If you have a pretty large collection that you want to pare down somewhat, where do you really start?

Right now, not counting basic lands, I have almost 27k cards.

I know I can cut all the basics I have down by just keeping art I like for each one and get rid of all the rest of them, leaving me with 100 or so of each in reserve.

I really want to winnow out all the cards that aren't playable in any format at all, but don't want to bulk out cards that are used in decks I don't have yet. I may never complete those decks, but I don't want to have to reacquire the playables after selling them off.

STRAIGHT TROPIN'

If they didn't want players to play four colors then why did they print a high-power wedge set full of high-power wedge cards, then print a manabase that's insanely strong but only works with wedges if you add a fourth color?

If the manabase were literally anything except "ally-only fetches for ally-only typed duals", Abzan probably would stay three colors.

As per the thread's recommendation I'm going to pick up the Clash starter deck: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MTG-Magic-Origins-Clash-Pack-Armed-And-Dangerous-INSTOCK-/301717491190?hash=item463fc38df6

Typically my friend and I alternate purchases on new games, so I buy this and he buys something to expand it. Is there a typical expansion route from the clash pack? Or does one just start down the road of blister packs?

Well they're also thinking toward the future and in 6 months the mana is going to look waaaay different without fetches.

Generally once you have a starter product or two you just start opening packs and modifying your existing decks, or eventually making new decks from scratch. Something like the Deck Builder's Toolkit could work as an "intermediate" product, but you won't need it unless you want to build new decks and find yourself running out of usable cards. The most pressing need will be for new basic lands, and you can just buy a pile of them.

If you do start buying packs, the best thing you can do to get value out of them is to play limited, where you intentionally ignore your entire existing cardpool (except perhaps for basic lands) and play only with the cards you just opened. The most typical limited format is an 8-man booster draft, but there are 2-player variants, like Winston Drafts, Solomon Drafts, and Winchester Drafts.

There are regular releases of duel decks and clash packs, but the reality is that the progression from a clash pack is to buying cards to move toward specific goals. It's a universally agreed upon thing in this thread that if you want to get certain cards you should just buy the singles you want instead of opening sealed packs hoping to win the lottery. That said, if you want to open packs for the experience of opening random cards that you can use to move in whatever direction they take you, go for it.

If you really like the game, you might consider giving a Friday Night Magic draft a shot. You don't have to bring any cards, get to open packs and keep the cards you draft, and play with those cards. It's really fun, I draft almost every week (I just thought about how much this costs me, and wow that's a bit scary. Cube time?).

That's a lovely deal on lands. Honestly, if you can find it for a less than $150, split a duel deck anthology. I imagine it makes one hell of a starter set.

Does Rhino play hardened scales? because I cannot see a 4 color deck cutting 8 cards to make a conditional combo work.

I just want to throw it out there that there is nothing to show that dedicated 4-color/5-color decks are going to take over the meta. They can be powerful, but I think this last SCG Open showed that consistency is still the most important factor since the general power level of every deck (outside maybe Esper Dragons) has dropped significantly with rotation.

Yeah - seriously. Please don't buy lottery-ticket boosters to get specific cards. If you want to open boosters, start drafting. First, you're going to get a chance to do more than just pay $3-$4 to rip open a pack and then toss most of the cards into a shoebox - you'll actually play with them. Second, you're technically opening 24 boosters in an 8-person draft pod - you're going to see a lot more cards. Third, by playing the cards and seeing the cards you will get better at the game overall. You'll stumble on neat interactions and be forced to come up with creative ways to solve problems as they hit the board.

Speaking of which, I want to pick up one or two of each of the Khans fetches for my Commander and Tiny Leaders decks, is now a good time to do so, or should I wait some until rotation? Ebay says I can get a full playset of all 10 for about $400, is that a reasonable deal or should I see if I can get a better deal individually?

If that eBay deal is legit, that's a great deal, depending on the condition of the cards.

Your paying 10 bucks a pop for your fetches. Going of TCG low (never go off mid). Windswept is about 11 right now. Bloodstained is 14. Flooded Strand is 18 dollars. Wooded Foothills is 15. Polluted Delta is 20. If they are giving you a playset of the Zendikar fetches, then that is an insane deal. Your still saving some just with Khans fetches.

Having seen the deal he's talking about. The condition is listed, and they have the little hologram so they probably aren't the new fakes that are super hard to tell. It's 420 though. Still it's about a 30 to 50 percent savings.
