I'm just glad the VA finally gave me a new doctor after two complaints to the local VA patient advocate and one to the regional one over the last year. My new doctor is a woman, but actually has more availability than any other doctor at the VA. They made a point to ask if I was ok with a female doc as if that's the major reason that she doesn't have a ton of patients. I hope that's the reason and that she's not a lovely doctor.

My point is that it spreads unneeded "haha yeah gently caress the VA man!" From bandwagoners who are still loving active duty. Then you have dumb entitled disgruntled vets stomping through the VA with a chip on their shoulder giving everyone poo poo then surprised at how they are treated. Look the system is overcrowded and needs to be revamped. We all know this. But I've come to find that a lot of the staff genuinely do care and go out of their way to help. They do all that they can within the means they're provided. Yelling at the clerk because my appointment is too far out isn't going to get me anywhere. I found that being polite and patient to VA staff (and people in general) is a breath of fresh air for them and they go out of their way to help you even more, news at 11. Rather than some old grizzly vet making a scene because he showed up without an appointment and they can't see him. It sucks getting paid late or overpaid but I don't live paycheck to paycheck like a poor because I'm not paying $60k tuition or still paying off that Chrysler 300 on 22s I bought while in, so it's nice to just get lump sums of cash then go on a Gucci shopping spree. This GI Bill is more than I could have ever imagined and then some. But "rawr I earned it11!!!!" Nostalgia4Dogges fucked around with this message at 17:43 on Oct 14, 2015 |

Rather than some old grizzly vet making a scene because he showed up without an appointment and they can't see him. gently caress people who can't handle bureaucratic red-tape without turning into huge loving babies. That said the VA is a serious shitshow, with massive divergences in quality from region to region. That the head of the OIF/OEF program at the New Orleans VA center filled out the entirety of my initial claims paperwork incorrectly and sort of just left me out to hang with a hosed up packet is, in my mind atleast, a serious deficiency. Also not everyone that gets out is single with no kids and no alimony to pay. The fact that clerical errors or simple laziness can result in months of delays with the approval or distribution of benefits can lead to pretty dire situations depending on what your finances look like. I'm not excusing the generally awful decision that most veterans have made with regards to their lives, but just because the program works as intended for you doesn't mean that the complaints about how hosed the system is aren't legitimate. Lastly there is no level of "uneeded" criticism of the VA. It is a broken system, that was predicted to be insufficient to handle the needs of veterans involved in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, is pretty loving inexcusable. Particularly with the amount of "hero" worship that takes place. If you receive poor treatment from an institution that is recognizably underfunded while horrific examples of pork-spending abound then you should be pissed about it. Obviously taking your frustrations out on an individual clerk is not constructive but seriously, gently caress the VA.

Well I mean I'm sure it's a highly regional thing. Where I used to live I went to a nice new VA branch clinic that was pretty much just a regular Doctors office with a couple more perks like mental health and such. It was quite nice I'm sorry if I came off the wrong way I guess I'm just saying people need to direct their anger and frustrations to the higher level management and maybe actually try to change something. Not just the general staff who can't fix the fact that they have no money or appointments and then go and postshit on Facebook about how terrible it all is. Sparing the details I will just say that I've used the VA for quite a lot of things (and haven't been out long) and aside from some long waits for appointments it has been an overall pleasurable experience. My primary care is constantly looking into all my needs and sending me reminders for lab work, appointments, etc. It's 100% free for me at this time, medications and all, which I think is a sweet gig. I guess a lot of people joined from HS and had their parents healthcare plan before that so they never had to deal with insurance companies and all that bullshit. Long story short I had a terrible injury long ago which needed a second surgery and my insurance dropped me for a "preexisting medical condition." I guess since I was never blown up and shot at I don't feel as deserving. All I'm saying is it has saved me a lot of money, there's an ER close, and I can call and make an appointment and get it within the week if not sooner. I like it.
