Well the really dumb part is that a solid gold bar would actually be just as useless. What, you're going to trade one bar for those g five cans of beans the other guy has? The better idea it's buying a poo poo ton of cheap, pretty jewelry - but that doesn't fit the preppers vision of themselves or the post apocalypse

I work for the government and live in rural Arizona, so I know quite a few of them. Here's my two favorites: Prepper A built his own bunker and literally has over 1 million rounds of ammunition stored. When ammo was really pricey thanks to people like him, a friend and I tried to buy some from him so we could go to the range, and he refused to sell any of it, because he swore he might need it. He also believed that there were secret Chinese military brigades just qcross the border and that the facility he works at would be used as a FEMA prison camp. Prepper B built his own house out of sandbags, and was working on becoming entirely self-sufficient so he could quit his job. He was very proud of his composting toilet and had surrounded his property with hedgerows and boulders so that the government couldn't raid his property easily. He had buried bug out bags with food, guns and ammunition around his property as well, and had stored over two years worth of food. This was all second hand information, as I never saw any of it because he doesn't allow anyone to know where he lives. He also rarely showered and believed that soap and deoderant cause body odor. He was also surprised when his prepper girlfriend said gently caress this lifestyle and moved to Phoenix. Just wanted to share, thanks for listening.

Whenever I read about these preppers I can't help but think that most of them are going to die in their bunkers surrounded by stacks of ammo from some preventable disease or infection because septic pads and antibiotics aren't glamorous enough for them. If you plan on using 1 million rounds of ammo for "self-defends" you're probably just going to get shot before you come anywhere close to running out. I also can't help but think they don't exactly have a balanced stockpile of food. I wonder if some of them would catch goiter or scurvy.
