well if Sander's goal for the debate was to gain visibility then people going "well who IS this crazy grandpa, he sounds interesting" is a good metric.

Clinton gave the kind of performance you'd expect given her history. Very much the calm, practiced delivery of acceptably "centrist" answers and applause lines, in control of her presence almost the entire time. The few times she wasn't were interesting, but not the "flub" kind of interesting that the press cares about (mainly I'm thinking of her unsuccessfully trying to jump in a few times, her staring daggers in the beginning, and the few flat denials when people tried to engage her where she didn't want/plan to)

Webb was god awful. I was actually pulling for him because I thought his anti-hawk position would be good to air out but he tossed that over the side and then just gave a horrible performance.

Chaffee was bad but no worse than most of the GOP right up until that answer, my god that was terrible. Just holy cow.

O'Malley wasn't great but still better than most of the Republican field, really stressed "in my state I did" with about everything; also worth noting that if you subscribe to the idea he is running for a cabinet position then he did very well.

Sanders gave, for what little the subjective statement this is is worth, a very authentic performance. His style of dress for the evening and body language came across as un-polished as Clinton (or O'Malley if you want a better analog) were polished, which I suspect was a deliberate choice to serve as a contrast (which would make is very polished when you think about it). If there had been as many eyeballs on this as the GOP or an insurgent at >30% should get it could have been a breakthrough, but as it wasn't either of those the bar for breakthrough was higher and he didn't clear it. Like Clinton, very on-message and delivered his applause lines well. Also gave the line that will probably be repeated the most both sides of the press both in covering the debate and the emails. He is going to be in for a while longer

I still would have liked Lessig up there, as he couldn't have been any worse than Webb and more focus on the corruption of power going on now is always good.

Does anyone else think that Hillary skidded and burnt out in the final words of the debate when speaking after Bernie?

All she had to do is say that money was a corrupt influence in politics, just make one non-vague reference to any issue, and she failed to do so.

Bernie Sanders rocked it. I'm interested to see what happens to his campaign after tonight.

I think all that's really gonna come out of this debate is Sanders saying "enough with the drat emails" and Chafee charging right on ahead with the emails anyway, leading to:
Anderson Cooper: "Secretary Clinton do you want to respond?"

Hillary Clinton: "No.":vince:

It's the sequel of "Please Proceed, Governor".

I wouldn't say she burnt out, but her performance in the later half of the debate, including her closing statement, were definitely indicative of her ultimately milquetoast positions in comparison to Sanders. I was still impressed by how polished she was (no poo poo, she's a national politician who's done this for years), but Sanders is also definitely going to be around for quite a bit longer and that makes me really happy. :kimchi:

Went to a Bernie debate watch and every one there hated Clinton. No one knew who O'malley was at the being but by the end he was the second favorite.
Chafee had a good start but then turned embarrassing during the second round.
Webb got some praise but was generally boring. He is much to war hawkish as well for a Dem.

The timing legitimately wasn't fair, for anyone. Hillary definitely wanted to talk more than the others (which is good), but she didn't really have a choice either. Sanders same.

Pretty much everyone saw in that debate what they wanted to see. Both Clinton and Sanders gave decent performances.

Webb bitching in the debate about not getting enough speaking time came across to me as kinda whiny. I mean we've got 3 candidates who are lucky when a poll comes out with 5 points between them combined. The idea that they should get 60% of the speaking time at the debate seems wrong. Now I'm not suggesting they should go 60/35/2/2/1 in their time division, but if Webb or Chafee or O'Malley get half as much speaking time as Clinton or Sanders I don't think that's unreasonable. They should still be given an opportunity to make a splash and get noticed, but equal time is a dumb rule.
