If argentina had to play the last 20 minutes with 14 men...no they would have lost

Penalty alone for that idiotic clear out was actually probably the right call. I've seen much worse not even receive the penalty.

Ireland had a brief period where if they'd just played for territory instead of points they'd have had a real chance because Argentina could not stop infringing/making mistakes, but in the end they just couldn't create anything - both of Ireland's scores came from opportunistic and predatory play by one player. The backline was too flat, the drift defense missed too often and the ball in/throw hands play was slow. None of that is down to Garces.

He wrapped his left arm round his own man. You might have missed it, and it was a derisory effort, but under the laws of the game, he did exactly the minimum necessary.

Yeah, he had his arm out and bound onto his teammate. He was clever/stupid enough to do it a fraction of a second after smashing into the Irish player.

If it was any other player on the pitch though it would've been a yellow. You can see the panic in Garces face when he sees it, he just doesn't have the balls to produce the second yellow and send the man off.

I kind of agree with that. If it was a first yellow for the player, it probably would have been given. But, given the lack of cards for charging into rucks in the tournament and the fact he bound onto his player (albeit late), it wouldn't be a certainty. Given that the player was already on a yellow, there was no chance Garces was giving a second for it.

Sure he doesn't, but you heard the TMO give him an out by saying he used an arm. The second he says that it goes from being an easy decision to a really grey area - if he gives the card he's just as likely to get castigated for it as he is if he doesn't, the difference is the rules protect him if he doesn't.

It's one of those calls that looks really obvious if you're an Ireland supporter but as a neutral or from the perspective of Argentina it's far from clear cut. I agree it would've been a harsh red but when you're already on a yellow and you're throwing yourself into rucks head first then throwing punches after it you really can't complain if the referee sends you packing.

It would've been nice to get the quarter final curse off our backs but this team was going nowhere. Joe isn't the genius he seemed at the start and I can see people growing weary off his overly cautious approach. The team looks so lethargic going forward and in defence, it's like they were waiting for games to come to them instead of taking the initiative and playing bold rugby. I'm not surprised that approach didn't cut it at the highest level but the intensity of the Argentina team from 1-23 and the energy and physicality of it should really show Joe his way isn't always best.

Communist Bear

He played Leinster as exactly that though - an overly cautious conservative approach that basically did enough to win but that was it. Leinster specialised in closing down the game to crippllingly boring levels, but as soon as any team tried anything different or get in their face Leinster fell to bits.

I'm not surprised that Ireland are now suffering from similar issues. Joe is a good coach, but he's too hesitant in approach.

I think that's a certain amount of 20:20 hindsight, if Ireland have Sexton, O'Connell and the rest this is a very different game. Ireland mostly failed on panic and decision making, which is exactly what you'd expect when you're missing your captain and star 10

It looked for a while that we'd be fine but it looks more and more like you're right. O'Connell not so sure but Sexton definitely, simply because Madigan bottled it so badly.

Yeah it is the luxury of looking back and picking holes in the approach, they were missing leaders today and didn't stick to the script at times, Argentina dictated the pace of the game and the tactical kicking game that Sexton brings wasn't there.

Really disappointing.

No, that's completely wrong. Leinster were playing better rugby than any other team in Europe when Joe was the coach. Their offloading game was second to none. The problem is he hasn't got Ireland playing like that.

Northern Hemisphere rugby needs a complete overhaul.
