But actual Irish people very clearly are upset. And you may consider it weird or silly for actual Irish people to be upset, which is fine, but it's still clearly A Thing Which Has Happened, which is why I (and most everyone else in this thread except you and Atom) are incredulous that Reebok were so stupid as to create a shirt which pisses off the majority of their target market for said shirt. Most multi-billion dollar companies have localization teams in order to prevent exactly this kind of thing from happening. Like, the whole concept of "fan death" is manifestly ridiculous but that doesn't change the fact that it would be very stupid to make a Korean Zombie t-shirt with a giant fan on it. And if Reebok did that I wouldn't be outraged, but I would be incredulous that they could be so goddamn dumb. Which is exactly the reactions going on in the thread currently. I'm not sure why this is difficult for you to understand.

fatherdog posted:Because it's something Irish people, the ostensible main market for said shirt, get upset about so you'd think somebody would have at some point vetted this I'm Irish and its not super offensive. Certainly nowhere near the level of putting a Germany swastika ufc t-shirt together. It would be pretty retarded if it was a rugby thing because the "national" team includes both north and south but for soccer that shirt is just the way it is. In the general population you wouldn't have a lot of people who are aware or remotely give poo poo about mma and far fewer would care about the actual country being depicted as it is. The people who would latch on to it as something to be upset about if they even are aware of it would be using it as a prop in a very long running and super tedious drama that should have ended 20 odd years ago. I don't visit a lot of republican websites so I'm not 100% on that. That said I don't know John Kavanagh and I've never been to one of his gyms but if I were to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he isn't a total troglodyte I'd guess there's a bunch of northern Irish trainers or fighters in his gym who feel a bit excluded. And Kavanagh and his gyms are pretty much be mma in Ireland so if that's the case, fair enough. I'd have figured more of them would have gone over to train in England though. I'm only talking about what seems to be on the t-shirt though. I saw some tagline about "show your territorial allegiance" which isn't on the shirt but that's borderline at worst. This post to say its just a storm in a teacup ended up being longer than I figured.

The shirt was a response to Poirier turning down the fight against Parke, who is the only Northern Irish fighter on the roster. It was a jab specifically at Poirier - it is his fault that Northern Ireland doesn't get to come play.

Why is Reebok so obsessed with the nationalist approach to the fight gear anyways? It's not like this is the loving Olympics where countries go head to head. If they really were lazy, they could have gotten the UFC roster and then gone down going, "Red, blue, red, blue..."

It was the most read article on the guardian when it was posted here yesterday. It's almost goofy how bungled the UFC Reebok deal has been so far and we're only one year into a six year deal.

It's no big deal for sure it's just a very bizarre misunderstanding of the country. It's worth keeping in mind any nordies born after the Good Friday Agreement are entitled to an Irish passport and everything that comes with that and it's probably a bit poo poo to be from Antrim but still identify as Irish and see the map like that. I'm guessing you're from the republic too? If you go up to Belfast there are still tensions and strong ties to the past. There are IRA gun murals all over the place still beside barbed wire fenced playgrounds. I was there for a fencing training camp last summer and out bus took us past streets lines with union jacks and the next stop had a large sign with a burning Union Jack on it. There are still clubs and organisations all over the place advertising them as "loyalist only". There were parts of the city Nordies warned us not to go into because people would hear our accents and start asking where we were from. The year before that we were up for a competition during an Orange Order March and someone saw a pal of mine wearing an irish footie jersey and asked us if we were from the South. When we said yes he told us he was an undercover copper and escorted us back to the train station to be safe. We had riots in just 2006 when the Orange Order tried to march through Dublin City. Of course things are not remotely as bad as they were years ago, nowhere close. Still, it's silly to say that there is no tension or any political heat there. Of course a UFC tshirt isn't going to cause much commotion overall but it is still loving dumb as hell and a really bizarre place to be reminded of an incredibly painful and destructive time in our history. It is easy to say it is nbd just because it's not an issue for you.

Yeah I was only talking about the reaction here in the free state. I can imagine people in the North losing their poo poo but if its not this its just going to be something else for them. I've only been North a few times but not in the last ten years.
