've seen government buildings on TV and they're loving sweet. Super high tech command center where everyone is dressed incredibly sexily and are all loving slammin' (each other, amiright). There's a ton of glass everywhere and all the doors open automatically and make that cool hissing sound when they open. There's usually an elevated office with frosted glass or something where the head guy stands leering out over everyone while he pontificates on his labyrinthian plans, spinning his spiders web. In season 2 he'll turn out to be a traitor but in season 4 it'll turn out he was just deep under cover. Anyway, those guys have their poo poo together and are up to all kinds of wacky poo poo, how is that not indicative of reality?

In true GOP Glorious Omniscient Job Creator Alphamans fashion, Romney's tech advisor oversold the drat app's abilities to the tune of the giant pot of money handed over to develop it.

Field people were, like, emailed the login credentials the day of, their maps were outdated (and caused a bunch of folks to like hit up the same homes), and I'm pretty sure the thing wasn't redirecting network traffic correctly. It was well into the afternoon before it was half-useful, so they gave the Dems a several-hour running start.

It's a completely textbook example of how the Republican is full of poo poo.
