Thing is, nobody knows why it happened, which is why it's so amazing. But the best guess is that it was supposed to confuse the defense and that they were never supposed to actually snap the ball. It was supposed to be some sort of trick punt play, except the guy snapping the ball snapped it early and the guy acting as the qb panicked and went to the ground. In theory he might have tried to throw it over to the other side for a big screen run but it's baffling from all angles. Oh, and those guys on the other side of the field were not lined up with the snapper so they got a penalty as well.

  Michigan (blue and gold) was beating their in-state rival, Michigan State (green and white) 23-21 and simply needed to punt the ball down field to end the game as there were only a few seconds left on the game clock. The ball was snapped low, the punter panicked and tried to still kick it away (he should have just fallen on it), fumbled the ball directly into Michigan State's hands, and they ran it back for a touchdown as time expired, winning them the game 27-23.

Some things never change It was a blocked field goal and they didn't score on the play, it just ended the game. Glorious either way. To this day they're the second most popular team in East Lansing. When I was moving into my undergrad in rural Ohio my dad pointed out a guy in an App State hoodie and shouted "That guy's my hero!" This was three years after the game. Dude just had a friend who went there.
