How about a picture of a real freedom fighter?

Osceola (1804-1838), aka Billy Powell, was born a Red Stick Creek in modern Alabama, in a village of mixed Scots-Irish, Native American and African American descent on the frontier of white settlement. When he was ten years old his family fled in the wake of their confederation's defeat by US forces under Andrew Jackson to Spanish Florida. There they joined the Seminoles, a confederation composed of Creek emigrants to Florida in the 18th century and freed or escaped slaves from Anglo Georgia and Spanish Florida. He was still a boy during the First Seminole War, when Jackson took his mixture of Federal regular infantry, thousands of redneck volunteers, and platoons of auxiliary Native American scouts into Florida as part of his self-devised campaign to win the peninsula from Spain. By the time the Second War came in the 1830s he was grown to a formidable leader of hunters and warriors, who spoke fervently against the federal government's efforts to transport the Seminoles west of the Mississippi. He struck one of the first blows of the war by leading the small band that assassinated the federal agent to the Seminoles in a hail of gunfire outside a coastal fort, before leading a contingent in the Seminole forces that routed an expedition of Federal and volunteer American troops attempting to cross the Withlacoochee River near modern Tampa.

Though he did not survive the war, he was not defeated in battle. He was instead ambushed and arrested under a flag of truce when he entered an American fort outside St. Augustine in 1837, on an American invitation to negotiate peace terms. He died in confinement the next year, but the Second Seminole war took the lives of a tenth of the federal army's officer corps, at least 1,500 regular troops, and unknown thousands of American militiamen. The biggest killer by far in the war was Florida herself, whose beasts, climate and diseases took at least twice as many American lives as Seminole weapons. All this to remove less than 5000 people from the inland reservation they were relegated to after the First War. And it didn't even succeed entirely. Though the majority of the Seminoles surrendered to American forces in the early 1840s and submitted to transportation west, some held out deep in the Everglades. A Third Seminole War in the late 1850s did this surviving community considerable damage, but it too failed to entirely remove the Seminoles. The surviving Florida Seminoles did not receive full tribal recognition until the early 20th century but they remain and thrive in the Tampa area today, where they own a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino that my grandfather plays craps in most weekdays.

Should Obama declare state of emergency for Chicago over gun violence?

Since the first of the year, nearly 2,400 people have been shot -- more than 350 killed.

Gonzalo Guerrero

Enslaved by Mayans in 1511. He got so well on with his captors that he married a Mayan woman and decided to fight against the conquistadors. When fellow captive Gerónimo de Aguilar asked Guerrero to join him when Aguilar was freed Guerrero answered:
Brother Aguilar; I am married and have three children, and they look on me as a cacique (lord) here, and captain in time of war. My face is tattooed and my ears are pierced. What would the Spaniards say about me if they saw me like this? Go and God's blessing be with you, for you have seen how handsome these children of mine are. Please give me some of those beads you have brought to give to them and I will tell them that my brothers have sent them from my own country.
In 1536 Pedro de Alvarado attacked a village named Ticamaya and after the battle Guerrero's body was found.
