I actually haven't. I spent my time on other things, granted I had the leak, but I didn't care to finish reading an incomplete product.

Then don't read the backer PDF.

I was honestly expecting a lot more out of this book, just in terms of layout and style. The lack of charm-tree illustrations is a first for a storyteller product, isn't it? All the WOD books have those, all the Exalted books have always had them. They're kind of important to being able to visualize and process the hundreds of charms included in this book. And I remember when we first were shown the page layout example and everyone wondered if the art really was just going to be pasted onto the pages without any borders or blending, like screenshots? YEP! it is.

If page count is an issue, they could save a ton of space in the Twenty Pages of backer-names by doing what movie credits do and not using a column approach and doing a straight paragraph listing, especially for the cheap seats. Or just including more columns and cutting the white space on those pages.

Please tell me why they're still doing THIS:

e:If I was the guy who made the PDF with the functional links in three hours that these jokers couldn't be assed to include, I'd probably sneak one dummy link in the mix so that I could see if they just stole my work instead of doing it themselves later.

It's incredible to me that they couldn't even get the five immaculate paragons on the same page next to their icons. There's literally a little sidebar filling out the bottom of the page that could easily just be shifted up by the same amount of space that the five paragraphs could be shifted down.

I'll admit I laughed at that layout gently caress up.

Screwing up the Charm stat-blocks again and again I can actually forgive to when there's hundreds of them, page after page broken up by occasional art. I wonder if the Charms should have been split into 5 subchapters by caste, with different backgrounds so you can spot when section you're in at a glance.

Page 66: What the heck is going on with the Empress's leg? Shoulda gotten a redraw.
Page 110: Uran-Sempai!!! *fanboys*
Page 124: Metal as gently caress. Nice work
Page 140: Our first, uh, black person? Or maybe darker skinned asian? Yeah, Asian.
Page 149: there we go!
Page 158: This is awesome.
Page 186: This was good in preview. Still good.
Page 192-193: This is a good couple of pages. I like the sequence, but shouldn't they be reversed?
Page 198: "This badger lunar is making my faaaaace meeeeelt!"

Page 256: Harmonious Jade got cured of her Vitigilo, she's black again!
Page 263: Straight Wuxia. I ain't mad at that.
Page 268: This is also good. Impressionistic Exalted.

287: I actually like this, but the faces and fingers seem odd, like they were done by someone else.
293: Yes. Good.
301: Oh, she DOES wear underwear. Ok.
305: Huh. I see what you’re going for, but maybe put a sketch filter or something over this?
314: There’s… a lot going on in this one. Even Uran can’t carry the day all the time.
319: Good stuff. Nice Minarets.
327: I still thing Linguistics is super niche, but this art makes it look impressive
335: Eh, so-so. It kinda looks like he’s demolishing the building, not raising it.
343: Doctor man looks pissed. Night caste looks like an amateur cheesecake job.
348: Wins for conveying what is going on. Loses for the that Exalt’s face. But at least we have more skin and hair color variety.

365: I get it. Crowds are hard. This is not the way to do them.

375: I like the lower portion, but what’s with the clumsily scribbled in foreground object in the upper portion?
384: I don’t think that’s how horses or necks or sidesaddle works.
388: I don’t think that’s how ships or perspective works, what in the hell. Also, more bronze-age ships.

428: Buff Aang is in this book?
430: Yeees. I want to be a Tiger Stylist
435: Whoa. He can see the Matrix. As a side effect, his ponytail is 11’ long.
439: This works MUCH better now that it has been colored in.
442: Buff Aang has some anger issues to work out, maybe? Dem veins, tho!
446: This is pretty cheap Kung Fu Hustle fanart, I fear.
454: Hell yes.
457: Hell is going on here? Spectral Handjob attack!
460: Servicable
463: Pretty neat, but that ghost commander looks like a Halloween prop
473: I realize obsidian is hard to draw, but Monarch butterflies?
480: Whoever you hired to draw Fire is good.
482: I can’t believe you left the name as ‘Death Ray’, but this art is good.
488: Did Rob Liefield draw those feet? The rest is good.
493: This art is just… boring? And so-so?
498: This is pretty cool, that face is out of place, though.
500: Ditto. Is that a Poser face for the Snek person?
501: This one is both scary and funny in good ways.
Monster Art: I know some disagree, but I actually like most of the monster art. It’s neither as evocative as 1st edition or as vibrant as, like, D&D 5e, but it works.
542: For a second I thought he was holding two weapons instead of one daiklave
546: Swole Lunar is a pretty good Lunar
548: A lot of boring foreground space, but serviceable.
551: This dude would be insufferable to adventure with. I guess if that’s what you’re going for.
553: Dude on the left is laughable. Girl on the right is pretty awesome
565: Ape on the top right is like “OH NO YOU DI’IN’T”
567: No tusks?
573: Those legs look super fragile, and the claws look a bit silly
577: Kejak can see the fates of Fantasy Europe!
579: Mack Daddy. Good job.
Weapons and Artifacts: BOOORING
Boomerang: Come on, no decoration at all?
Composite Bows: You couldn’t copy, like, a Hungarian bow or something? Or Mongol?
Firewand: That is a Winchester. There aren’t Lever-Action firewands.
Hauberk: Come on, man, this ain’t D&D. Bronze-Age it up!
Articulated Plate: See above. I hate that this is even a Thing in Exalted.
Artifacts: BOOORING
Reaver Daiklave: Nice of someone to paint up the Buster Sword
Infinite Chakram: Stolen from Soul Calibur 5
Skycutter: Actually ok.
Powerbows and Artifact Wands: Servicable but BORING. More variety! More style!
602: Amateur work on the dude the scene is focused on.
606: Can’t get over those terrible poser faces.
608-609: More Impressionism! This is actually kinda nice even though it is wildly less detailed
Evocation Art: MORE BORING EQUIPMENT
631: Perhaps the best art in the entire Solar book, and she’s not a Solar. LOL.

Oh, now the game's out I'm gonna quote myself from before for the benefit of any new players/storyellers:

Ferrinus posted:

So my group's putting an Exalted group together, and these are the house rules we're using specifically to eliminate the egregious and insanely stupid problems with rules-as-written chargen. I figured they might be of use to other people.

MERITS: At chargen, you get 10 dots to spend exclusively on story merits like Followers, Backing, etc. You can't buy story merits with BP.

Purchased and Innate merits can only be attained by spending BP, either in chargen or later in play.

BONUS POINT COSTS: Use the table from the book, but with these changes:

-The first three dots of any Ability cost 1bp apiece, whether it's caste, favored, or otherwise.
-Any Essence 1 Charm or Terrestrial Circle spell costs 4bp, whether it's caste, favored, or otherwise.

CHARACTER ADVANCEMENT: There's no such thing as experience points - you advance your character with bonus points. Generally, 1bp = 2xp if you need to convert on the fly for the purpose of some later rule, so the standard per-session BP reward might be 2, 3, 2, 3... (or just 3 if you're feeling generous).

It's possible we missed a spot, but I think this ensures that traits cost the same whenever you buy them and therefore that there's no pressure to buy certain things late or early in order to conserve build points.

It changes the balance on a few things slightly - for instance, with bonus points, bringing a new martial art to 5 dots so that you can buy all its charms only costs the equivalent of 1.2 charms rather than costing the equivalent of 2.25 charms - but, honestly, who cares? Does anyone believe that the prior ratio was actually precisely calibrated? Certainly not me!

...

In our game, most Purchased and Innate merits, particularly those that basically duplicate D&D feats and just constitute bonuses to specific uses of existing traits (Quickdraw, Strong Back, Toxin Resistance, all of that) don't exist at all and can't be purchased. The "Martial Artist" merit also isn't real - If you want to learn a martial art, you just sink your dots/BP into ability dots for it, same with any other Ability. We made this change for reasons of personal taste, though, so if you're purely concerned with BP parity there's no special reason to follow in our footsteps.

We also aren't letting anyone buy artifact/manse/demesne with their starting story merit dots and deleted the Supernal Ability, but that's similarly irrelevant to purchase timing concerns.

I think the only thing close to a release schedule they made was an intention to have three 'sub' books (things like arms of the chosen and the realm book) and one to two splats a year. And that Deebs and Exigents would be the first two splats done after Solars.

I don't think that really works. If it's a mortal weapon it's probably completely indistinguishable from unarmed, so it's just for flavor. If it's an artifact, you're skirting the rules that prevent unarmed styles from using artifact weapons. The former is probably fine but fairly pointless, whereas the latter is cheating.
