Is there a flowchart that can tell me if a given car is a wagon, hatch, shooting brake, breadvan, 5-door, or crossover? I can't keep track of all this.

It's all intuition buddy. You just know this stuff after a while. I mean, some classifications have regulatory designations for import and insurance purposes, but other than that, it mostly comes down to what everyone else calls it.

Wagon/Estate: saloon hatchback with a long roof. Usually a 5 door but could be a three door, see: european escort mk4 3 door estate, which I wouldn't call a shooting break. Hatch: when you open the boot/trunk you can touch back headrests, sloped back and or very small boot, see: Citroen c1, hatchback not Breadvan. Shooting break: coupe with a long roof. Usually 2 or 2+2 seat configuration I think. Breadvan: Back of car is roughly at a right angle to the ground, 3 door. Longish roof, unlike the Citroen c1. See, polo Breadvan. 5 door: Hatchback or estate. Crossover: Car with big wheels and maybe higher ground clearance. Sportback: Wagon with a short boot, but more space and less sloped roof than the hatchback version. ....I think. I'm positive once many years ago I saw the Lotec C1000 based off Mercedes at a car dealership in Seattle. I looked it up once and apparently it was a one off for some Sultan or another and quite frankly I only believe it was actually real because that's such a loving no chance in hell name to accidentally misremember.
