10,000 YEARS WASN'T ENOUGH LURKING
So Michigan has objectively some of the worst roads in the country. Seriously, the road to and from Detroit Metro Airport looks like it belongs in some third world poo poo hole.

Our legislature's solution was to have the people of Michigan vote on an increase in the sales/gas tax to pay for road repairs. It was rejected by an overwhelming margin. The general message to Lansing was "do your f***ing job".

Let's see how its going:

For the current atmosphere? That's just stupid.

Say what you want about Nixon as a paranoid, diseased crook; and Reagan and Goldwater as racist, senior ideologues; but each of the three of them actually understood that politics is done by politicians making deals and compromises and coming together where they could. Nixon created the EPA and the Southern Strategy. Reagan bloated our military and helped reform the tax code and raise taxes. Goldwater voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and was instrumental in passing the Panama Canal Treaty.

Our current era of "the only compromise we accept is 100% of what we want" comes straight from the right-wing media machine of the '90's through today.

"Government is not the solution to our problem. Government is the problem."

Remember the things the tea party wants and refuses to compromise over are effectively a series of measures to shut down the government one way or another. Reagan is the godfather of today's political climate, though perhaps not its tactics.

A flat tax on gas basically takes the money for fixing the roads right out of the pockets of the middle and lower-middle class. I want the roads fixed, bad, but I wasn't voting for that.

Yeah, same.

They tried to sweeten it by bringing back the EITC but that wasn't enough to justify my vote. I'm glad that a lot of the people I know were fussing about "why can't businesses pay more, it's the drat semis tearing up the roads".

Hillary won the debate, not by a huge margin but she dismissed some of the issues that have dogged her and made a good case for her candidacy. While Bernie also did well, he really didn't provide the outstanding performance he needed to overcome Clinton dominance. I will, however, be interested in seeing if Bernie gains any minority supporters from his statements tonight.

Then there was the clownshow in the background.

Have you ever seen someone who's fumble-loving up so bad that you are so embarrassed for them you just want it to be over so you don't have to see them fumble-loving up anymore? That was him every single time he spoke; I was just mumbling "shutupshutp" and wishing he could get off camera and not get called on again. Was he aware there was a debate tonight, or did he get told about it an hour before the cameras came on? :iiam:

It looks like "enough with the drat emails" is going to be the takeaway line in the media covering the debate, so that may give him a visibility boost.
