one last annoying thing about the freeway. Here in Michigan, it's random seemingly how many lanes you'll get. Like near me is a stretch where the normally two lane interstate expands to three for whatever reason (mostly because after the 8 or 10 miles a left-hand exit pops up) Anyways, nearly every friggin time that I drive those stretches do I see semis who seem to think that means that since it's no longer just the slow lane and the passing lane, that they should move over and continue at their pace of 15-20mph slower than the speed limit in the center lane too. This gets hilariously frustrating when they do it to a point where the left lane ends and suddenly they're the rear end in a top hat in the passing lane going super slow and can't get back to the slow lane because they clearly thought any of that through.

It's really weird, but in a lot of cases it's because there hasn't been much thought given to traffic at all. The whole of US-23 could be three lanes due to the congestion all the way through Washtenaw County. For some reason, I-94 shrinks to two lanes going through Ann Arbor and the city won't entertain putting in a third lane because it'll cost a lot of money to deal with the ten or so overpasses that'll need to be upgraded as well. Of course, Ann Arbor attempts to deal with it by blaming it on drivers going too fast, not realizing that the biggest congested area is right near that two-lane bottleneck that happens to cross by the University of Michigan campus. Oh well, stupid highway derail over. Can we get some more of those insane PSAs? Except the Canadian ones. Those are really freaking scarring. Turkey can't take out all the humans, but it can start with the young ones.

For some mild automotive schadenfreude that doesn't involve speed: I was deployed for a while to Manas, Kyrgyzstan a couple years ago. The base itself consisted mostly of a living area that was about four blocks in size with a 20mph speed limit. I'm driving a van to go drop some folks off and pass right by the main recreation building; sort of an indoor-outdoor sports bar where you could buy your two beers a day and play ping-pong or cards. Ping-pong was fairly popular because there's literally jack poo poo else to do in Manas, Kyrgyzstan when you're passing through. Ping-ong balls, however, were always in short supply because too many people think the objective is to lose or destroy every ball they can get their hands on (for a time, they even made you sign out ping-pong balls and would bill you for each one lost). The road along the bar is only two lanes and a garbage truck was stopped in my lane unloading dumpsters, so I swing around it to pass and creep by going about 10mph with my window down because it's hot as balls in my van. This put my seat about 8-10 feet from the deck where a lively game of ping-pong was going on. As I pass, a woman hits the ping-pong ball off the table and into the road and chases after it, stopping just short of getting Lame as hell but it's not talking about the goddamn fast lane.
