IIRC it was a high school basement. So yes.

Pity we didn't have that location for the summer tournament, would've helped in the 40 degree heat.

tbh I'd be perfectly fine with us getting only zero-vis smoke. I just want another loving source of the cunting stuff.

RE: Tohaa, it's starting to level out a bit but Tohaa are very strong in that they're optimised for N3 at the get-go while other factions have blatantly poor stuff in them.

The Deva Hacker and the Naga hacker are both 31 pts, but the Deva has NWI + Nanopulser, whereas the Naga has CH:Camo and Dogged. With that few orders, dogged isn't going to help you.

More newbie questions.

Availability is a limit on individual models from a listing, right? Is there a point to taking weak low AVA units like USA grunts, or are they just cheap ways to buy Orders?

Please tell me how I'm going to screw up AROs.

There's definitely use in bringing cheap units as cheerleaders (and cheap backup specialists, and coverage against airborne deployment/impersonation). Let me quote this section from my strategy post:

Corbeau posted:

- Cheerleaders

The nature of Infinity means that even cheerleaders can be effective offensive pieces, but that usually isn't their main role. Cheerleaders primarily exist to provide regular orders and basic ARO defence against airborne deployment at minimum cost. These are typically a faction's line infantry, the most inexpensive bare-bones units that you can buy. Quantity is more important than quality for this role, but the occasional factional perk can be welcome (like BS12 on PanO Fusiliers, the Morat skill on Morat Vanguard Infantry, or WIP14 and underslung light shotguns on Haqq Ghulams). Cheerleaders usually need to be deployed defensively, with limited lines of fire, since they typically lack powerful long-range AROs and have no special survival abilities. Anything can kill anything else in Infinity, and often will, but it's usually more efficient to channel cheerleaders' orders into units specialized for whatever particular job is required.

Grunts are particularly good at being defensive pieces in cover, thanks to their high (for basic infantry) ARM. They'll still die if exposed to enemy fire, but if they're in cover then they have decent odds to soak an extra order before they're dead. The flamethrower Grunt is also excellent for corner defense.

One of the things that got me in my intro game (pro tier right here :v:) is that there's almost no way of shooting people without them potentially getting shots back. If they can see you (and vision's both-ways, fair's-fair style), then they can fire back. There is basically no such thing as a riskless attack.

Stack modifiers against them - having a camo shooter in cover is -9 to ARO right there. Have snipers pick out riflemen and shotgunners. Limit simultaneous AROs by blocking part of the field of view with smoke (and then shoot through the smoke with MSV2 units or Intuitive DTW). Place mines from around the corner so they can't ARO without the mine going off. Shoot them in the back. Throw grenades over the wall/from behind a corner as speculative fire. If they do get cautious, suicide cheap 5pt chain rifle dudes to shoot the whole bunch. Total reaction bot stopping you? Smoke and intuitive or snipe it with a TO dude (you want -12 to BS, murderbots can still crit you on 2s) TO is too hard? They don't have MSV, throw smoke and shoot through. Smokers creeping near? MSV2 is your friend.

grassy gnoll posted:

Please tell me how I'm going to screw up AROs.
Your opponent will do the above, be as much an rear end in a top hat to him as rules and good sportsmanship allow. Make him suffer multiple AROs at once so he has to divide the burst, have snipers where they will have range advantage, match MSV to camo, learn your units' vulnerabilities and avoid them.

grassy gnoll posted:

If they're low AVA it means you're playing a generic list, so play to their strengths - take them as HFT infiltration variants. For plain orders you want chain Volunteers for 6pts each.

Buy a Garuda, assemble it, if someone tells you to play Aleph at 125pts shove it up their nose sideways.

Or proxy it as a Deva+Devabot, if they take issue with proxying use the above solution.

If their stat is 12 or less, and you can stack -12 on them they don't get to shoot back. Intruders in smoke erase TR bits this way.

There is also a loophole in the ZoC rules to steal their ARO and get zero risk shooting attacks and engagements. Although tbh, you should just scoop against anyone abusing ZoC rules. Edit: Seriously, people using camo markers and coordinated orders to have a non-camo troop walk in the targets ZoC to get a normal roll with low B weapons with no shots back are subhuman.

But in general that true there is always risk.

Unfortunately it's escalation, so we're going from low-points "just the starter box" to full armies (300pts). Long term I'm thinking maybe full-robo or full-gynoids (Maurt+Tact/Garudas or devas, asuras, nagas, etc), but yeah, for now, tiny points values. On the plus side most people playing have never played before, so.

I don't know... If you move within 8" of a unit (their ZOC) you usually trigger an ARO. Stealth and camo get around this. Since it triggers an ARO you MUST spend that ARO.

No idea how you can get a free attack in though? If you move in from behind and trigger a ZOC ARO the opponent can do change facing at PH - 3 which counts as a dodge if you attack.
