That was me. I'm from Norway and that cartoon actually made me kinda angry. This is the response I got:
Thanks very much for your thoughtful email. Yes, I can understand how many people (and I've heard back from some folks) who are offended by the cartoon. I suppose, in some way, I am blaming the victim a bit by drawing the contrast between the Vikings of old with the people of Norway today. I cannot understand why the security guard on the island was unarmed. It surprises me that there doesn't seem to be much outrage about the incident coming from the people of Norway. All I've seen in the American press are people crying (which is very reasonable) and lots of flowers and candles being placed on the ground. The story that set my mind to work on the cartoon was a statement by your leaders showing conviction about not losing the welcoming and peaceful image of the nation. I think Mr. Breivik should be tried as a war criminal like we tried Nazi murders after WWll. We have many people in the U.S. who still will not recognize civilized people are at war with terrorists...Muslim and secular. The only people our liberals can call a terrorists here are people who are in the conservative Tea Party movement. The attached cartoon is directed at our own Attorney General, Eric Holder who insists we need to give Muslim Jihadists, we are holding here, a very public trial (a stage to the world that your Mr. Breivik would like) with all the rights that citizens have in this country. I'm against that. I think our judicial systems are soft and fuzzy which places more innocent people at risk. I recognize we may have different world views but my hope is that people of all nations stiffen their spines and stand up against those who target innocent people to win power. Thanks again for your email. You write very well. Best wishes. Chuck

Here's the thing: he didn't exactly build a clock. What he did was take the parts of a working clock and move them into a pencil case. He didn't so much "build a clock" as "repackage a clock." Anyone pointing that out is - technically - correct.

That fact doesn't make the school's actions reasonable, nor does it really mean Ahmed isn't "really" a tinkerer. He did something very simple, and taking apart a piece of electronics and repackaging them in a new case such that they all still work isn't an unreasonable goal for a 14 year old who likes playing with electronics. It's not "I built a clock with a breadboard" but it is a step on the way there.

Just double-checking: Is this actually confirmed anywhere, or was this one of those conservative memes that started being taken for fact? Because I could believe either, but the only place I've seen it claimed is a facebook post by some guy who claimed it was a repackaged countdown timer, which, obviously, made it a bomb.

Not sure about an official confirmation but the MIT theoretical astrophysicist that reached out to Ahmed knows the details of his clock and doesn't give a poo poo that it's not 100% uniquely his invention.

Barry Deutsch just reposted this old cartoon on street harassment he did:

The story behind what happened afterwards is even more interesting, tho:

quote:

This is the only cartoon I've ever lost a job because of! A middle school in Beaverton, Oregon had me scheduled to speak to their students (I talk at schools in connection to my other job, as a maker of graphic novels for kids).

But they cancelled at the last minute after the principal found this cartoon online and was horrified (they told me) by the language used. And since this cartoon has never been sold to a paying venue, economically speaking, this is the least successful cartoon I've ever done.

Nonetheless, it's one of the cartoons I'm proudest of. I think it just works very well: the art holds up very well (and is more creative in approach than most of my political cartoons), and I really like the point it's making.

All of the street harassment quotes in this cartoon are taken from actual things women have had yelled at them on the street - either from reports I've read online, or from incidents that female friends have told me about.

In the "cartoonist successfully got away with being lazy" category, I like the way that I totally gave the impression that she's riding a bike in panel 6, without actually having to go through the difficult process of drawing a bike. :-p

It's been pretty well confirmed to the point where someone tracked down the exact model number of clock of the original. Also Googling that let me discover that Ahmed Mohamed is in the news again. I'm just going to post the original Washington Post headline so that we can all be prepared for the next wave of cartoons: The American boy arrested for making a clock meets Sudan’s president, an accused war criminal

I still think it's fair for Ahmed to call his clock an invention. No, it's not as technically impressive as "building his own clock" but honestly building a clock isn't that hard anyway. Basically:

Improbable Lobster posted:

Is exactly correct. No, he didn't literally make a clock, but he should still be encouraged for what he did do.

Because, is it possible, that maybe, just maybe, this was actually a hoax bomb? A silly prank that was taken the wrong way? That the media then ran with, and everyone else got carried away? Maybe there wasn’t even any racial or religious bias on the parts of the teachers and police.

but it seems like he or a reader did find the right clock.
