quote:noun | sub·ter·fuge | \ˈsəb-tər-ˌfyüj\ What is this game all about? Subterfuge is a week-long game of strategy and diplomacy, in which you will attempt to be the first to mine 200 units of the rare Subterfuge is heavily inspired by the browser game Neptune’s Pride, and has been developed by Ron Carmel (co-developer of World of Goo) and Noel Llopis (developer of Flower Garden). Wait. A week? Are you serious? I am! Subterfuge is a slow burner - don’t go in expecting to download it, jump into a game and start betraying your friends in a few minutes, or even in the same afternoon. The game is specifically designed around a slower timescale in order to allow for deeply strategic play without putting unreasonable demands on your time; read more about the developers’ commitment to respecting your time here. That said, I find Subterfuge easily the most intense game I’ve played on iOS, and at times I’ve spent over half an hour tweaking my orders to try to account for every possible eventuality. Give it a chance and it might surprise you. How does it actually play? There’s two main elements to gameplay in Subterfuge. On the map screen, you’ll command your army of drillers by launching them in subs from an outpost you own towards another one - either yours, or somebody else’s. Once launched, subs can’t (usually) be recalled or have their course changed; subs also take several hours to reach their destination, so you’ll want to be sure before you commit to an order. Fortunately, you can scrub forwards and backwards in time to see how your order will ultimately play out, and every order has a ten-minute grace period in which it can be freely altered or cancelled. Combat is entirely deterministic, so the victor in each battle is decided by who has the most drillers rather than the roll of a die. But that’s not all! Periodically you will also be able to hire Specialists with unique abilities that can assist you in various ways. Some Specialists have a passive ability that takes effect as soon as they’re hired, while others will need to be loaded onto a sub and taken into combat. The Specialists you’re able to hire is random, and how to parlay the Specialists available to you into a winning strategy is one of the key things to learn in order to win. The second, arguably more important element of the game is the in-game chat. The Subterfuge map is quite small and you’ll be competing with your neighbours for available outposts straight away. You’ll need to make friends with some of them to survive, but you’ll have to make enemies of others to expand. Betraying a loyal ally might make the difference between victory and defeat. Put all of this together and you end up with a game where attacks, counter-attacks, troop movements and special abilities are all present and interacting simultaneously, and all of which require consideration before you make your next move. Does this kind of thing look exciting to you? I hope so! If you want to get an even better look into how Subterfuge plays before you dive in, you can watch a ‘live’ game being played in out a series of daily video posts on the dev blog. Day 0 of the series is here. This video also does a great job of introducing the mechanics of the game as well as the twisty mind tricks it will play on you: Go RV! posted:Cool Ghosts (Matt Lees/Quintin Smith) have started a diary series of their Subterfuge game. They were all excited during last week's podcast about the game, and during this week's they were all burnt, sad husks of men. I have a feeling it's gonna be a fun watch What else should I know?
Subterfuge is available right now on iOS and on Andriod! TACD fucked around with this message at 17:54 on Oct 21, 2015 |

One dude (Heat) pissed off basically everyone else in the game off by immediately attacking at least half of the other players, so I'm in a peaceful place with about all of the other players since we are dealing with his attacks. And I assume they are counter attacking. He hit me hard, I didn't lose anything but drillers but it was a ton of them. I'm liking the promoted inspector (security chief, I think?) he adds another layer of shields to all of my outposts, and yet another layer wherever he is hanging out. I captured someone's queen when they immediately forfeited at the start of the game. I was hoping to get a princess out of the deal, but it didn't happen. I guess I need a diplomat to turn her? I dunno. It's fun. Siri is my XO. I have her send me reminders when things are happening so I can immediately adjust when events happen. E: oh yeah, I'm in as cender. L1 only so I can't do multiple games till some paychecks start rolling in.

In as Trinexx if you happen to see me around. There are several goons games going at the moment so I can imagine the cycle in this thread will be fairly slow to start up new games. With that being said I paid the 10bux (and I'm currently only in one game) and can create a new private one if there is enough folks interested Also fun tip: Whenever you are planning out what moves to make I'd suggest hitting the time machine a one tic into the future while doing so. I think that other players can see your tentative subs that haven't officially launched yet if they happen to be online. This is useful if, for instance, the ally that you're intending to back-stab sees you sizing up an attack. ^^ Yeah for capturing other peoples specialists for the most part you only take them as a hostage and have an option to release them as part of a trade later on. The Diplomat only works for captured specialists that are owned by you. You can really only take someone else's if you happen to have a Hypnotist, use a Double Agent, or use a Pirate to steal a gift in progress. When you give an order, press the 'skip to arrival' button - if it doesn't do anything the order isn't logged on the server yet.

I'm still on my first game and I'm trying the turtle/be a diplomat approach. It seems to be working so far but I'm struggling to generate enough drillers to open up mines. It's also hard to figure out how to attack enemy outposts - by the time my sub gets to an enemy outpost, chances are they'll send reinforcements to it. I'm seeing this all over our game, where people are sending 3-4 subs to one enemy outpost while the defender does the same, and nothing changes.

I haven't attacked yet but either coordinate with an ally and attack from two fronts so they can't back up their own outposts as thoroughly, or just wait till somebody else launches an attack without you and ride their coat tails in for the big win. If you can see where their reinforcements are probably gonna come from, wait till you see them go committed so they don't have as much to reinforce against you with. Again, haven't done this yet but I'm keeping an eye open for opportunities. Do princesses come up as specialist hires as well? I'm the only guy, I believe, who snagged someone else's queen but now I see somebody else floating a sub with a princess in it. I thought they only came from converting an enemy queen.

Thats kinda the point, you have to commit major amounts of drillers to steal a defended node. You can(and pretty much have to) use the fast forward tool to see things like - how long will it take for your opponent to send back up from each of their nodes - how fast you can get there/if you have a dude that makes you go faster etc etc etc.

Let's talk about the King for a second. The King is promoted from a Hypnotist. All of your bases get -20 max shield charge, but every combat, for every 3 drillers you have post-specialist phase, they lose a driller. Also your King's outpost gets +20 shields. In what situation would you use this? I guess if you're going full aggro and if you're huge, it would be good, but you're likely already winning at that point.

Go RV! posted:Let's talk about the King for a second. here's the thing... when you are "winning" you also have a huge target on your back. The King is good for those times that 3 guys are ganging up on you and you absolutely, without a doubt, must destroy 3x as many drillers as you have. He wont do it himself, but with the right combo of specialists you can overcome crazy odds like that.

OK, i caved in and bought the game so i can play muiltiple games at once, i have a couple of questions; If i set my clock forward 3.9 hours at the game start then set up my opening moves it shows just a dotted line on the map can other players see this (provided they are withing sonar range)? Question 2 how do i complete Winning 2 in the Tactical Puzzles.

But lets say you will send them 10min after start they won't see that. But doing that you might not reach a certain place in time. Winning 2 sucks I still haven't figured that one out.

Feenix posted:I still don't really "get" the first loving thing about this game. Think of it this way: The part of the game involving submarines and mines is just the playmat. The sandbox in which the actual game happens. The actual game is the interactions between your opponents and you. Talk to everyone. For example, this happened today in a game I'm playing with friends.: Right now, in a game I'm playing with friends, a player (Blue) I had previously not had contact with sent a sizable fleet of subs at a generator I owned that was at the edge of my, his and another player (Green)'s territories. I argued with him for a bit, got nowhere, and I locked in a defense force. However, a fourth player (Teal) that I had been at odds with all game saw my defense force leave, sent a force to take out a nearby factory I owned. I decided to cede the generator, to keep the factory, and sent all my drillers from the generator to the factory, which would save it. My defense force was still en route, though, so I talked to Green. Blue had been fighting with him, and Green was on the back foot,. I was already on good terms with Green through talking, so I was able to nudge him into send a small group of drillers to take the base after my locked-in force weakened it. His opinion of me went up, making our border safer, and he became a stronger a buffer zone between Blue and I, and I could shift my remaining drillers around to take another generator from Teal in a safer position. I was attacked twice and negotiated myself a better position out of it, both socially and physically. If doing stuff like that doesn't sound neat, this probably isn't your game.
