exquisite tea posted:Star Citizen looks pretty hosed but to those who are like "Elite: Dangerous is so much better already" what's the appeal of it, really? I loaded up a few gameplay videos and it just seems like for the most part you're doing MMO fetch quests in mostly empty space, whizzing right by points of interest while trying to control your lovely starter ship, and taking five minutes to jump anywhere. All the while you can't actually land on planets yet and all you have to look at are slightly differentiated skyboxes. This is the dream game for some people? This is what people want to spend the rest of their waking lives doing? All valid points regarding ED. The difference is though they started small and are building from there. And unlike some games they're not letting their ambition get the best of them.

It's definitely nothing worth bragging about but their milestone was to recreate a modern Elite, which I think they totally nailed. The game drops you in the middle of its dense forest of systems and doesn't care about you. Which is what makes it my kind of game. My opinion is that Elite isn't for everyone. Compared to what SC dreams about, Elite is a harsh reality of game development. I really think what they've delivered is what is completely possible within the past 3 years.

If escapist get more people willing to come forward, CIG are even more sunk than they already are. Even the phrase quoted "don't want the stress of meeting CR's standards" is a giveaway that there is probably yelling (and more) is going on. So if I really liked Frontier / Frontier: First Encounters back in the day, and ever felt like I wanted to space truck farming machines and computer parts until I could afford a fun ship, that would be for me? I almost gave Braben money when the kickstarter was running since his presentation was very sound, but they did not need my money and was not sure I actually wanted to be a space trucker again. Never gave CR anything either, but that was never a consideration at all.

Yes. Elite lacks any sort of Newtonian physics like Frontier had, but other than that it's same old. No planetary landings yet, but that's coming soonish and it's getting better slowly.

You can do that but you won't buy a fun ship, you'll buy a ship that does pretty much the same thing the last one did but with bigger numbers. It's a very pretty screensaver and I enjoy it when listening to podcasts. But once you get into the rhythm there is not much game there. Exception: There's a dedicated PvP mode now that I haven't tried out, but word is it's awesome.

DS backed Star Citizen but came to the same conclusion goons did 2 years ago. He called out croberts in a series of big spergy blogs. Escapist found some people willing to dump poo poo on croberts and ran an article that came to the same conclusion that goons did 2 years ago. Croberts wrote a big crazy thing tying in every type of internet attention whore. Since then every internet attention whore has been putting in their 2 cents on the issue. Goons have been laughing all the way to the laugh bank over the whole issue.

Note, in Star Citizen parlance "troubled users who we'd rather not have interacting with the community" are people who asks the questions "where is my loving game?" and "where the gently caress did my money go?". They're more than happy to have people who's "interaction with the community" includes sexually harassing other members, that's fine.

Extremely late and just kind of a tangential doubt but doesn't the US have anti defamation laws that still are valid even when being truthful? In my country, if something is considered private information you can still be sued for defamation, regardless of truth. Like an ex-lover saying her ex-partner has a very small penis - defamation regardless of size of actual penis. I really just wanted to talk about penises.

The US does but this wouldn't really fall into the category under current law. Cig would have to prove that the statements in question were knowingly false when printed and that it was intended as malice. With all statements having been referred to as allegations and all sources vetted their pretty much covered via US law.

Slander and libel both requiere what is being said to be false, and even then if the figure is public and its a media source the one doing the claim then it needs to have malicious intent or disregard for the truth.
