Movie in Canada works out to like $40 for two people, and that's if we share a pop corn. I can see $100 for four people.

It's like $12-$15 a ticket these days.

What is it that prevents people from accessing the mainstream banking system? Do banks turn you down for savings accounts based on bad credit or something? How is a debit card out of reach for so many people?

My point wasn't so much about the cost but more about the types of medications. I don't have children but how common is it for them to need hundreds of dollars worth a month? One hears about over-prescribing ADHD drugs and such so I wondered if that had anything to do with it.

Going to the movies without a popcorn and soda sucks. That's some oliver twist poo poo. Seriously, if you can't afford popcorn and soda at a movie, don't go. Use your ticket money on a bag of chips and a soda at a bodega, then throw the remaining ticket money in a crowd of bums and enjoy the show.

A lot of things.

  • There is an analog to credit reporting, specifically for checking accounts. If you have previously bounced checks or kept low balances, you may find your application declined.

  • There are often very substantial minimum balance requirements. (Unless you want to pay a monthly fee)

  • In lieu of a minimum balance requirement, you can configure a direct deposit. (Often this has a monthly minimum attached to it also. Again, unless you want to pay a monthly fee.)

  • Retail branches for banks don't tend to be found in "bad" neighborhoods, but check cashing and prepaid cards are everywhere.

Movies are PRICY nowadays. It costs more to see an opera livecast at Cineplex than it does to buy an under-30 ticket to the actual opera.

For the price of a movie and snacks, you can drink scotch at the opera. Opera is pretty good value.

When people say they spend a lot of money on medication for children, is that normal in the US, and what's it for? I hear it a lot. As a child in the UK I was never on anything regular and even if I were it wouldn't have cost anything.

Are you referring to cost or to number of medications? If it's cost or availability, most kids are covered by some kind of insurance (their parents' private insurance or state-run plans for low income kids) and many of the medications have generics so cost is usually minimal.

As for the number of medications. Oh yeah. We like our kids medicated.

I see tickets at an amc theater in LA this Saturday at 11am and 205pm for 12.49 and 13.49 respectively. So ~50 bucks plus tax for a family of 4. If you are struggling financially you can definitely make it work for a lot less than 100-150 dollars...

lol just lol if you aren't sneaking your entire family into the theater.

I miss going to movies in the Dominican Republic. $2.50 and no rules about food or alcohol. I watched Frozen while drinking a bottle of rum and eating a sandwich... now that's living!

Dominican women all have curly hair but literally spend around 10% of their household income at the salon getting their hair straightened every week because the term for curly hair is literally "bad hair" and straight hair is known as "good hair". That's a national BWM and bad with racial self identity.

At my local cinema you can buy microbrews and one of the "popcorn and something to drink" menus is popcorn and a beer, living in Denmark might be bwm, but it's good with beer.

And drinking at the zoo is essentially a once or twice a year thing for biology students here. Their admission is free and we have a lot of different beer either named after animals or with animal pictures on the label, so you go see the giraffe and drink a giraffe beer etc. To be fair, the zoo has asked the students to stop or at least take it easy.

Chexsystems is like a credit reporting agency for bank accounts.

My BWM story, in 1999 I moved to LA. I used my cleveland debit card for gas, threw it in a sock drawer and Opened a new account in LA.

6 months later I moved back to Cleveland, closed the LA account. Found out I had overdrawn my cleveland account (this was before every bank had online access). They had sent letters to my parents house, and then put me in chexsystems.

I paid off the 45 bucks, but was locked out of checking accounts for 7 years until it fell off. I don't know if it's still as severe, but it was really difficult for me.

Back when I was a poor I would get payday loans, and holy poo poo the fees just lock you in a cycle until you find a way out of paying them. Even worse my bank (US Bank) had cash advances that were a HIGHER fee than the payday loan places!

I'm lucky to have made strides in income, but for the vast majority of people, they are trapped in an awful cycle of predatory lending. There are at least 5 payday loan places within 2 miles of my house, they wouldn't be there if they weren't profitable. It reflects how many people are getting killed by those services.

And one more little thing, I opened an account with a local credit union for loan services, they hard-pulled my transunion AND chexsystems for a debit card I didn't want. I was pretty pissed at that.

I suspect that part of the reason that payday loans charge usurious rates is that they have an equally outrageous expenses (collections, write offs for non payment/bk). Not to suggest that the owners of such outfits aren't living large, but otherwise there would be a line of hedge funds a mile long operating payday loan shops and driving down the rates.

At the population level, i can only imagine the primary reason banks don't want to do business with such a big segment of the country is that they're not profitable customers.

It could be hedge funds staffed entirely by Hitler clones and the rates would still drop if there was competition for the customers and the business was profitable at the lower rate.

There's a ton of hedge/private equity in payday loan already. It turns out that subprime lending, like most markets, is not a perfectly competitive Econ 101 spherical-economy-in-a-vacuum fantasy.
