If time were allowed to pass in this comic, that might be a possibility. But in reality, the current Phantom will always be the Phantom and his kids will always be teenagers.

So has the phantom never been replaced in the comic's history?

Well, the classic Phantom strips I post are from the 40's and it's the same Phantom we have now. You can see him in today's strip rescuing the same Diana he will eventually marry and have those ratty twins with.

Nope. Time was allowed to pass just enough to let him get married and for his two kids to grow to be teenagers, and that's it. His history is constantly being retconned so that he can stay current with technology and society (like how Diana now works for the UN or whatever instead of being an aviatrix adventuress or whatever she used to be, and how the skull cave now has broadband).

It's always been a major irritation to me that a comic with a built-in way to replace the protagonist has never actually made use of it. We should probably be on the 24th Phantom by now, but no matter how much it extends the lifespans of previous Phantoms it's just going to be the 21st until the comic eventually ends.

Has Gabriella completed her transformation into a white woman, or is that Bobbie Merrill for some reason?
And I doubt the colorists actually follow the strip when they often color things specifically referred to as a color a different one.

It's amazing how the most consistently good comic right now is Dick Tracy, and it's even full of weird crossovers with a defunct comic.

How the heck did this happen? Before the new writer and artist joined, Dick Tracy was garbage, and the Phantom was the good comic.
