Peanut3141 posted:I don't think it'll take a terrorist attack to get a Republican in the presidential office. It might be <50% likely, but it's not a remote possibility. I could see such a thing happening under a Trump, Carson or Fiorina presidency, the top three polling candidates at the moment. They are, but they're not necessarily the three Republican candidates most likely to win a general election, and the positions any Republican candidate is taking now don't necessarily correspond to what they'd do in office. If an establishment (or establishment/legacy-minded) Republican candidate wins office the very last thing they'd want is a Peter King analogue publicly embarrassing them by holding extensive anti-Muslim committee hearings, and once in power they don't need to engage in that sort of bullshit to appease the base. Benghazi is a partisan fishing trip that lets them rile up the base and try to dig up dirt on and impute scandal to their political opponents, but it's largely ignorable political nonsense that doesn't have a real impact on anyone outside Washington and isn't followed by people who aren't political junkies. Extensive House hearings on subversive behavior by average citizens who are religious and racial minorities is something else entirely, and not something that I think would be well received by the public at large (along with most religious leaders, business, important foreign allies, etc.). The only way I see that sort of thing happening is the election of a president whose support is substantially predicated on pandering to nativist sentiment (and who buys into him/herself) combined with events that work to substantially drive public opinion in that direction. So if Trump wins the election over Hillary after we lose Tuscon to the nuke assembled in a radicalized mosque of Mexican Muslims then all bets are off, but otherwise I just am not seeing it happen. It's kind of cool that Hillary has a decent sense of humor. The recent SNL appearance was pretty good, all things considered.

Anyone ever think one of the first things Obama should have done when he became President, and still had a supermajority in the Senate, was push for a bill creating Election Day as a federal holiday? There's a really good chance it would have passed, as Democrats know that if election day was a holiday it would benefit them more than Republicans. And it might have even caused Democrats to lose fewer seats during the past few years.

So apparently a lot of gun talk is going on, but I was hoping someone had some thoughts on what's going to happen regarding the next Speaker? Anyone here have any credible-seeming projections? Entire thing seems like a poo poo-show and the person with the remote in the house just watches Fox. And even they seem to be half-admitting it's a shitshow.

On NPR this morning, it sounds like it's basically the Republicans crossing their fingers and hoping REAL hard that Paul Ryan will change his mind (which he probably wont), and otherwise it'll just be Boehner stuck in the position for a while

And even they seem to be half-admitting it's a shitshow. There seems to be some talk about Paul Ryan being a compromise candidate, but he's reportedly demanded near unanimous support from the party to agree to run. The Freedom Caucus has suggested he may be acceptable, which presumably helps boost his candidacy, but are still officially backing Webster at the moment. It's unclear if they're withholding outright support in favor of getting promises to meet their ten demands (they probably are). If so, Ryan could end up refusing a draft and the Republicans are truly stuck. Furthermore, the farthest right political commentators are trying to outright throw him under the bus for backing amnesty in the past, but no actual House members have expressed this view, to my knowledge, so it's not clear that this will derail a bid. All we know is that Ryan has yet to issue a Sherman statement so don't count out a Ryan Speakership until he reiterates his refusal.
